Because of you, I just purchased my first bible that I will actually read. The Tyndale NLT life application study Bible, third edition from Amazon. It should be arriving any day. I grew up Roman Catholic went to Catholic school did my sacraments that were forced by my parents lately randomly I felt that God and Jesus has touched me in a different way and I don’t know why but randomly I started practicing Christianity and now I want to read the Bible this will be the first Bible I will actually ever read fully Thanks again! 🙏🏻

I enjoyed your updated study bible recommendations and own most of what was on your list, including the Baker Illustrated Study Bible. I've been enjoying your bible reviews which focus on the quality of the commentary and accuracy of the translations. I appreciate how you teach with humility and also make complex ideas accessible to the laity. God bless you and your ministry, JM!

@booklover3959 I like it. Probably wouldn't be a great starter study Bible as having a good base will help understand some of the notes. The notes are great but just might be difficult for a newer Christian. But from just an aesthetics stand point it is great. I love the paper color. Yellow paper has a cool look to it and is easy on the eyes.

Love the Ancient Faith. It's a unique viewpoint for a study bible. One that allows you to think about how Scripture was interpreted before the medieval and reformation controversies. And yes, aesthetically, it's gorgeous too. Perhaps the most striking Bible I've ever owned.

Thanks for the video! I love and have a LOT of SBs. 😅 Hard to say what my favorites are. I think about it by category like "the best illustrated one" (NLT Illustrated SB) or "most detailed notes" (ESV SB, surprised to see this one missing from your list actually) or "best beginner option" (either the NLT STUDENT Life App SB or ESV Student SB -- these are really great with the character profiles, timelines, etc!). I also strongly prefer SBs with more interesting back matter than just a concordance. Particularly love to see a solid doctrinal summary (ESV SBs, Ryrie, MacArthur, Open Bible, etc). Kind of randm but honestly one of the best all-around SBs with good notes, archeology, character profiles, indices, charts, illustrations, doctrine, section (like "epistles") and intertestamental overviews, articles on stuff like hermeneutics etc, reading plans, prayers, just really checking all the boxes -- is the King James Study Bible -- Full Color Edition by Thomas Nelson. That thing is jam packed (I just wish it was in another translation... lol). Ever considered reviewing it?? I don't recall the details but I feel like the notes in this one have an interesting history through various versions/publications up until this newest edition. Seems like you're close to breaking on the "personality driven SB" category too haha. I appreciate your hesitancy but I do think those can be helpful as long as a person goes in knowing what they're going to get. For example MacArthur is just going to give you his opinion, not much fluff. But since I know I agree with him on many topics, sometimes that can actually be a refreshingly quick reference kwim? I would HAPPILY buy you the KJV or MacArthur SBs for review purposes, let me know if you ever decide you want to do them! Love your content as always brother.

I have the nkjv SB from Thomas Nelson and yes, I feel it’s a well-rounded complete study bible, the shortcoming being it’s very vanilla in terms of commentary (I love vanilla flavour, the real good ones!😂). I prefer to study inductively so havent got as much experience with many SBs, but am very thankful for the nkjv SB for its good design, layout, sufficient coverage of cultural notes and so on.

I agree with you 1000% that it is a FANTASTIC resource for serious Bible study because it explains the Textual Critical aspects and the translation decisions. I have it and love it. I am so sold on it that I think it should be the model for ALL serious translations. Sadly though, the NET translation doesn't measure up to the NRSVue or NABRE for a serious academic translation. Hey JM, maybe I can ask you. What kind of Bible would you recommend for someone who is agnostic but searching? As you said, the life application one is great for new believers but is assumes you are already in the faith. The theological SB seems to be in a better category but it's too advanced. I thought maybe an apologetics SB but the one or two that I've looked at seem to be more about refuting current accusations rather then presenting a defense. Right now the only ones that I'd consider are the Quest SB and the Starting Place SB. But what do you think?
@DiscipleDojo
@DiscipleDojo 8 ай бұрын
I gave an agnostic friend a Quest SB, but the answers in it were sometimes really simplistic and unconvincing. Honestly I wish I had just given them a Life Application instead, since it lets them see how Christians not only interpret, but also *apply* the text. So I would be comfortable giving one of those to an agnostic friend. You might also consider the Faithlife SB or the NLT Illustrated SB. Both are engaging, though it's hard to find a print edition of the Faithlife SB, so I might say check out the NLT Illustrated, or even the Cultural Backgrounds SB if they are interested in the history and setting of Scripture and historical questions.

