My father had a sterling Coupe and a 827 coupe. Both beautiful cars, quiet, smooth and so reliable. My father wasn't concerned with the fuel, being an accountant. I remember the interiors being superb, especially the leather, as good as a rolls leather inside. Can't recall any problems. Eventually they were sold and a smaller more practical car was purchased, a IS200 Lexus. Great review, really good. My dad had the coupes for ten years so our experience of them was pretty good. I think the expansion tank was replaced and the usual servicing parts. They were always well serviced and garaged.

Beautiful car from back in the day were cars were still distinguishable. It's also in great condition! Nice cheap classic to enjoy. I might be cursing, but an LPG tank in the car could solve the millage/gas thing. Older cars hardly have to be modified for that, because they had quality parts. And with an lpg tank, you can still drive on regular as well. With this low millage, i think it would still be worth investing in. I get the thing with the cd's you found. Give you kind of that melancholic feeling, by finding personal belongings of a man who has lead his life, and has now passed away. Anyway, have fun with it!

I'm in the States and I remember seeing adverts for these cars in some of the American car magazines (Car & Driver, Motor Trend, etc.) when they imported them in the late 1980's when I was a pre-teen. They looked really cool. They had problems though with quality and craftsmanship from what I've heard (similar to the Merkur cars) and I guess that's why they didn't stick around in the American market for too long. Looks like a really cool car though! I'd imagine the British cars were better-made over there than whatever North American source that they used for the American cars. I don't think they imported them from Great Britain, although I could be wrong....it was over 30 years ago. Really cool video! New subscriber from me!

I really don’t like the way modern cars are going, I’m really not a fan of these bloated SUVs which are plaguing the roads. I really think the golden era for cars is behind us as modern cars with horrible down sized eco engines seem to be designed to appease the environmentalists and politicians rather than the keen driver. I drive a 1998 Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6 Ghia X and hope to keep it going for a long time. My nephew loves older cars too used to have a mk1 1989 Rover 827 a couple of years ago, it wasn’t the Sterling model but was still quite well equipped which he regrettably sold, however, on Saturday we are going to buy a 1999 Rover 825 Sterling which amazingly must be one of the only ones left without dashboard lift!!! Both me and him can’t wait to get it and run it alongside the Mondeo. One day we hope to own a Rover SD1 3.5 V8 but the values on those are really on the increase. Really enjoyed watching your video, the part with the previous owners CD’s was quite moving, you’ve definitely got a good car there mate. I’m sure the original owner would be so happy that the car which must’ve been his absolute pride and joy has gone to someone like you who really appreciates it.

really nice cars, had the 827SLi, Sterling and an 825 Sterling. Honda 2.7PGMFi were the best, used to see fuel gauge going down in real time when driving hard. Tires squeal around the roundabouts and corners! Great cars. Honda Legend practically same car. 177BHP, for the late 80's, PGMFi injection & v6, it was FAST! Japanese versions had an added turbo

I had a Rover 420Gsi Sport, which I got dirt cheap as it had been a pool car at my place of work. 6 Yr old when I bought it. 120k on the clock but had full service history. I had used it many times at work and was very impressed with how nippy it was. Full leather interior, alloys, electric everything...loved it and a bargain at £1500. It was a weird metallic green with a hint of blue. Hated selling it as we bought a house in an area littered with speed bumps. As the car had been lowered it would have ruined it. Had it for 3 years and it never missed a beat. Rover got that one right. 😊

It's a lovely car and it doesn't owe me a penny done over 25,000 miles in it and had it over 4 years now. One problem I do have though and it's off the road atm is the gearbox (Honda as we know haha) is pissing out oil like crazy I'm just glad I wasn't driving it at the time. I was preparing it for a long journey and noticed hissing and oil spewing everywhere underneath while it was idling. I thought it was power steering fluid at first but no it's gearbox so am hoping it's not too much of a pain to fix as would seem a waste for the car to be out of action and condition is still really nice and runs spot on.

Great car Hypalinx. I have exactly the same car, albeit in dark Grey rather than BRG, and the interior on mine is the same colour as yours. I also own a 1987 E-reg Mk1 825 Sterling and a 1987 Mk1 D-reg 820e. A small nugget of info about them is the floor mats you mention, Rover Sterlings only ever came with 3 lambs wool mats, all for passengers. I suspect the driver was supposed to have a rubber mat or thinner carpet mat but somehow they were never supplied. I sourced myself an original rubber Rover 800 drivers mat. Very difficult to find now.

Had one around 94-95 The automatic gearbox was dodgy and the heaters have a history of packing in, every scrap yard I visited searching for the same cars all had missing heaters. Watch the fuel gauge, they tend to lie lol, when mine read quarter of a tank it meant i needed a garage ASAP

Touch wood I don't have these problems haha I hear the horror stories from back in the day. Gearbox is spot on, literally can't fault it right now very smooth doesn't slip and sport mode works as it should with cruise control etc and climate control all working including the air con after all these years. I will check how accurate the gauge is now after reading this, it says 68L tank so i'm gonna check how much it takes to fill when needle is almost at the red, never had the light come on yet, don't dare risk it. Time will tell, even if it lasts a couple of years though can't complain for the money.

True haha, it's actually not as bad as I thought though having driven it more especially on a long run. Seems the tank has a massive reserve, so when the needle hits the red it still has about 10 litres in the tank! I thought something was wrong with it.

