This was super awesome! I’ve tried so many different iterations of my palettes. Something I didn’t hear you talk about was single vs multiple pigments being part of your consideration as well as granulating vs non granulating colors. It would be cool to also hear about what you use this palette to paint and if your subjects encourage you to make changes as your interest in what to paint changes .. super helpful!

I love seeing how we all go on different palette journeys. I think we all have to be a little kinder to our past selves though. When I decided to make the jump from craft paint to professional quality watercolour, it was a bit daunting. I lived in a very remote area with no local professional art supplies, so my shopping was all done online (I'm so thankful I found out about Jackson's). I started with an 18 set of Jackson's home brand full pan paints. This was so exciting and fun. I learned so much and started to actively seek more knowledge about colour theory as a result. I doubt I would have derived the same enjoyment and wonder if I'd started with a small set of 6 split primary colours. As I've developed as an artist it is possible to narrow down the colours I enjoy using to quite a small collection, but I love having a larger collection to fall back on when I want to try something different or explore new themes. My palettes are still mostly sorted by brand. Thank-you Oto for sharing this journey with us.

My color journey is best seen on the black color. At first I bought lamp black. Then I learned about mixing darks with burnt siena and ultramarine and other combinations. And I gifted the lamp black. The next step was my interest in granulation and I discovered mars black. After this I wanted to combine with pensils, so I came to neutral tint. And the last step so far is the rediscovery of lamp black as a fur color, because it bleads nicely. My conclusion to this is: every color has its own purpose. You need to "learn your colors" and be familiar with them, so you can use them in their specific ways. By the way: I almost skipped out eveery premixed green. Especially Hookers does not work for me. I once bought a tube of Schmincke and it was very opac and I hated it. Sap green did not make it into my palette, nor does permanent green. Instead I mix my grewns intuitively with the colors on my tray.

I just enjoy the journey of trying to figure it out. I started with small travel tins and moved on to ceramic. At the moment, I have two ceramic. One is earth for landscapes (raw umber, burnt umber, DS Moonglow, etc.). The other is a color wheel. It’s just fun.

I’m all over the place. No art background. Learning through KZfaq, books and online courses. I have ordered the DS 6-pack mixing set so I can have the beginnings of a more traditional palette. However I am unlkk in Ely to ever develop into a “ realistic” artist so at the moment I’m like a magpie, buying what speaks to me. Now I need to arrange these into workable palettes

very interesting history of your thoughts on color. Currently i have a floral palette-mostly Billy Showell's selection plus a few more, Qor's small travel pan palette, a teaching palette with the more traditional split primary colors, and a 30 color "perfect palette" -every color is single pigment, transparent, lightfast and non-toxic.

If I'm not mistaken, Quiller's paint are made by Blockx. It's nice to see how palettes evolve. Mine don't "evolve"; they "expand"... 🥴

So happy you are up to making videos again! 🥰 I have learned so much about watercolor and watercolor pigments from your videos over the years! I have always loved your GORGEOUS 🤩 choices of pigments and have spent countless hours deliberating on my own palette based on your super informative analyses, and people seem to appreciate how bright my paintings are as a result! Also, reviewing your past palettes in this video brings back happy memories of learning about wc and then teaching it to my sweet mom-it gave her something creative and fun to do! Thank you so much! 😍

Super interesting. I'm still on my journey and feeling frustrated. I'm not so organized as to have made detailed charts. That would have been wise because I have too many reds and blues. I'm glad to have found your channel to really break down color theory. I learn something new from every video and have gone back through your play lists. Thank you.

Great video. I am also struggling a lot with colors 😅 I recently added shadow violet of DS and I use it al lot as a shadow color for skin tones and trees. I like it a lot. Naples yellow I added also and I also use it for skin tone.

I received Winsor Newton Professional 24 pan set ... from there added quinacridone magentas... Bordeaux, Aqua Green... Turquoise colors... Phthalo Green & Blue. I'm still a beginner... didn't have a clue... but I finally learned that I just love the exact color, without having to mix it - then trying to remember what colors were used. Also... on the back I plan to keep record of paper & colors used! Thank 😊 you for sharing your journey with us!!! I agree I sometimes feel overwhelmed & may start choosing my color list of 4 or so first!!! God bless you! From a California Gramma ❤️

Quite Interesting. I would like to know what you would recommend 3 tube water colors true primary. My desire is to have 5 tubes and that is my base. I'm looking for middle of the road as far as price, obviously I don't want cheap paint and on a fixed income won't spend a fortune. My next requirement would be that if I wanted to put some in pans they would dry and be usable so that I can make a set for my daughter. If you have the time maybe you could help? Thank you for sharing. You are appreciated.

Hi Oto, could you comment on PR 209 and PR 207 from DS, Holbein, Mijello and Shin Han and other brands you may have? In particular, I am curious if Quin Coral from DS is similar to Quin Scarlet from Holbein and the PR 207 and PR 209 from Mijello and Shin Han? Thanks 😊

Wow, that guy's palette sure has a great many opaque colors for a modem day watercolorist. I'm sure whoever he is he isn't a Sandby or a singer Sargeant.
Please be kind🙏
