Get 15% off your Carly purchase with code "LucyonCars" until Dec 15th at: bit.ly/LucyonCars_Carly
Carly's scanner and free version of the app with standard OBD features are compatible with cars that have an OBD2 port. To see if Carly's advanced features - like coding or manufacturer-level diagnostics - should work with your car, make sure to check out their website. To access these additional features, you'll need to get their yearly license.
I wanted to finally film an honest ownership review of my L322 Range Rover. The TDV8 is a beautiful car and has so many positives for me. It does however have it's downfalls! I thought I'd run through all of these points in one video as well as giving you a breakdown of all costs and bills so far. Enjoy!

Opposite cars: my 2012 L322 and my 2017 Chevy Bolt EV (same as Opel Ampera E). We use the Bolt for most of our daily driving, but have the L322 for when we need it - cross country drives, off road adventures, tow a trailer when needed, or when the weather gets really bad. I'm not quite sure what a tailgate is... but I seem to use our "boot flap" in similar ways to you. 😉 The L322 has more running costs than some other vehicles, but other vehicles simply underperform in comparison. Also the initial cost of an L322 is quite low for how much vehicle you get. I'm surprised how noisy you find the cabin. Mine is very quiet, nearly as quiet as my EV. Perhals it's a combo of your diesel and tires?

Opposite cars - my 2011 L322 5.0 S/C and my 2015 Abarth 595 Competizione 180. Getting into the Abarth after the RR makes it feel like one of those red and yellow little tikes cars! My l322 is virtually silent (although i guess the petrol engine will be a bit smoother) so your road noise may be down to the tyres. Try some Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Seasons with PNCS (foam inserts) in the 255/55 profile and you won't be disappointed.

Other bonuses of the high driving position that I've found is that you don't get glare from people's headlights as much. Also you end up being above people's spray on the motorway when it's wet. And you can see much further ahead, great for seeing potential dangerous situations earlier than a driver of a much lower car

Cool video. Having potentially dody older cars is a bit of an art form. You need to have some skills and tools to avoid dealership weirdness. Eg; I was quoted $400 to fix the window switch in my car, but bought it used off ebay for $35 and installed it myself in 10 minutes. Another example was the seat height adjuster broke, so the dealer quoted $1,000 for the frame only. Bought a used seat for $75. It's not that Dealers are evil, it's just that they view repairs as either a) done properly, or b) not done properly. Properly costs money, and improper is unacceptable to them.

Nearly went for the L322, but after driving the Cayenne I went for that,- coming from a discovery I fancied a break away from LR anxiety!!!… so my 2 poles apart cars are Cayenne turbo (zero miles to the gallon) and Niro electric (zero gallons to many miles)…. I agree it’s good to have 2 cars at opposite ends of the spectrum! Keep the updates coming. 😊

Keith, the plastic pipes were rectified after 2006.. they are all metal from 07 facelift onwards. David… yes! A great young and Yang indeed. I can get my fix of V8 roar, then go back to sensible zero emission driving. The Niro is an incredible thing really, 300 miles easily achievable in summer - I would never get that range from the V8’s 100 litre tank! 😬🙂
@jasonlewry3307
@jasonlewry3307 Жыл бұрын
Ying! Sorry … need my glasses on when typing now! The Niro is also a bit of a surprise… it’s the wife’s daily really and we swapped an ipace for it…. I have no idea what the 0-60 is in the niro but it isn’t advertised at under 6 seconds! It’s way faster than I was expecting (in sport mode) I’ve timed it at 5.9….. quite amusing from a car that looks so plain…. The Cayenne is around 4.5, goes round corners on rails (PDCC) and drinks like Ollie Read.

@@jasonlewry3307 nice, makes me glad to know there are other like minded chaps out there like me. Lol. In Australia people love these vehicles, so the Range Rover / Land Rover owner are either rich so they buy a vehicle new and trade it when it is out of warranty ie three years, or join a Range Rover Club and share/find ways to fix RR problems, plus there are good Range Rover dedicated after market work shops who charge reasonable prices and know RR problems.