@@Hypalinx They are unbelievably reliable but if you are concerned about the running costs of the 827 don't buy a Turbo R as you won't manage more than 9mpg. I used the Turbo R daily and I can assure you it was juicy but reliable and easy to work on just heavy to work on as everything was over engineered which in my opinion is good, I also had a Silver Spirit and that did about the same MPG as the Turbo R.

Hi i think its retro and has character and in today's car market thats appealing. It has loads of extras and ok it wobbles a bit in regards to the fittings but strangly i like that . As for the actual drive its solid and smooth . And if you bump into one of these carbon skinny jean cars your smash them to pieces . I agree it looks a bit maniacally depressed and something about the head lights say it might have homicidal tendency but its like a old soilder that keeps on going from battle to battle . Lets face it its far more realistic . Ya john wick looks cool an all but in reality hes unrealistic. This car at some point before 2 pac got shot was a sex symbol . Onlookers marvelled in its successful look . Woman gave sexual glancing looks at the driver . Its likely seen some action in its day . A few happy endings have surely took place . Which makes the leather even more appealing. Yes at some point those seats were as creamy as the end of a cows t#t but Its clearly been well maintained . Engine looks nice and the honda 2.7 v6 is very strong . The boots massive which is never a bad thing . They are thirsty buggers . Its worth checking the thermostat incase its running colder but tbh they drink like a gang of alcoholics who broke into a off licence but you have others like a pimp so in the same way you wouldnt take the skinny one to all you can eat restaurant or the fat one to an expensive restaurant make sure you pick your timing . Its a cruiser so for late night motor way sessions thats your toy . Some people tune these up and stick a huge turbo on it . Wrap em and put huge wheels but for me thats going to far . I bought a old s class mercedes for my motor way cruises and its brilliant and like yours it makes sure i find petrol garages that i never knew existed . However it turn me on like a megaways jackpot with huge potential . I can eat a takeaway in any seat and not feel like small cars make me feel which is like a human rat . Noring away elbows squashed against the glass . Knees slapping into my chin like some sort of self sucker . Oh if i could i would but thats another story . Head rubbing off the roof like a forgotten party ballon in a disused warehouse or old storage locker . Steering wheel pushed into your chest and tryna hit the indicators in some sort of sideways nipple flicking movement . Nope i like big cars thanks . Something nice on the radio . Slouching back chilling out . Maybe even a danger bank but thats dependent on the music. Ok its not all perfect . The lights at night make you feel like your crawling up free willys as# with match thats been split in four with a razor blade by Russian convicts and the full beams were surely intended as some sort of advertisment for lampposts. But that indicator noise is soothing and the clicks are intentional unlike new cars . The fake clutch was clearly fitted by someone from silicone valley who didnt know when to stop . The interior noises make you feel like your on a ship in a storm and each time you drive a new noise appears again and again and again and sometimes it can become to much till your overstretched like a octopus screaming Make it stop MAKE IT STOP PLS FOR THE SAKE OF MY SANITY . A long silence amongst the madness as you become creak deaf and wipe away the tears and blood from were youve bitten some of your tounge out the fuel needle plays games with your head with sudden drops as soon as you look away for a few seconds . Slam fook you driver have some of that it says and the voices start they say ha ha ha watch as i eat through thos fuel like a petrol bomband as you push the often squeeky but yet reliable windows down and spit that small piece of tounge out you sigh a puff of relief and embrass those ridiculous noises and say . Hay you know what i kinda like em . You look at what was half a tank prior to your slight nervious break down and its just hovering over the emergency fuel light like a nat over your exposed testicles in a tent just split seconds before your touch flickers its last flicker. But this is what character is and without it i think it would be bland like a bowl of cornflakes with no milk or sugar . And that simply wont do . Enjoy it

Yeah long time ago, money pit. Seen it up for sale about 4 times since I sold it so the new owners agreed also. Good experience though. I'd love a new XJR 575, my eye will be on one when I move out. Not brand new though, depreciation disaster otherwise.

I've tried a couple of Jags but they feel like rot boxes, I'm not sure I'll take the leap again. I'm just playing with a merc C180 that I paid less than a grand for at auction... what a dream to drive. Daily runner is currently a 2007 Volvo XC90 but again, for a "luxury" car there's a lot of shitty plastic bits. Loving the Rover anyway, great review. Which game bought you that one - primal?? ;)

Yeah i'd only buy a nearly new Jag now, they're only good for the first owner I think, start deteriorating very quick, high maintenance rich mans cars. The garage I used to take my old XJR to, let's just say they're never short of work! Never had a Merc yet my dads had a few, bit hit or miss with those to but for a grand you can't really lose! XC90 big car! Yeah modern Volvos much different than the old school haha. My mate had an 850R until he threw a conrod due to boosting it up! Wouldn't mind one of those but super rare and expensive now especially in a manual low mileage etc. As for Rover nah my brother spotted it, I was thinking about buying it, changing my mind then decided sod it you only live once, even though I don't really have the room for it. Love it though will be keeping it for sure.

When I bought the Volvo I was literally flipping a coin between the XC90 and a Jaguar XK8, both came along at the right time and basically the same price but I knew the Merc was coming up and I knew it would go cheap, there was an issue with the rear electrics and I was pretty sure it was only a faulty SAM unit (it was) so it ended just over £850. I have quite a love/hate relationship with cars, I've lost loads on modern rubbish so I'm at the point now where I'll happily buy an older car, run it for a year then jump ship to the next one.

If you like rover cars that your choice l personally thought they were badly made.

Yes I did read this, I heard the earlier versions of the cars sold to the US were awful and by the time they sorted the issues it was to late for the Rover to continue in the American market. The smart or luckier folks bought a Honda Legend I guess.
