Man, that sucks! I know when we got our Scag this summer I was like a kid at Christmas waiting to mow. I can understand the frustration. It's "nice" the dealer is good to work with, but in your defense, you did drop quite a stack of Benjamins on the mower to purchase it, so the expectation would be that they are good about it. I find it amazing that the stop was fast enough, and solid enough with enough torque to loosen a blade.

Oh my gosh, is this your first mower? You show me any mower including zero turns whose belts don't vibrate and I'll tell you , you better start the engine! Had countless mowers over the past 40+ years and that belt your showing is one of the smoothest running. I would just enjoy that nice mower and quit looking for problems that don"t exist.

Another mystery of the universe. For every story I see like this, I'll see another of someone with something like a 15 year old Troy-Bilt Pony lawn tractor with hundreds of hours, still running even though it's been abused & the maintenance neglected.

This is a necessary follow up. I may not have discovered that paint missing near the pulley indicating an underlying problem. That occurred at the dealer during repair and indicates something is wrong above and beyond a spindle perhaps. The dealer’s mechanics/techs in my area are clueless. Perhaps a bent pulley or two? Had you waited or ignored it, you’d be stuck paying for repairs on an expensive mower. This isn’t drama, it’s careful diagnosis. Remember Home Depot would have taken back their entry level mower already.

I’ve only had one spindle failure on a commercial mower, it had 2300+ hours on it and also drove a slave sheave that turned a vacuum system. I’d have to chalk this up to the small percentage of failures that occur. Usually if there is a defect it’ll show up early on rather than later. How everything got sorted out. I’ve run exmark and Walker for over 2 decades and have been considering a scag for my next mower, no longer cut commercial but have a large lot I own. I’ll never buy non-commercial equipment after running them for so long. Probably outlast me at this point.

I have been a fan for awhile. I believe you are making a moutain out of a mole hill. 1 spindle failed so obviously it was defective from manufacturing. It was corrected immediately so there is nothing to complain about. Scag has been known for quality and dependability. I am definitely not a fan boy of any mower brand. I have owned many and worked on them, I have never seen a premature failure that early in the spindles life, so I would assume that 1 defective spindle in the 10's of thousands they sell doesn't create any cause for concern

Belts flopping and springs hitting, but when it's up full blast the one belt don't flop so bad, also check your pulleys make sure they all line up, my idler pulley was a little lower so I put a space washer, now it's not so bad, but like you said...1.6 hours, and get this. I bought it 2 hours away but when I brought it to a closer scag, they wouldn't help..w.t.f, they said I had to bring it were I bought it, what if I moved out of state, they talk alot of shit till they have to fix it then it's a whole different story

The belts do vibrate. However, I would make them replace the other two spindles. Chances are they didn’t get greased initially, prior to the purchase. That’s part of the dealer’s responsibility in installation. I don’t think it’s a Scag issue, but rather a service department issue.

Maybe the tensioner was damaged during the spindle siezing up! The tensioner is there to take up the slack. They should swap out that deck for another one and start fresh for that kind of money. It's very hard to forget a bad incident that wasn't addressed properly and that alone puts a bad taste in your mouth, enough that it would cause you to look at other brand names.

Bruh, I bought the same mower. 6 hours of use, and i filled the tanks with fuel. The right tank started pissing fuel through a pin hole on a seam. It's really not a huge deal. I returned the mower to the dealership, and they are putting a new tank on it. Sure, it's a frustrating deal, but I think it's just part of working the kinks out. They are super beast mode mowers, so im looking forward to many years of fun mowing, with some comfort that a lot of others dont offer. Best of luck on yours, mate.

Just run it for a few weeks on your property, cut tall grass at highest setting, then recut at desired setting. You’ll see how the belts sets in, the pulleys-run, and just break it in. At 15 hrs or so see what you think. Give it some time now. Just MHO.

