Happy Holidays! Here's a "Christmas" tune about a young man whose father is a member of the provisional IRA. The Provos were active after 1969, following the violent suppression of the nonviolent civil rights campaign in Northern Ireland to bring about an end to the discrimination perpetrated by the Ulster Loyalists and the RUC against ethnic Irish Catholics. The Provos responded to this violence with their own armed resistance, culminating in the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, followed by the final disarming of their paramilitary in 2005.

Political violence is always a sad thing to see. But people seem to always ignore the political violence perpetrated by the state. Just because the state has a monopoly on violence designated by law, doesn't mean that it's always justified and that all other actors are unjustified in their use of violence.

@@roqeyt3566 that's true. But not every reason is a good reason... As an example: you shouldn't punch someone in the face because he is "different" or he told you to do something little (like a step aside)and you didn't. And this is where the state comes in and tries to regulate the measures of violence. Just wanted to add that to the discussion

@@Felix-ym6cc Of course. Not every act of violence is justified, by far not. That's what I wanted to get at. We always need to ask ourselves, what the reason for this violence is and if given the reason, the extent of violence is acceptable. It's also very problematic to give the state a monopoly on violence without questioning. Just look at incidents of racist police violence in the US. Just because some violence is approved by the state doesn't mean it's justified.

Fertilizer is a major ingredient in ANFO, which is an explosive.

I’ve always wondered what Irish natives thought of Americans who supported the IRA or Irish independence/unification. I know that Americans with Irish heritage sent money and support but I just wondered did the Irish people or specifically the ira actually cared about or didn’t care about Americans and others that gave them fundings or weapons.

American support for the IRA came from the IRB having immigrated to the US in the 1800s thus the predecessor of the IRA, being the IRB was based in the US, and helped to create, arm, and fund the IRA so both countries had a tight relationship, to say the least.

@@persianprince6213 it just seems to me that today they don’t have that same mentality of brothers and sisters across the sea. I’ve seen a hefty amount of Irish people not liking Americans with Irish decent. Personally i think it’s more about politics and stereotypes and actually wondering if those Americans are actually Irish. Yet I’ve seen plenty of Irish Americans who due live a cultural Irish life who still keep in touch in Irish culture, history, politics and even sports.

@@tdog4423 Definitly there is a divide now days, its really about the stereotyping, and the difference in culture which inevitably occurs once people immigrate from their home country. So because the customs, traditions, and cultural mentalities are fading away, the Irish Americans are seeming less "Irish"

There’s a vast divide between the two cultures in a large part (at least there became one after the mass emigration to America) because the Irish people began to compensate for their missing culture by modifying certain traditions and creating their own. Today the rich culture is still there, but some Irish people seem to believe that we in America who are descended all only participate in the diluted, and, to some, offensive, versions of their cultural traditions in our own right. Some people believe this means we don’t wish to honor or learn the origins. Also Irish culture is misrepresented and diluted in the media a lot, partly due to stereotypes and other misconceptions, and some people come to believe this is all that there is to Irish culture. Maybe even some Americans with this descent follow the stereotypes and diluted traditions because they believe that this IS what being Irish is. We do not tend to teach the rich history and culture here and that may lead some people-even when visiting Ireland-to partake in these customs that have come to cause divide, simply because they want to fit in and “be Irish”… there are so many paradigms to take here but this is merely one of them.
