#80s #Rock #Story
Hey music junkies and vinyl junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest 80s songs of all time for the music community and vinyl community.
If you’ve ever owned records, cassettes and CD’s at different times in you life or still do this is your place Subscribe below right now to be a part of our daily celebration of the rock era with exclusive stories from straight from the artists and click on our patreon link in the description to see our brand new show there.
As a child of the 80s, born in the 70s, growing up in the 80s, Like many of you, I was raised on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40. I listened every week without fail, rooting for my favorite song to hit #1. A few month ago I started a new show called the Hit Song Redux where we travel back to a week in the golden era of rock and roll and recalibrate the top 10 songs of THAT SPECIFIC week based on their performance since THEIR PEAK POSITION ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100.
Well after some tweaking, I’m ready to make this a regular feature, including your stories, your dedications and the actual artists commenting on their own songs, All of these songs are in a playlist we’ve created below so you can listen after the video and relive the hits.
so here it is, we go back to this same week September 17th in the year 1988. Coming in at Number 10

Outrageous really. Considering they was the only rock band of the 80s to have had two consecutive selling 10 million + albums that decade in America (from what I remember). All the 7 releases off Hysteria was worthy of being a no1 hit. Really surprised songs like photograph and rock of ages didn't get a no1 either.

The first concert I ever went to was Motley Crue and some band nobody had ever heard of called Guns N Roses in November of 1987. I was only 14, but scored seats right beside the stage because one of the chicks I went with had a mom that was a DJ at a local radio station. When those lights went out and Guns N Roses hit the stage, my life was changed forever, and that's not being hyperbolic. They were absolutely ecstatic, larger than life characters one and all, with a front man you couldn't take your eyes off. I never sat down the whole time, and it was funny because these 2 kids I went to school with were somehow a couple of rows in front of us, the "leader" sitting in his chair trying to act like he wasn't impressed. I just laughed at him. GNR blew the roof off the joint (and blew Motley Crue offstage), and damn near blew my ears off my head. When Motley Crue came on, I was so disappointed at the letdown that I sat down while everybody else stood up, and when I got home my little brother, who was wearing his Motley Crue shirt, ran up to me and asked "WELL HOW WAS IT?" I was like "DUDE! There's this band called Guns N Roses..." and went on a tirade while he looked at me, frozen, and completely confused. After that it I was all about all things Guns N Roses, and it was Slash and Izzy's timeless dynamic that pushed me beyond all inhibition and caused me to pick up a guitar and start to play. One of those life changing moments for sure.

Agreed! But heck what I remember oh so painfully well is finally seeing Back to the Future Part 2 when it finally came out, and seeing that frickin' ENDING which was nothing but a cliffhanger and a commercial for Back to the Future Part 3, including no less than ZZ Top with their spinning guitars! I'll never forget how collectively P***ED nearly the entire audience was while walking out of that theater on feeling we were ripped off by seeing what felt like in the end nothing but a two hour commercial for the next movie! :D I also wonder to this day if I'm the only person on that planet that was hurt a little bit on seeing that DeLorean being smashed to bits.... :)

About as brutal as waiting for them to come out with Start Wars on VCR tape (1982) back in the day. People were practically begging Lucas for it. I remember first seeing Star Wars on a friend's laser disc player (1977) way before the VCR release and I couldn't believe it. Guess I'm showing my age.

Here is the good news. a lot of radio stations (at least 3 that I know of; Omaha, Las Vegas, and Sacramento, and they are all online or have an app to listen with) have their hands on the original AT40 countdowns, and are airing them in their original formats, taking this particular week in a given year, and are airing them every Saturday or Sunday. So we can listen to them all again as if they were airing for the first time!

Appetite for Destruction was the same. There were so many great acts with albums out that year. Besides Def Leppard and GNR, there was Cheap Trick, Ratt, Aerosmith, White Lion, Bon Jovi, Poison, Europe, John Mellencamp, Rod Stewart, INXS, U2, George Michael, the Bangles, Belinda Carlisle and the list goes on.