Informative video as ever guys. Thank you. I'm aghast you spent £11,000 in your first 6 months. For instance, £550 for a new battery is, IMHO, somewhat of a rip off. Genuine LR I presume; you can get them online for max £200 delivered. I had a battery problem with my 04 L322 in France one summer and it only cost me £150 delivered and fitted by a local French garage. I do recall a comment by the guy that produces High Peak Autos videos saying that there is no point buying genuine OEM new parts for an old car as the investment equation doesn't stack up. He recommends third party or secondhand parts. I tend to get my servicing done by a bona fide LR agent, to keep the records sweet, but buy my parts online and get my local garage to fit them or do it myself. I do understand that if you take the car to a LR garage then you will have to pay the high hourly labour costs and prices for OEM parts. Like you say these are not cheap cars to own despite their low (comparatively) second hand prices. I had a 04 L322 for 2 years and it was a dog with it's electrics. It cost me nearly £3500 with various electrical shops trying to rectify the problem; it was never fixed. I have owned a 08 L322 for 3 years now and it has been a dream car. Only had a one light come on - Engine Management - but as I had a Carly ( great product) as soon as I plugged it in the light extinguished and not had the problem since. Just a piece of advice to prospective buyers of the L322; do a gearbox oil, filter and sump flush and change on purchase if the car has over 100K miles on the clock. Further, replace the 3 transaxle gearbox oils as well; you could do this at home if need be. Another piece of advice: if you consistently buy fuel from the supermarkets it is likely that your Engine Management light will come on as the fuel quality is not as good as Esso/Shell/BP fuel. If this happens, add some Redex fuel additive to the tank on a fill and it should extinguish the lamp. Failing that buy a Carly; they work. I've been very lucky as the car has performed faultlessly in the 3 years of ownership. Therein lies the trap of owning one of these marvelous cars; it could be a dog and tear a hole in your bank account, or it could be an absolute honey and apart from servicing, cost you nothing more. As you imply though they are in a class of their own to drive and once you own one you'll be hard pressed to want any other car. Look forward to more videos.

I totally agree with all of this. They’re amazing but they don’t have to cost huge huge money. I’m a big fan of cheap OEM, or good quality aftermarket parts and a decent LR specialist which keeps the costs down. My highest bill has been £1600 ( which was covered under warranty so technically wasn’t my money ) Most other bills have been £600-800 on average. Always shop around for decent aftermarket parts with a 12, 13 year old car. An example is - my power steering pump has started to go, New part - genuine - £900…. Aftermarket £350, second hand £50. So even with the labour costs, that would mean I’d have to change it 3 or 4 times before I spend what I would by buying genuine. Amazing cars, worth every penny but no point paying way over the odds for them.

Taking out the purchase cost and the compulsory tax , insurance and fuel I don’t think those running costs are that bad , you are only really looking at maintenance during that period as any other car would have had compulsory costs , ok maybe a bit less but for what you are getting it’s reasonable.

Lucy…if you are going to own any older LR product, you’re going to need to tackle most of these issues and arising problems yourself…..you’ve thrown away £350 on the new battery for a 10 minute job. You can recode the battery with the Carly too…. You bought yours at a great price so no point in giving back your advantage by not doing some DIY…. If you need help just ask in your videos… so many people will be glad to advise and even help out… there is a great community of LR owners…. 1 must have feature is Apple CarPlay (or android auto if you use one of those things)… can be added for around £500 if you DIY…..keeps everything oem just adds Wireless CarPlay. Also… I live very close to worthing and there have been many thefts recently…. Targeting LR products…. (Mine included 😢) Please hide your OBD port… takes 5 minutes and will prevent the theft.

Great review however some points for anyone consider when buying any second hand luxury car, especially anything from Land Rover. 1. Luxury car second hand might seem a bargain, until you start repairs and servicing. Luxury car will always have Luxury car level servicing costs and terrible reliability. Which is why they depreciate so much in value out of warranty, especially after five years. 3. Ah but what about extended mechanical warranties, read the fine print and conditions they cover bugger all really and often cap at a low annual limit of 5k-10k. Couple minor repairs and one medium you'll hit the cap. Range Rover breaks it's Air Suspension or some other major repair the vehicle is a write off. 3. It isn't the fancy multimedia and big screens you're missing out on with a 10 year old Range Rover, it's the Safety Rating. Last 5-7 years especially have seen big improvements in car design/safety. Range Rover might seem big and safe, but it's safety rating and crash survivability will be a lot less than a new Toyota Corolla. 4. The only reliable Luxury brand to buy after 5 years old and out of warranty. Lexus. 5. Clarkson can afford a Range Rover, most people can't. And if you can't afford one new, you can't afford one second hand either.

The levels of derangement in Range Rover owners, especially those with old cars, is incredible. A litany of faults and grief and huge costs, massively uneconomical and not eco friendly, and STILL the excuses come out. The cult of Range Rover drivers. It’s like ‘yes they’re terrible to run but I can afford it’ so I guess good luck to them. And of course if Jeremy Clarkson said it, it must be true and justify the costs. Keep pumping your money into the economy guys, it’s good for the GDP.

Wow. You've spent a fortune on some issues that are easily resolved at home. If your going to run an old land rover product which weren't ever blessed with the best build quality-you really need to bust out the tools and do the work yourself. It will save you lots of money.

Just get the battery spec/info, get a battery delivered from a online retailer with a four year warranty literally for a fraction of the price and then get a friendly mechanic to fit it ffs. It's not very clever to pay through the nose!

@@tristanboler2782 the previous owner of mine broke the plastic cover in front of the battery box trying to fit the new battery. Lucky enough only $10 from LR dealer, but good to remove that bit when fitting a new battery as it's brittle plastic.