Okay I get it you're disappointed. I have spent $150,000 on a machine and have had troubles from the very beginning first day out and never had another day's trouble afterwards. It could have been a bad spindle maybe it was not greased or what I suspect is that the blade was never tightened down and it had some wobble in it and it destroyed the spindle. So you can only blame it that one area the spindle area it's fixed it's over with don't get yourself in a frenzy over it. His far as the belt vibrating back and forth up and down that is normal in anything I've ever owned or run when you get a long distance between spindles naturally if there's no guide wheel there it's going to move back and forth. Either traded in for something else or prove to your audience in yourself that she is an awesome piece of equipment that's your two choices run with it or trade it in Kama story over unless there ends up being more to the story

I have owned and operated a lawn company for 33 years. I am semi retired but still do all of the maintenance and repairs on my equipment. The belt burn was likely from the belt when the spindle locked up. I see belts hop off like that a lot. Mostly from the guys starting the blades in extremely tall grass or hitting something that stops the blades. I replace about a dozen spindles a year. They are not are well made as they used to be. There had to be something wrong with that spindle though. I have never had one lock up. That being said, like RV's mower manufacturers used pretty much all the same parts. More commercial mowers may use more heavy duty parts than homeowner models but basically the same. The belt shake is normal. If you looked at it the day you bought it it would have like had the same shake. If you start getting belt shake that you can feel in your seat look foe a bad spindle or bent pully. Maybe the worse shake I ever had on a mower was when a small pine cone got stuck in a pully. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I think it was a bad spindle that resulted in a bent pulley or pulleys. When something let’s go, peripheral damage may result. His dealer has to anticipate this phenomenon. Years ago, these machines were more simple, less costly, lighter. Not so today. That said, the Scag has amazing quality and intuitive design. I’d contact Scag and have them send out a rep - resolve it or return mower.

Well I won’t tell you what you shoulda got, just my opinion…. i had a bush hog ztr at one time and hated having to worry about greasing bearings all the time, especially when i was working my equipment in a business setting. Replaced that with two exmarks that only need to have the idler greased like once a year. I put a few thousand hours on one and replaced the engine and she is still running just fine today. Other one has almost 800 hours on it and i have only replaced one pulley in its entire life. Exmark parts are ridiculously expensive also so join the club.

Hi, I own a 2021 SCAG Tiger Cat ll with the 52 inch velocity deck. I noticed when mowing the harmonics change up and down in pitch. I hope I'm explaining myself correctly like a HMMMmmmmHMMMmmmm. I took the mower back to the dealer after 10 hours. The mechanic and I both thought the noise is vibrated through the self adjusting spring(s) tension. Nothing was done at the dealer other then some reassurance.

I’ve had a John Deere Commercial 930M for 5 years no issues at all. I have only changed the oil and blades. It’s got about 400 hours on it. I have a neighbor and a friend who I recommend the same mower too. They have both had engine problems on theirs one about 10 hours in and the other was under warranty as well. Maybe it’s infant mortality due to quality of components issues? They don’t make them like they used to. Good luck on your Scag let us know how it all works out. I have been running Scag for 20 years. I have had a lot of the models in that time. I have only had to replace a handful of spindles in all those years and they were all on used machines. I still have in my fleet a 2010 turf tiger with a 61 inch velocity deck with over 8000 hrs on the spindles. I did have one new machine that had a problem breaking belts. After breaking about 10 belts, Scag actually gave me a whole new machine. So I can’t complain. Also, in that time, I have owned lots of other brands and yet I still prefer the Scag. I just got the same cheetah ll it has about 45 hrs on it now and no problems.

The belt vibration is not uncommon, due to the length of the belt its inevitable, and yes I do have the vibration on mine and have had no failures with the machine, the only real problem outside of common wear that I've experienced is broken blades due to the rocky nature of Texas. If you feel the vibration is out of your comfort zone then bring it up to the dealer maybe the can lessen it. And yes I do have the cheetah.

Sadly right now every industry is affected by a total lack of quality control on parts, and occasionally finished products, I install blinds for a living ad have been seeing blinds come out of the box with internal components that were obviously broken before the blinds were assembled (no sign of broken pieces). I have also seen it in random items i purchase personally, out of the box problems of every sort. IMHO it is down to pandemic layoffs resulting in factory's hiring new people that either dont know broken from not broken or are being pushed so hard on productivity that they stop caring or dont notice broken parts.
@mmartin156
@mmartin156 2 жыл бұрын
With a 60" deck, that little bit of belt vibration is common and nothing to be concerned about. Scag is one of the best commercial mowers out there and also one of the best cutting mowers. They have one of the highest blade rpm of any brand mower. This results in a clean cut through thick grass. You should be aware that if your soil is sandy, you will go through blades pretty quickly due to dulling by friction of the sand that they suck up with the grass. Be prepared to buy a new set after about 3 to 5 cuts on your property. You can save money by replacing them after 3 cuts and sharpening the old blades a couple of times. You have a quality mower that just had a problem that is uncommon. Sometime things just happen. Be sure that you keep the mower greased and you shouldn't have that problem again. Read your manual and learn how to do your owm maintenance. It'll save you time, money and headaches.