The 80's generation has two faces. It started out with crazy fashions like parachute pants and leg warmers, outrageous hairdoos like mohawks and the infamous "Flock of Seagulls" hairdoo, and a tidal wave of very artsy, very visual, very synthesized music from Europe, before morphing into loud, leather wrapped, spandex and make-up wearing, rebellious, in your face, party til you puke and then party some more, big hair metal. I lived the entire birth and evolution of 80's rock. It was a phenomenal time for music. The rock concerts I went to sold out arenas and stadiums. Musically, a great time to be alive.

My greatest musical memory from 1988 was when my big brother bought me my very first cassette for Christmas, Rattle and Hum by U2. I was eleven years old. I listened to it religiously for days on end. I studied the liner notes for the lyrics and even guest artists like Bob Dylan and BB King. I fell in love with the band and they became my favourite for many years. They taught me to appreciate the art of music instead of just enjoying it in the background. While I am no longer a mega fan of theirs, I really do appreciate they're 80s and 90s stuff as it had such an impact on my musical journey through life. 1988 was "my year"! It was the first time I started living on my own. My roommate and I were proving to everyone (and ourselves) that we could survive on our own. We worked at the same pool company. We were totally into METAL! We watched Mtv constantly. I had my guitar. He had his bass. We were gonna start a band. We chased after the little rocker chicks. Yeah! 1988. It was definitely my year...

In 1986, a little known band got together. They never topped the charts, never became a household name. Most people can't even name a single song they recorded, but their influence on music was astounding and undeniable. To answer the question in the title of this video, The Pixies happened.

In 1988, I was attending the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning Georgia. Driving from the bachelor officers quarters to the classroom, "don't worry be happy" was playing on the local pop station for the first time. It was such a weird, but catchy tune...unlike anything I'd heard before. All my classmates were whistling this tune as we gathered for morning formation. When I hear the song now, it brings me back to that moment. That was a really good year when; I finished college and became an Army officer. Good times!

When "Welcome To The Jungle" was playing on MTV I was at the "roommate" stage of life. I was walking from my bedroom to the kitchen and my roommate was watching it in the living room. "Who's this?" I asked. "Don't know. First time I've seen this." We listened for a little bit and I said "These guys are gonna be HUGE." He agreed. That has never happened before or since. About 30 seconds of a video and it was obvious how good they were and they weren't one hit wonders. Pretty striking.

Love Bites is the song that caused my husband to feel like he must've been having a mid life crisis when he married me lol. Originally it was his first broken heart song, constantly listening to it after being dumped by his 18 year old self's dream girl shortly after high school in '89. He was devastated the whole summer and fall, until meeting an aspiring model he dated for a couple of years until then meeting his future ex wife and mother of my brilliant step son. He had long moved on from the girl but those emotions were still imprinted into that song for him so those memories came back whenever he heard it. Fast forward many years to when he and I were engaged. It came on near us for the first time at a bar so he recounted that period of his life to me. Afterwards he stopped talking for a second, looked at me, and said "You were in literal diapers meanwhile I was blubbering like a baby to this song." We almost died from laughter. Its easy for us to forget we grew up two decades apart because of how "made for each other" our marriage feels. Now instead of re-feeling that heartache from a break up in 1989 he's reminded a mid life crisis gave him (and I) the dream relationship 😂

Each time I think about "Perfect World", I spring back to how Huey Lewis and his band mates believed the *Small World* album signaled the conclusion of their pop stardom because it only included 2 top 40 hits (the other one being "Gimme the Keys and I'll Drive You Crazy"); the first Huey Lewis and the News LP since *Picture This* not to score five major hits. All the same time, their '80s output would probably translate into one of the most awesome hits compilation records in the history of rock and pop. I barely listened to Casey Kasem when he was alive and broadcasting. I was kind of bummed to learn before his passing that he was not a rock and roll fan. That was hardly better than what I learned about the late Dr Robert Moog who pioneered synthesizer manufacturing saying that he didn't listen to music at all.

Hey Professor! I just stumbled on this channel and have been eating it up like there'll be no tomorrow. I have never had so many goosebump moments as I have watching these Kasem-inspired countdowns. Just amazing. Thank you for that! My story: This Gen Xer picked up the guitar in 1988 after hearing Guns N Roses chart hit after hit and absolutely HAD to learn how to do what Slash did. His riffs spoke to me so strongly! 33 years later, I'm no Slash, but I have performed a couple GnR songs at gigs and happy to say I am still playing and I still follow Slash and the Guns. 3 Chords and the truth!!!
