The Orange and the Green - Anthony Murphy (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
MY LINKS: linktr.ee/Seth...
"The Orange and the Green" is a jocular Irish folk song about a man whose father was a Protestant ("Orange") and mother a Catholic ("Green"). It describes the man's struggle to reconcile both sides of his family in the face of their seemingly insurmountable differences, while also noting the humorous but unfortunate fact that prior to his birth, they seemed to have got on just fine.
This song was written by Anthony Murphy of Liverpool, and is sung to the same tune as "The Wearing of the Green", which is also used in "The Rising of the Moon", another Irish ballad. Because of its proximity to other rebel tunes like "Rising of the Moon" and the singer's apparent proclivity toward his mother rather than his father (he proudly strolled to mass and sang rebel songs of his own accord), I like to consider this a rebel song as well. It has been recorded by bands such as The Irish Rovers, The Wolfe Tones, and Paddy Reilly among others.
Lyrics:
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
Oh my father was an Ulsterman, proud Protestant was he
My mother was a Catholic girl, from County Cork was she
They were married in two churches, lived happily enough
Until the day that I was born and things got rather tough
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
Baptised by father Reilly, I was rushed away by car
To be made a little orangeman, my father's shining star
I was christened David Anthony, but still in spite of that
To my father I was William while my mother called me Pat
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
With mother every Sunday to mass I'd proudly stroll
Then after that the orange lads would try to save my soul
For both sides tried to claim me, but I was smart because
I played the flute or played the harp, depending where I was
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
Now when I'd sing them rebel songs much to me mother's joy
My father would jump up and say 'look here me William boy'
That's quite enough of that lot, he'd then toss me a coin
And have me sing the Orange Flute or the Heroes of the Boyne
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
One day my ma's relations came round to visit me
Just as my father's kinfolk were all sittin' down to tea
We tried to smooth things over, but they began to fight
And me being strictly neutral, I bashed everyone in sight
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
Now my parents never could agree about my type of school
My learning was all done at home, that's why I'm such a fool
They both passed on, god rest them, but left me caught between
That awful color problem of the orange and the green
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green
Oh it is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen
My father he was orange and my mother she was green

Lol, I'm also of the orange and the green, but my dad is the Catholic, and my mum, the Protestant 😆 the different halves didn't have many issues with each other however. (My parents did date secretly for 6 years in Derry though 😅)

Weirdly enough, I am not kidding apparently this song reflects my own life. What major example my mother is Catholic, and my father is Protestant lutheran. My mother was born in Texas, which is part of the South. My father was born in Iowa, which is part of the north. I've had both sides of my family fighting in the civil war. And as well my mother has majority of Celtic ancestry (Welsh, Irish Scottish), and my father has a lot of German and Scandinavian ancestry. As well my first name is of Irish origin being Connor, while my middle name is somewhat more of a German or Protestant type of name known as William. Then there is actually when it comes to music, my mother she is a fan of Celtic and country, and my father is a fan of German and rock and roll. And the really weird thing both sides of my family I can never exactly agree with, as I like to stay fully neutral between the two 😂😂😂😂

Awesome that you’ve eight connections to the song-I love those! Bet your family reunions were quite interesting… I was nearly caught in this place, and I guess when the family got together it can be a bit problematic(: we come on mom’s side from McCracken (related to Henry Joy), a heavily Protestant line, and my dad was raised Catholic and tho he is now a Protestant, his family is devout Catholic while mom’s is Protestant. The only time we really saw a divide was at my Grandma’s funeral, when Catholic services were provided. The Protestant side didn’t have a clue as to the rosary, and in the service, we made the mistake of trying to end the Lord’s Prayer (so were the only speaking when the Catholic side knew the church had changed it). Really funny in hindsight. I don’t know if you have a preferred side, but I will say that both sides have absolutely beautiful traditions, especially the rite of the tapestry (C) and the Easter cross processional and candlelight Christmas Eve (P).

Me too. Except mine is the opposite. By dad was Catholic and my mom protestant. I am to Catholic for my mom's side but to Protestant for my dad's. I do play the flute or the harp depending where I am.

@@menyou1443 My sister-in-law had her baby baptized at 3 months in a Roman Catholic church. The priest made a plea for the family to come to further masses and celebrate the baby's first communion. My family has always been Protestant for generations: my mother Lutheran and my father Anglican, nobody on our side of the family has a clue about Roman Catholicism despite our family name being French-Canadian--Goneau which the baby carried, of course, since it is my brother's surname. Suddenly, the priest realized that we weren't Roman Catholic and just shut up about trying to recruit us to Roman Catholicism. I just posted "The Irish Rovers'" versions of the song on a site where people have been all in a twitter about a university President claiming she had Micmaw heritage and getting an award as if she was a status Indigenous person. My position is that she made an honest mistake or even is of Micmaw (Micmac) heritage. We have other failings in university education to perseverate about IMHO. I can't believe the story made the Guardian and CNN.

Religion has nothing to do with what’s happened in Ireland, if you were from here you would know that… so unless your family our secturan then what’s the problem? Here the problem is the British put British planters here on Irish land and forced the Irish to work there lands, so us Irish were being treated like second class in our own country by British invaders… the only thing about religion is the English / British planters happen to be Protestants and the Irish happen to be catholic mostly… ask any side from Ireland Religion has NOTHING to do with what has happened in Ireland

I have said this on a video before, but the song represents the Irish flag, the Green = Irish catholics and the Orange ulster Protestants and the two religious denominations always were at odd but the son in this case is the white of the flag meaning peace and he always tries to keep the family the parents together but fails at times, and more closely he is a neutral zone being between the two and wanting peace.