@@DiscipleDojo I have the same concerns with the Quest. The questions are good but the answers are often too simplistic or don't address the heart of the question. The NLT Illustrated SB is gorgeous! I think I overlooked it as a contenter because that's all I could think of it as. I didn't consider the notes themselves. 😅 I wish the Faithlife (aside from being oop) came in the Lexham translation. From what I gather it's a copywrite issue. Well thank you. I've got a little more to think about.

@@SaltLight7How about The Evidence SB by Ray Comfort ??

@@israelrivera3009 I've heard of it but I haven't looked into it. I'm very conflicted with Ray Comfort. I absolutely love his evangelism and desire for saving souls. He's confronted people and in situations that honestly I would be scared of. But I have MAJOR disagreements with his hermeneutics and life application.

Have you ever read or looked at the Readable Bible? I bought one and the entire 27 study guides but I'm still just not sure how it's going to help me learn, study, etc. 🙄😳😢 I just want a good easy Bible but one that also makes me "work" when learning more about the Bible. That makes me dig deep! Hopefully that makes sense. Anyway, I've made it through about 20-30 pages of in the Readable Bible and it's been sitting on the shelf basically since I bought it all. I keep kicking myself because all I want is the Bible straight to the point word for word, plus study criteria for digging deeper, things that will challenge me so I don't keep going dormant in reading and studying. I've bought around 20 bibles in the past 3 years. Recently 4 more to find one. I end up listening to Bible apps and not much study happens. Which breaks my heart because God, Jesus, have done so much and I feel like I'm not honoring my faith like I should. I feel like I break their heart when I fail to read and study. 😢😳

God's love for you is not dependent on how much you study the Bible. Biblical study should feed and nourish you, not bring condemnation or humiliation. I would recommend that you get a Life Application Study Bible and just commit to reading each book of the Bible, one at a time, even if it's just a page or two a day. Don't try to read the whole thing or go super deep all at once. Just take in each book's message and seek God in prayer on how you can live out its message. Then do the next book, then the next, then the next...

You left out the Harper-Collins Study Bible. It is often used in Universities and it is easy to find online in a couple of fairly recent editions for very little money. I had one in my hand today at a used bookstore in pristine condition for $15. I didn't buy it because I have a lot of books. I don't know if I need a study bible yet though. I have been reading through stuff in a New English Bible with my Kindle alongside of me. On the Kindle I have a copy of the ESV and the Holman Christian Standard Bible and a KJV. When I get to something that makes little sense I can always go online and check there as well. If I were to get any more bibles I would get a hardcopy of the NRSVUE. But I can read that on Bible Gateway any time I want.

He reviewed it and didn't care for it. The Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible is probably about as close as he'd get to recommending something in that range with no caveats. He did mildly recommend the CEB Study Bible with the Apocrypha as a secondary reference source, and its notes are somewhat similar to those of the HarperCollins SB (though not quite so extremely skeptical).

It helped alot from things I questioned and understanding the characters of the bible and the timelines was great. I still have it in the NLT but it has no hardcover anymore. But I get into it sometimes had it for 15 years.

My observation is that Study Bible notes are taken too seriously and people wind up affirming the content of the notes as more than opinion because they share the page of Scripture. This is the effect that Rev 22:18 negates when taken seriously. Example: Try telling one of my fellow dispensationalists that Rome is not once mentioned in the Book of Daniel and see if their Scofield induced position that Rome IS (not may be, not perhaps, not could be, but is) represented in the two legs of the image in Dan 2 is not clung to just as tightly as if the Scripture plainly stated the proposition. If the Bible stated different they would believe no different. So give me a Bible with Bible text alone, please.

I'd say the Reformation Study Bible is the best by far due to the wealth of notes and Confessions and Creeds added to it. 95% of today's study Bibles have a highly Arminian view of salvation and other areas of Theology so it's good to have an open study Bible defending the Reformation.
@DiscipleDojo
@DiscipleDojo 8 ай бұрын
As someone who has reviewed around 75 study Bibles I can assure you that nowhere near 95% are Arminian.
@Akihito007
@Akihito007 8 ай бұрын
@DiscipleDojo So you're saying that out of those 75 study Bibles, many of their notes uphold the Reformed view of the Sovereign, monergistic work of God concerning salvation? And that they also espouse the view of Covenant Theology along with equating Israel with the Universal Church as contrasted with Dispensationalism? Or study Bibles that allow for the Eschatological views of Amillenialism and Post-Millenialism?
