My Shade Garden Has To Have A Mahonia - In this video I discuss Mahonia bealei. It gets bright yellow slightly fragrant flowers in the late winter followed by bright purple berries in the summer that the birds like. There are several new varieties of Mahonia that I will be covering soon as well.

I've had those throughout my property (came with the land) and they are huge! Every year for the last 10 years, they will be covered with fruits and I let the Bird eat them all (idea was to keep them busy while I get to taste my blueberries I'm growing) ... but just recently found out, they are edible (very tart) but great for making Jams (very high quantity of Vitamin C and other beneficial components). Birds will have to deal with a pest in the next growing season!

I have three of these that we're here when we moved in. They do great in the shady, dry area that they are in. I'm getting the yellow flowers now, 7b, but I noticed the birds were picking at the blossoms the other day. I hope I still get the berries. And yes, I do feed the birds! They must be really hungry with all of this cold weather.

Anita Hadley: The birds have been loving my 30 yr old Holly tree (7A).. I don't feed the birds because we have 2 cats & I don't want to endanger them any more. My daddy loved feeding them, so I absolutely love the Holly tree & this wld be a great tree for my shady pond area.. Shade loving & hopefully deer won't eat it lol..

Be aware that Mahonias can be invasive. I planted 3 under a large walnut tree 15 years ago. Many Mahonia bushes now cover the entire area under the tree. In addition, birds eat the berries and drop the seeds and I now have mahonias all over and I constantly pull out seedlings.. Also if not pruned every year they become very leggy.

I can attest to that :) ... we moved to our new house 10 years ago (told the builder not to clear those 'plants' - later found out they are called Mahonia) and I see them growing everywhere as birds gorges on those elongated blueberry (Honeyberry) like berries and you know the rest of the story ... :)

I went to the forest and brought a huge MAHONIA plant, because I love to eat the sour flowers, I would like to multiply the plant but how? Can I plant the prune stems? Weiloi Village Meghalaya India 🇮🇳
