Hey friends! Welcome to another video at Michymilling! 😊 After a late winter thaw, time spent away at our off-grid cabin, a long hard month of looking for Scout, and a very cold and rainy spring, I am finally opening the sawmill for the season! Hooray!
In this video, I take you along with me as I set the mill up again for the season and try out the blade that I recently sharpened on my new Woodland Mills Grindlux 4000 bandsaw blade sharpener (and also re-set the teeth with the tooth setter). How do you think it performed??
Who's excited to see how that hot tub is going to turn out?!? (any suggestions or ideas?)
Thanks for watching, and see you next week! 💕

You can buy an extension fitting for the oil drain, it extends the drain hole so it clears the base and doesn't run all over the base.

I recommend using an oil extractor. If you look online for "vacuum oil and fluid extractor" you will find the one I use. It holds almost 2 gal. of oil; And with the smallest tube of four that comes with it, I can put it down through my dip stick tube and pump all the oil from my trucks and inboard boat engine. It is great for getting all of the gunk from the bottom of small engines. This thing vacuums it all. The great part is that it is already contained for me to dispose at the local auto parts store. I should be a salesman for them, it really is worth the money. I now change the oil in my generators and lawnmowers more often because it is so quick and much cleaner. Hope you all stay healthy.

Michelle you a lovely nut to watch with all your talents. Over the years I've got to appreciate my Mobile Dimensions mill built in Oregon with a large circular and the smaller edger blades. The teeth on the circular blades are so much easier to take out and to sharpen and the Volkswagen engine never quit on me yet. Having the mills put on trailer wheels helps to move the mill to your timber supply!

Seeing you removing all of that sawdust, i am reminded of cleaning up machining equipment in the machine shops that I used to work in and meals at home growing up. I know, funny pair, right. #1 rule of meàls, "the meal isn't over until ALL of the dishes are washed, dried and put away! #1 rule of machine shop, the job is not complete until the machine is cleaned up, ways oiled and chs are in the scrap bin. Ask a sheet metal fabricator to build some pans that fit under your mill, with handles to grab to pull out from under. Add a piece of flexible drain tile to the discharge of the sawdust on your mill. Place another long pan with beveled edges to catch the sawdust. Cut the top out of a 235 gallon water tote to place your sawdust into. It will have a fork rackable pallet underneath for transport and unloading. Get a wagon gear and rack for your milled boards with a "stick" bucket or basket. Add droppable long sides for unloading with front loader. 0lace this wagon gear at the open end of your mill. Get another wagon gear for your slabs. Place one opposite of your log pile. Build a rack for this wagon with fireplace sized cutting grooves for the slabs to be cut into firewood. Get top quality bades for longevity and smooth cutting. Pick up a metal detector to scan your logs for blade killing metals. Place a weed barrier and gravel around your mill for traction and eliminate muddy conditions. Watch the KZfaq videos on maximizing the performance of your Harbor Freight bandsaw mill. You are young now, but hopefully you will lead a long life. Get things in order and save your back with these suggestions. Great setting, great video.

Equipment maintenance and protection is all important and pays dividends in the long run as you know. Love watching everything you ( or Steve) undertake. The ore car will make an innovative hot tub once you line it with cedar. Perhaps grinding the rust off & spraying with Rustoleum will ensure it lasts indefinitely. I've always appreciated out of the ordinary uses for abandoned items like your ore car. Cant wait to see the finished project and your next video. A bluenoser from the opposite coast..

Oil change tip: Next change, have a 6" pipe nipple ready and install it instead of putting the plug directly in the block. Now the next time you change the oil you can drain it without it getting all over the place and have a catch bowl under the end of the nipple. This has been a public service announcement and we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Hey Michelle, love your videos, especially the ones where your "playing" with your mill. I used to have a buddy with a portable Woodmizer who would come by and mill logs from my property. Unfortunately he moved out of state. I really miss those days - he was really good at "eying" the logs for optimum yield. Got to do the entire upstairs flooring with red oak trees that uprooted during a storm. BTW, you might want to space those cedar boards between layers so they air out and don't rot on you. Cheers, Bernie.

For the oil I wouldn't do a vacuum pump that leaves crap in the bottom of the crankcase. A piece of gas pipe and a cap is what I did on my compressor. It was quarter inch which measures about one half inch. Hardware store didn't have a cap that small so used a union on the end of the gas pipe and then a pipe plug in the union. Total cost 12 dollars. Hardware I often go to is a little high. My brother had a firewood business.in Alaska but came down with leukemia. He was a forest engineer for several years. He would enjoy your adventure. Best of luck to you.

Wow, l'm impressed how well you handled all that equipment. If l may suggest clean all that sawdust away in the fall. That way the metal is not sitting in wet sawdust all winter. Another trick is to use a magnetic oil plug to catch any metal fines in the oil. This way it keeps the suspended naturally wearing fines out of the oil and catches any larger bits that could indicate a problem. Plus l always run all my small equipment out of gas for winter storage to avoid gumming the carb up. You can also add a winterizer but l never bother.

It’s been awhile since I watched your videos, so I had to check this one out, your setup looks great on the sawmill, as for changing oil on a Kohler engines there’s two plastic plugs one on each side of the engine, the one that is set higher is for filling and the other is for checking the level, you leave the lower plug out then fill from the higher one, when the oil comes out it’s full. Glad to see you got the sharpener and setter now your rocking for years to come.

You can make portable air tanks, they make them for filling tires and stuff too so you don't really have to "make" one entirely. They have them with gauges and a fitting already on them too. Can usually find little 5 gallon ones for pretty cheap, usually max 125 or so psi. I made one as a "booster" tank for running my 1" impact. My little compressor charges itself plus I connected the standard 1/4 inch line to the portable tank, and I added an output fitting for 1/2" line to connect to the bigger air gun. You could just leave the 1/4" fittings and connect a little blow off nozzle after charging it up tho and take that down with ya for a little blow off action. I like the husky air gun at home depot with a little 1/8" nylon plumbing straight tee or whatever it's called (to join 2 lines) jammed into the end and it makes it way stronger.

A teeth setter is essential, I bit the bullet and bought one from Woodland. Because my 126 doesn't have adjustable guides I decided to flip the saw unit 180 degrees on the track so the saw blade entered the wood from the log stop side, not only does that really help reduce cut 'wave' as the blade dulls, it also greatly reduces blade wear because the blade is entering the wood on the clean side after the first cut is made and the log is flipped with the fresh cut against the stops... this eliminates dragging dirt into the cut.
My honest opinion - Woodland Mills HM126 bandsaw sawmill