I cut grass commercially. I have a Scag. If you had gone to the bobcat dealer and bought a piece of equipment would you expect them to maintain it and grease it and check the oil and fill it with fuel every time it is used? Sure, things can be overlooked at the dealer but that is not an excuse for not knowing and understanding how to maintain a very expensive piece of equipment. I think all the finger pointing is in the wrong direction. But that is just my opinion derived from what I've seen in two videos.
@countrycutsk8677

Hey my friend after seeing your video and review, I can tell you a couple of things that I have found out owning Scagg products for the last 10 years. The machines I’ve owned are turf, tiger, two and tiger cat 2 and v rides. That being said, I have found out from the manufacturer that these machines are shipped without oil without grease without hydraulic fluid. When it gets to the dealership, they are supposed to take it out of the crate, set it up add all fluids, hydraulic, grease oil, gas, and make sure everything else is in place like the deck being leveled, but just like my dealership they failed to do that. They put gas in it some hydraulic oil, I sent it out the door they could care less if your were deck is pitch right. So if you are a Scagg owner, you need to be a little bit of a handyman/mechanic to do your own maintenance and set up. If you rely on a dealership, you will fail furthermore, talking about the belt vibration I’ve had the same problem with the same idler arm that is on the Scagg turf tiger, two that idler arm from day one was shaking. I remedied that by changing out the bearing that hold the idler arm to the deck. It’s a shame that you pay a lot of money for a machine and you have to do this on a brand new machine. Welcome to the club.

I don't have any issues out of my push mower (used to own a riding mower and boat but had to sell when my dad died) but if I did, I would swap it out once. If it was me, I'd request a new one or a refund and try the same model again. I believe in second chances both with people and products. That's just my opinion. This is equipment, not an RV. You shouldn't have problems with them this quickly. As far as the belt bounce it doesn't look abnormal to me. We ran eXmarks and I think that was pretty normal. I like that eXmark spindles were ungreasable so you didn't have to worry about it. We put hundreds of hours on them without major issue. Eventually things happen but you shouldn't have problems already. 10 years ago when i was in the industry eXmark had something like 60% of the commercial lawn care market and there was a reason why. That's also why Toro snatched them up.

I would say since your deck locked up you might have stretched the idler Polly Springs since that belt kept on getting wrapped on whatever that black bar that you mentioned in your video which might have made the Springs looser which is why you're seeing a more vibration

I completely agree with those who say it's refund time. That's a lot of money tied up and who knows what else may be damaged. For that price your issues are ridiculous. My last zero turn was a Great Dane Super Surfer. It mowed like a champ but after hernia surgery I decided to purchase a used John Deere GX335. Obviously I can't mow as quickly as before and I do have more trimming to do. With that said the comfort of the ride is well worth the switch. Zero turn mowers are awesome machines but they are quite jarring to operate.

Not an expert and not sure how normal that amount of belt slap is. Does the dealer have a like model on the lot to run and compare? I personally would want to just verify that the middle spindle also hasn't been tweaked at all and also verify the blades are perfectly straight and make sure neither are causing added vibrations. The way you described a loud noise and the tractor stalling makes it sound to me like a blade may have got out of time, for whatever reason, and then hit the adjacent one stopping them abruptly. It just seems unusual that a spindle would lock up solid all of a sudden.

I do not like the wobble you exhibit in that deck drive belt. I have experience with pulleys and drive belts on cars and printing presses. The 48" Scag belt drive I bought new had one spark plug that was not firing evenly and after a 2 years I replaced the plugs and the misfire went away. Scag had a very poor exhaust header design and overheats the cylinder head on the right hand side causing reversion and this tends to age that cylinder spark plug and I get an uneven idle sound. That Scag header is crude being angled so flow from one cylinder is fighting the other cylinder.

