Excellent video, and I agree that the whole "historical accuracy" argument is dumb when talking about it in the context of the mail protagonist... But if they're going to represent feudal Japan, then you would hope the dev team would do their research and represent the culture properly. Which I've already seen a couple examples of where they messed up some details, which suggest they may not have had a consultant helping them.

Most sources seem to agree that he was a warrior of some kind with a few saying that he was a retainer (I think that’s just a sort of servant). All agree that he served under Oda Nobunaga having been brought by the Jesuits. At least one source says he was a bodyguard to the Jesuits and that source (can’t verify it) says he came to Japan via India where he was a warrior who earned his way out of slavery and decided to work on a mercenary basis

Including Yasuke as a main character does have one major downside. It limits the timeframe the game can take place in. Yasuke was in Nobunaga's service for about 15 months and Japan in total for about 3-4 years. I'm not opposed to playing as Yasuke, but for how long the game was anticipated I was hoping to see the game explore more of Japanese history than the brief time he was around for.

it kinda goes both ways though anyone who says they wanted the MC to be a Japanese male (which does make sense) they are getting called racist even when the ones saying it are Japanese. The price tag alone is enough to make me say no to this game. The biggest thing is in the AC Games the MC was almost always a native of the area it was set it, Altair - Arab Ezio - Italian Connor - Native American etc etc. The Last Samurai was based in large part on Jules Benet a real person and there was some complaints about Shogun but it was "where are all the black people in Shogun" and the answer to that was that during the feudal period there were very few Black people in Japan.

Reading the comments from the Japanese comments in the Ubisoft trailer in Japan gave me new prospective. It's mostly disappointment in how they feel the developers deliberately choose not to include them to represent their ssmurai culture.

He was never Samurai because the title was very obscure until the Momoyama-Edo period. The term was Bushi at the time of Yasuke but he was not that either. He was a sword barer which was a great honor. He was given a Fiefdom which was never done for a foreigner. He was a slave who was trained in India and fought many wars there and the Jesuits took him in and he was given to a Lord as a retainer. So no he was never a Samurai. I spent 10 years in Japan and my wife is Japanese. I studied at the Kyoto Historical institute for 5 years and will tell you no Japanese historian ever said he was "Samurai" because that would be an outright lie. Not because he was black but because they were unheard of until about 30 years after he left Japan.

You're not the only one that likes Odyssey i like it too. Yasuke is a real person, from what i heard is that he was a retainer for nobunaga. If the game is good people won't care but now a days everytime we see a 'woke' character in anything the movie, show, or game turns out to be bad or pushing an agenda so people are on high alert about woman (standard or ugly looking), POC, and LGBT. Coupled with the fact that open world games are getting to big and empty, live service games are getting ridiculous, overpricing incomplete to het more money out of people. To many red flags , but im still getting the game. And AS mirage don't worry about it, its a meh game you're not missing out.

The problem is the writing is already on the wall. You say give it a chance but like how you see with Spiderman 2 you can see the direction and can already tell you weren't going to enjoy what was being produced. It's the same with this game they've already announced the characters will have LBGT elements to them and I'm assuming that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to 'The Message'. I've watched a lot of reactions to this game and I've noticed a lot of patterns really and that is there is a big group of black youtube community throwing their weight behind this game and look I get it, the idea someone who looks like you in possibly the coolest setting AC game is appealing but it's unconscious bias hell if it was a white dude I'd probably be stoked as well but I know deep down it should be a Japanese male main character who is an Assassin not a Samurai. Hell even the studio have said they were looking for 'their' samurai. Yeah I understand there is 2 main characters but we all know this element was brought in to appeal to both male and female players most male players will gravitate to the male MC not to say everyone will but the majority do. I've bought every Assassin's Creed up to now and like you one of my favourites is Odessy as well hell Valhalla for it's story direction questions I enjoyed but I think I'm going to stop here. I see where it's going and I don't like it. It's totally taking the immersion aspect out of it I play games to get away from real world politics yet this game seems like it's going to riddled with it. Anyway respect hope you enjoy the game.

Personally, if this character is a real historical figure who was black, then I think some people are just being overtly sensitive. Of course, if this character was originally Asian and not black or even remotely dark-skinned, then I think the controversy is justified. My usual justification for the concepts of gender, race, etc will usually add up to this: If your character is a legit real-life person and you change something about them that isn't factually ascertained from text or otherwise, then you have committed a disservice to everyone by changing them. If your character is simply fictional, then you can make them however you wish.

I have no problem with a character being black or white or Asian. It's the fact they are saying they are gay. They assume everyone is gay and people like it.

No ones having an issue with Yasuke being in the game. Why cant people understand that. Its the fact he's being an main protagonist in an japanese setting game. In his historical records, he mostly spends all his time serving Oda Nobunaga aka by his "side" because for one no other Daimiyo or lord would see Yasuke the same way that Oda Nobunaga saw Yasuke. Akechi Mitsuhide for example saw Yasuke more of an animal than human and gave him back to the Jesuits and after that we dont know anything else about him. Yes we have an japanese female protagonist Naoe but she's representing the Kunochi (female ninja title) of Iga ninjas. And that her village is destroyed by Oda Nobunaga troops and Yasuke. Like ignore the controversy issue. But focus on the story on how it wont make half the sense. A good game comprises of good well written stories and gameplay. I'm also tired of this nonsense. But ubisoft and sweet baby inc is to blame for their garbage works. And low and behold We got LGBTQ characters confirmed. Optional or not I did not need to know that from ubisoft. Why are they so insistent to tell me unnecessary stuff? And about "The message" Also the last samurai Tom Cruise wasnt the last samurai, people watching that movie missed the entire point of that. Tom cruise was playing as the "Witness" never once did they call him "samurai" it was Katsumoto the character that Ken Watanabe played is the last samurai with his men. All of this rage is disingenuous. One of the main arguments is that he is both *too* historical, and not historical enough, at once . Secondly, it is argued (mostly by non Asian Americans) that the character is offensive to Japanese people, all while preorders for the game are #1 on Amazon, in Japan. Thirdly, there are numerous examples of games using non Japanese characters as the protagonist in them, centered in feudal Japan, with virtually none of this same pushback against them. No matter if all of the arguments against having diverse playable charachtersare met (historical accuacy, continuity, appropriation...) the goal post seems ever shifting. It's dishonest, and it is ultimately just a very vocal minority of ragers, claiming to speak for the majority of those who just eant to play a good game.

First I am not a AC fan, but what I am getting from the crowd that’s against this is that all the other games had the main characters from the region that the game is taking place and that the hypocrisy of a black man mowing down Japanese people, people are cheering but when a resident evil game that took place in Africa and a white character mowing down black zombies were booed. Asians and black people have been racist towards each other. If we really wanted a black protagonist why not set a game in the many hardly heard of but interesting African kingdoms.

As skeptical as I am about Assassin's Creed Shadows, even I have to agree that some of the controversy around Yasuke is a bit ridiculous. Nobody seemed to give a shit about historical accuracy before with Assassin's Creed, yet because Ubisoft is using a black man as a playable character, NOW it's a problem? And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend the company because the pricing for the game is outrageous. But Yasuke should not be one of those issues gamers have. Assassin's Creed was never too historically accurate in the first place, so it just seems off to complain about it now. Gamers today seem to forget that this is a game series based on historical fiction and science fiction. It's not real life. It's a video game. Now, does all of this mean that Assassin's Creed Shadows will be a good game? Maybe, maybe not. But Yasuke shouldn't be among the grievances people have when the game does come out.
