Here is the continuation from last week. This part felt slow going - there was really so much time spent doing the fine-tuning stuff, and doing it by yourself just makes it take so much longer. However, I feel really good about where things are at - I actually almost feel like I'm no longer on the steepest part of the learning curve with all of this building stuff. I'm still climbing hard, don't get me wrong, but I'm feeling just a bit more competent! (watch - next time I go out, I'll find a huge mistake LOL). 🤪🤪
Ok - so although my floor was square, it was slightly bigger than 10'x10' (width was about 10'1/4" or so) and my beams were cut to 10'. So one side (the right side) has a bit of a ledge or lip, so I wasn't referring to the edge of the subfloor for squareness of the wall structures. Does that make sense? As I'm writing this, I'm thinking what I could have done was drawn a chalk line and referred to that, or put tape on the floor, but all too late now.
I am away from this build for a couple of short weeks as we're heading out on our camping trip (plus have the stupid camper reno project that needs to be done too), but am officially on 'holidays' from my nursing job for a solid few weeks, so should be able to get in quite a few days of work on the cabin build.
I'm slowly sourcing out the rest of the doors/windows etc. I will be back on the mill to mill up a bit of new lumber (I think - depending on how bad Phil and Buster messed up my wood).
Oh - and we might have some news to share soon too! It's a bit too soon to say it's a for sure thing, so I'll wait until I know more.
Thanks everyone for joining me and cheering me on from both near and far! I really love the little community of people I've got here with me, and always appreciate your kind and thoughtful AND helpful comments.
See you soon!
Michelle 💕

Funny what you will do when you have a flat and there is nobody around to help, or gas stations open to get air. I was a plumber and had a tube of lavatory caulk in the truck. I got a chunk of T-shirt, covered both sides with caulk, punched it into the hole with a screw driver and let it set 30 minutes to cure. Then pumped up the tire we with a bicycle pump, and it held for 3 months. I couldn't believe it, but you do what you gotta do in a pinch, and pray it works. Good Job!

When I was 12, Dad saw me struggling with a long screw, probably slotted. Gave me a bar of soap, rolled the screw in it. Sometimes spit on the bar to moisten her up. Made it much easier. No screw guns in those days.

You should be pre - drilling those long screws, use a 6" - 8" long drill bit that is smaller in diameter than the shaft of the screws. Also, use wax on the threads, they will drive easier. Screws that long can generate excessive heat which can spal the screw threads. If the roof is going to be a gable type, you can build a simple box type eyebrow for the rear to create the overhang you desire.
@nakulah

It helps for sure, but actually the manufacturer of these screws states that no pre drilling is required since they are self tapping

You're doing a fine job but, maybe a little too perfect. Hre in Alaska, we build but don't worry so much about everything being in sync. As far as the long screws, it is always better to drill a hole first and then screw them down. I do give you credit, you are not a slacker and you always find a way to correct things. Good job.

I would agree. When I saw you measuring corners multiple times, I thought you might be overdoing it a bit. If you’re building a trailer for the road, you need it to be very square, but a house in the woods doesn’t need that precision. Things can be done to hide imperfections when using wood. I admire how hard you work and I know no female that has your capabilities. You’re a gem!

Bombproof attachments would be to get a long auger bit and drill through all the pieces and drive a hardwood peg down into them. I would have lap-jointed the top breams so they are in the same plane. What kind of roof is going to happen I wonder? A shed with the tall side out would be good. Or a gable with a night pitch so you have a second floor, and/or a gable ceiling with a loft, and you could add a dormer too. Easy to be an armchair carpenter when you are the one doing the heavy lifting!

Fun to watch people transform matter into useable things. I was always fascinated by carpentry and repairs. Growing up poor, you had to make it, fix, or do without. It's amazing to compare notes on land development. I have a sawmill, and made my first chicken coop with cedars that were scorched from the Caldor fire. We lost the ranch, but now rebuilding. We have a bunch of trees that survived. We have 4 acres of ponds, and lots of water, I think it helped us with surviving trees. Now I have to go get cancer surgery, if that comes out fine, which I'm told it will, I'll be back at it in a few months! I just got an ecoflow pro, but now need to get the proper solar panels.

Once you get your solar sussed out, you should think about Starlink for the cabin. It uses about 100watts max. Then you can stay in touch with the outside world... the outside world can stay in touch with you. Unplug it when you don't want the world (I do this a lot with my mountain house). With a polycom box you can even setup a free phone. But only give Steve the number.... or not. It'll save you having to make a 30min trek to get a signal. Agree with others, pre-drill for long screws. Less chance of snapping them. Tip, keep a bar of soap handy to grease the threads on long screws. They don't squeak so much and the soap helps keep the tannins in the wood from attacking the screws and leaving weeping marks.

bring a chunk of beeswax makes screwing easier, nailing too! Nothing is ever truly square. Drill pilot holes. Buildings move, nails bend, screws break. The nail has been around for thousands of years, the wood screw is a recent invention. In tension, nails will pull out b4 screws but in sheer nails are damned near as strong as screws.
