Dear Mr. Nigel, I came across your videos on KZfaq some months ago, and at first I only watched them as a way of relaxing before bed after a long day at work. Seeing your big yard and all of your beautiful trees is very peaceful. Your love of the hobby and trees in general is always present in your videos and It just made me happy to see someone doing something that they really care about. As I began watching your videos and learning from your example I began to want a bonsai of my own. I have chosen a juniper as my first bonsai because I like the strength and character of trees such as juniper, pine & cedars. Maybe one day I will send you a photo of my tree. Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing your knowledge with the world.

I totally agree. The best way to relax, is watch a Bonsai Zone video. As for starting Bonsai, Congratulations! I would give you some advice. Try to start a few bonsai starters as well, from saplings or nursery stock, so you have something to do and do not overwork/overwater your Juniper. Conifers like Juniper and pine, cedar, in my experience, are easier to mess up if you mess with them too much. Bonsai is fun, but unless you have enough trees to work on, you can spend a lot of time waiting for the bonsai to grow. HAVE FUN!!

@@TheBonsaiZone The general rule is to repot deciduous trees before the buds start to break, or very early after, which is a safe method to ensure the tree is still dormant; however you are going to waste all the energy which is still in the roots at the time, and i never really liked the method.

Hi, I was just wondering if there’s anyway to get new buds on the bonsai trunk? I have a few bonsai trees and I lost a lot of branches from my Ficus Retusa during last winter, I did a mistake, I left it outside during the winter. But the tree survived, and it’s healthy now, a lot of new buds and leaves from the spring. There was a lot of dead woods to remove. Is there any way to get new buds on the trunks again? Or it’s not possible? Thank you 🙏🏻
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
The only way would be to let the tree grow wild for a few years to gain lots of vigor and then hard prune it back to just the trunk. New branches should pop out all over the trunk. It is also possible to graft cuttings to the trunk and this may be a more reliable technique! Here is a video on this.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5h2fKhhvJOvkYU.html

Can you recommend a good time to or when one would pot/repot in a colander? To keep the root ball small? Would you recommend doing this to all trees?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
The colander makes use of air pruning the roots. It may get you a better root system than a clay pot, but you still need to do the root work to sort out the structure and ramification of the root system. The fine root system that you get in a colander just gives you more roots to choose from. A tree can be slip potted any time of the year into a similar size or a larger pot with no problems. Root reduction of major root work should always be done in spring after the trees have become active, but before the roots resume growing.

A couple of questions... First I've always wondered why you don't wire your trees into the pot versus using rocks to hold them in? Second, would your comments about repotting if there are only a few white root tips visible apply to a deciduous conifer Larch that is just starting to open it's buds, and has just a few white root tips? I ask because I have a collected larch in a pot that I buried last fall and took out of the ground 3 weeks ago. While all my other larches pushed growth out of their buds more than two weeks ago, this larch only started pushing 2 days ago. I thought it was dead until I saw the first green tips. So today I decided I would risk repotting it (it's been in the 5 gallon planter pot for 4 years). Since it is late in opening it seems to say something was wrong with the tree. When I took it out of the pot I saw a few white root tips, but not a lot. The green leaves on the buds were 1/8-1/4 inch long (compared to the 1/2 to 1 inch length all my other larches have). Thanks for any advice. Bob
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Bob, I don't wire my trees into the pots because I have seen too many root bases ruined with wire marks going across the surface roots. I also like to feel the wiggle of the tree in the pot to be sure the soil is surrounding the roots. Wire is often left on the roots for many many years and the roots will actually grow around the wire and even if you use rubber pads under the wire, the rubber pads can leave flat spots on the roots. If you don't wire the tree into the pot, the tree will begin to rise out of the soil as the pot gets full of roots. It's a good indicator of how your roots are growing and when you should re pot the tree. The stones on the soil also help stop soil evaporation for a newly planted tree. If you live in a really windy area or have animals that could dig up your tree at night, it might be best to wire your tree in the pot and your pot on the bench. I find that many of the fine feeder roots on a Larch will die back over the winter. Trees with a smaller less developed root system will usually open a little later in the year. because of this die back of the fine roots. A tree in trouble will get a bluish colour on the needles, but with good care and watering, they usually get through this stage. Larches like a good draining soil and frequent watering. I will water my trees 3 to 4 times a day in the summer. Watering also helps keep the roots cool on hot days. If the tree is getting too hot the needles will begin to droop. Misting on hot days will help. Here is how I water and fertilize... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nb55fNOputfclI0.html

I have a question. If you acquired a 20 year old azalea. What would your first step of creating it to a bonsai? Consider that it's been in a 19" pot most of its life. And yet it's compact and yet a bit leggy. Thick trunk though.

Dave Busink ,,, if you search azalea bonsai in KZfaq you’ll find a guy in South Carolina who has several vids on the subject. Focusing on nursery stock and dramatic trunk chops. I recently did a bit of backyard Yamadori and have an amazing looking “stump” I’m hoping survives. Good luck.

Hello Dave, I would make the main goal over the next few years to get the roots sorted out. Slowly working your way to a flat radial root base so it can eventually fit in a bonsai pot, I'm sure you will find the roots very tangled and it may take many years to get them sorted out, I do have a video on creating a bonsai root base.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8mDqJuEureUm3k.html

Can you please create a watering video? When I say that I mean. Can you show us your steps to Watering your trees? Can you show us walking around your property checking your trees determining who needs watered and how much? That would be so helpful.

I have a recurring nightmare where Nigel is my dentist... But another quick (completely irrelevant) question. I was always surprised at the Habs sweat pants since you live in KW, but I thought, "It happens". Now I see you in Leaf's sweat pants! What's going on? Sale on sweat pants, or dual allegiance? (BTW, I live in Japan now, but I was born in London, ON, so it's an important question ;-) ).

I'm kind of confused, I was under the impression that you were only supposed to prune off no more than 20% of the root base...It looks like you took off more than 60%.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
It can depend on the health, vigor and the type of tree. The 20 percent rule is a very general safe rule to follow, but these trees were full of vigor and the roots grow really well on Elm trees.
