Thank you for the add, did the same. After talking with a few folks this post weekend, seems that the morels change trees every so often, ash, elm, poplar and apple. My vid is based off the last 4 seasons with incredible consistency.

Yes morels are mycorrhizal with many tree species but their favorites seem to be elms in the midwest. Next white ash, sycamore, apple, tulip poplar, aspen and maple. I have also one or two living white oaks that produce them. If their host tree dies the spores from the fruiting bodies aka morels seem to find a number of different tree species workable. They also love to fruit in burn areas. Thanks for subscribing!

The last two years have been pretty poor hunting, and like any mushroom hunter I won't tell you exactly where I go, especially on here, but I will say just about any state land dominated by hardwoods up here should be pretty good. Just my observation that west of I75 seems to be better for yellows, east for the blacks.

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I just went out yesterday for my first morel hunt of the year, didn't find anything, but it's pretty early for us up here, and chilly. I suspect mid next week the blacks will be out and I'll be post videos of how it goes.

I made a couple of these 4 years ago and still use the same ones..lol just find a small branch with a sharp shoot on it, it's really handy to have the close to 90 deg bend on the end

Hi there, We just started to find the whites in the past 5 days, pending weather (rain and heat) I usually find them through the first week of June. Southern Mi has been finding them for almost a month now. But the ground up here stays colder much longer. So in short, the blacks around here usually pop the end of April-early May, the whites mid May through Early June. I'll be posting another video this week about the whites.

Here are some extremely useful tips to help with timing, wherever you are. Lilacs are in bloom; out in the woods: elm trees are the first to green up...they have green flowers and from a distance it looks like a fuzzy, bright green; ramps are up as are trout lily leaves (but they haven't bloomed yet); also May apple leaves are up; garlic mustard has sent up one thin stalk and there could be 1-2 tiny white flowers on top. Wood violets are in bloom. Dandelions in your yard are just about to go to seed. (Rainy for 2-3 days, humid, then sunny.) Soil temp an even 50F+. Daytime in the 60s, nights in the 40s. Mosquitos have just come out. All these signs should help you with the timing. When the Dame's Rocket starts to bloom morel season is almost over (some call this wild phlox but it isn't). GOOD LUCK!!! I start looking mid-April where I live, USDA Zone 5a.

Very soon, ground temp needs to be 55-60 deg.

It appears to be caused by DED, Dutch elm disease, but I'm no expert..

With Dutch elm disease killing our elms it seems there should be more morels than ever.