If I were you I would slightly loosen the nut on the bad spindle and try wiggling it back and forth. If there is slack in it , that would cause it to vibrate, and premature bearing failure. If there is no wiggle to it with the nut slightly loose , tighten that nut back up and cut some grass!👍

I've worked on those triple decks, when the spindle froze the belt, because it's so new, stopped instead of sliding. That much torque is way more than the tensioners are designed for and it pulled everything out of alignment. You shouldn't see that much belt slap on a new deck. Give it a few hundred hours and some spindle wear and that's what it will look like. Send it back. No question. The paint wear (this is conjecture now) probably came when they replaced the spindle and tried the old belt which was damaged and likely just skipped right off a sheave.

Ferris is1500z 48in 3 blade. No movement when new, no problems at 1000hrs. I dont have the front shocks on anymore as they are expensive. Scag has a lot of issues. Everyone i know that has one they are brocken. Should have gone Ferris 🤷‍♂️ I do work on mowers and flip them. Scag is the worst! The best was a dealer john deere LX176 and a GX345. Those lowes tractors are all the same underneath as they are all made by the same company and you pay for the name.

My brother has one so I asked him. He’s never had a problem but his neighbor has 2 of them and told him that one of them had no lubrication in it and the same thing happened to him. After he fixed it and oiled it up, he’s never had a problem since. I didn’t ask about the play in the belt though, I forgot about that. Sorry.

I’ve seen belts flex that much on other brand/type of mowers. If you look at an older car from the 60’s or 70’s with V-belts they have deflection in them when running. That’s partially why car makers went to s serpentine belt design.

My husqvarna stand on zero turn belts slap around just like your scag. I was concerned when I purchased it with 70hrs, i had the dealer throw in an extra belt but they also assured me that its normal for the belt to do that.

JD, completely agree with you! I considered a Scag but in the end went with a Bad Boy Renegade. I have noticed a similar belt deflection at lower RPMs. However, at WOT, there's absolutely no deflection and no vibration on the deck. I believe Scag is a quality product, I just got a better deal with my BB dealer. Based on the video, I suspect that one of the other spindele or idler bearings is about to fail. There shouldn't be that much deflection under "normal" conditions. In the end, you still have a great mower and you'll know everything like the back of your hand! /r Chris

My 54" simplicity always had atleast that much belt movement maybe a bit more. My ferris i haven't paid attention to but in general belt movement is normal on belts diving solely off friction. Cogged belts and such that actually have a tooth engaging teeth on the pulley thats a different story.

I have no experience with mowers. From an outside perspective it seems to be a lemon and I’d ask for a straight replacement or refund. Too much money for it to cause anxiety on if it is performing ok or is broken.

With the rapid stop of the belt when it locked up and engaging the PTO a few times with it locked up, there is probably a flat spot in the belt. That will give you a vibration.

The place that fixed the spindle which I know is where you purchased your mower could just send a tech out to your property and check it. To me that would be a little more cost effective than sending someone out to pick it up again, take the mower to the shop and have it checked by the technician, then deliver it it back you. They could cut the trips by 2. Save on gas or diesel and time especially if the technician tells you that is normal for the belt and all is good. If not the technician could fix it right there if it’s just an adjustment issue.

I don't know about Scag, but on both my zero turns, the spindles have grease zerks, but if you take the spindle apart, they use sealed bearings. I still haven't figured that one out. LOL Personally, I think Murphy's Law reared it's ugly head and you were the recipient of a defective spindle. I would wager Scag outsources components such as that, most likely to an offshore manufacturer. I agree with you that $200 sounds pricey for a spindle. It might be worth your while to take the blades off for inspection and ensure they are balance. Also, take the belts off and spin the pulleys by hand to see if they are indeed spinning freely with no play. Finally, inspect the pulleys to ensure no debris has embedded itself in the v-groove - I have had that happen on several occasions and it creates belt vibration.

With your concerns you should document in writing to the dealer and ask for a written reply. Be sure to ask what they were doing when they put that hours worth of run time. If they say this is normal I would use it for say 3 hours to check it out in heavy grass. I had one yard with my Scag that should have been done with a brush hog. My Tiger Cat cut it no problem. Still using it and this is its 6th year. Whatever you do if you get a refund go Xmark or Ferris if there is a reputable dealer. Good dealers are worth their weight in gold. Commercial mowers move to the head of the line for repairs at my dealer. They know your mowers are your income.
