My ULTIMATE SECRET For Beautiful Electrical Installs!
Every Electrician has their own little tips and tricks, but Cory's little secret might just be the ultimate electrical life hack. Welcome back to another episode of Artisan Electric where Cory is attempting his neatest consumer unit yet, usually a fan of fitting Fuse Box boards how will he handle this challenge on a Hager board?

Earthing vs bonding - I was doing a design this last week regarding lightning controls and equipotential bonding, connecting that system to the buildings earthing systems. Trying to make sure that ya don't die in a lightning event, whilst maintaining data integrity and safety. Some of the seasoned engineers were going back to the reference books to re-read things....

In relation to the bonding at the end we used to come across medium pressure LPG sites where they'd bond and stake the supply at tank end and property end, it was standard practice to make sure the tank was at the same potential should anyone use powered garden tools around the tank. Outside of that LPG/Oil situation it makes no sense to though. Gorgeous job, shame the Hager board was a bit of a let down quality wise, also prefer FuseBox for DP RCBOs/ lead length etc.

Ground rods are for lightning. You don’t want the strike to enter the house. All exterior metal should have a connection. (Take a class there is a bunch of exceptions). For wired connection they have to be replaced after a strike. They intentionally ionize to carry the ~100kAmps. Don’t suppose this much of an issue in the UK.

16:44 Don't they make plug-on neutrals load centres (consumer units) in the UK? With those, you don't need to run a lead from each breaker/RCBO to the neutral bus-bar. They enable much cleaner installs.

Completely correct to disconnect the pipe from the earth rod. If you ever had an issue with the supplies earthing system then you'd have a potential difference between that pipe and the rest of the installation in the event of a fault. Plus putting it on an earth rod imo wouldn't make much of a difference as the metal pipes entering the ground will act as an earth rod anyway.

One thing that I would suggest on dual rcd or rcd boards is that an emergency light is fitted above it so the average person can see to re set it . Not a problem on fully populated rcbo boards . and can’t think why that earth rod was there when it’s a pme it looks as though the original installer didn’t check the supply ze at the cut out .

"Interesting" earthing facts: most solar installations are floating (that is the DC lines aren't referenced to earth). The mounting system wouldn't normally be considered an exposed or extraneous conductive part so wouldn't normally require earthing or bonding unless you were trying to connect it to a lightning protection system. However the code of practice requires you to connect a functional earth to the mounting system so that in the case of an insulation resistance fault in the array the inverter notices more quickly. It's rare to see anyone bother to follow those requirements, there are strong arguments against doing it and it can cause other problems, however it's in the book and it's also written in most inverter manuals. It becomes especially confusing when you have a ground mounted metal structure that only has DC lines connected to it.

16:14 - So the boys a Garo have questioned the wisdom of packing all the high-load devices next to the main switch. The bus bar has CSA of around 30mm2 and no plastic to limit the load. In terms of heat distribution, it makes more sense to alternate between 32A and 6A - but Im not really brave enough to start the trend. Thoughts?
@andrewcadby
@andrewcadby Жыл бұрын
I'd always assumed that a breaker would run hotter when pulling close to its rating. So a 6A breaker pulling a full 6A would be warmer than a 32A breaker pulling say 10A. I doubt it matters anyway, for domestic, I just put them in whatever order suits me.
@TimmyBoja
@TimmyBoja Жыл бұрын
@@andrewcadby regardless which runs hotter, ABABAB will be more even than AAABBB. Like you say though, with a tick over of less than 5A (or 32+5 with the EV on) there should never be cause for concern.

Is modifying manufacturers product in order to suit installation not a violation of manufacturers product installation instructions? Will the product still conform to standards once it had been modified? For example. If I had bulkhead fitting and made extra cable entry Which had not been designed in. Would this still count as installation in accordance with manufacturers instructions? I am referring here to Ruben modifying wago box.

As I understand it, BS7671 in most cases only requires manufacturers instructions to be taken into consideration, it doesn't require them to be followed to the letter. Indeed things like basic enclosures often don't come with instructions at all. Regarding Wagoboxes, AIUI if you want them to count as maintenance free junction boxes you have to follow the instructions, but if you don't need the maintenance free aspect you can just treat them like you would any other enclosure.

Of course you're allowed to tap a consumer unit, it's just a metal box at the end of the day! Look at any control panel with drives, contactors, circuit breakers etc. you'll find tapped holes all over the place. The better ones have a sheet of metal at the back designed for you to attach things like DIN rail to. Cheap ones you need to fit a rivnut, better ones you can drill and tap.

I wonder you could answer your question on this the UK at one time had flat rate hydro with no hydrometers and it came straight through the fus blocks and into consumer units and later on they went to a hydrometer where they came out of box and two meter and consumer unit. The whole point of bonding a metal gas pipe is that it is metal in contact with the Earth, which can introduce a different potential from the PME Earth. So all possible contacts with the Earth (gas, water, metal framed structures etc) are bonded together at the same potential. Bonding the pipe to its own Earth rod isn't bonding, it's earthing, and dangerous, as there were gas pipes in the property at a different potential from anything connected to the MET.
