Have to be honest, I much prefer it when the lads are filming themselves with the GO Pros compared to having a cameraman. I think they catch so much more content instead of just constant time-lapse with music over the top of it. Would like to see much more of this going forward. Also, Luke is coming on loads, and his confidence is growing constantly. Lee seems like such a great mentor for him.👍

Yes, I think what I'm getting at is that the channel doesn't have its natural feel to it anymore, and videos like this seem to be bringing it back. Just raw, natural footage, not overly edited and just interesting/relatable footage of everyday scenarios. It's what the channel started out like and think that should continue.

Really enjoying Lee's filming, feels much more natural hearing someone explain their thought process. Out of interest, was it ever acceptable to have single insulation exposed on cables in the ceiling? I'm wondering whether the workmanship on show is just old rather than done poorly at the time. Those rcd spurs always give you a dodgy IR reading. Its probably not faulty. If your getting a bad IR reading check for rcd spurs on the circuit

What is the maximum length of Meter Tails that the DNO specified for that installation? Especially as they are passing through the fabric of the building / buried in the wall...? And, as only protected by plastic conduit, should that RCD be reinstated or replaced with a 30ma Time Delay one?

Ignore that, but if over 3 metres in length, then the Consumer Tails would require a Switch Fuse instead of the standard Isolator?

The RCD IR fault I has a similar thing when testing my Am2 build and left the RCD socket attached🤦♂back in 2001 to make things worse the assessor hinted it to me 🤣🤣🤣Always look for electronic devices every time since. Life lessons are always more rememberable than classroom ones

When you put a charger on an uneven surface like the cladding of this house, wouldn’t it be better to use a weatherproof backing board that’s shimmed out at the bottom, to create a perfectly flash surface for the charger to be installed on. Or, couldn’t you just shim the back of the charger itself with ….. And that’s why you watch the whole video. 😁 Did exactly what I was suggesting by the time I got to writing it. 👌🏼 Top man, Lee!

You don't seed a flat surface; you have to make sure the touchpoints as determined by the construction of the case are in one plane, so it doesn't bend. Usually, those points are the area directly around the screws, and in this case, the upper two were sitting on the board while the lower two were sitting on the distance rings.

Was the rod you put in copper plated as most are or solid coper? And how exactly are you measuring the rod resistance without another ground rod as a probe? Looks to me like you were only measuring the resistance between the rod and the board.

How was the swa’s glanded into db, they look to be floating glands. I didn’t realise the main rcd was replaced for a switch. TT system require them?

The main switch in that board should be a 100mA S-type rcd as the feed to the bottom rail is not adequately protected

Single neutral and cpc cables are often used for outside lights at the kitchen rear door as they usually jump of the switch for the switched line

I had something similar when I moved in to our new house the EICR identified an earth issue, I just rang up my DNO, who were more than helpful, in that they replaced all the outside cable (and needed to replace a pole & rewire the neighbours also), and added a TN-C-S ? system (where the earthing rod is at the bottom of the pole) - it took them 5 days (over 3 weeks), after that I had an EV charger installed, and a new meter and isolator installed, so far so good, in that everything is passing all the inspections... total cost todate £600 for a ohme pro charger (which apparently costs, nearly that wholesale? )

Yeh the DNO will often replace a TT system to an TNCS if they can, somtimes the area isnt suitable or the cost just to high.

You beat me to it. Nice, neat install, replacing two boards, two Henleys and a metal enclosure with one neat all-RCBO board, but a DIN rail transformer would've been the icing on the cake.

Was there a reason not to bring the tails to the bottom rail, then loop up to the old DB1? As it happened you had spare length, so might not have been a concern.

Question, I m not an electrician, how do you test the resistance of the rod where are the 2 points of the meter connected, one on the earth cable attached to the rod but what about other end ???

A few concerned about the RCD being removed...... Regulation 531.4.1 is no longer present. There's no requirement for a front end RCD, providing certain criteria has been met, which this install looks to have done.

What is the point of 16mm earth cable on a TT earth rod? The difference in resistance between 10mm and 16mm is minimal compared to the resistance the rod has to earth. Probably regs?

5:55 those are so small earth rods. We have to use 8 foot long ones here in the US, and at least use two of them, with continuous ground wire between the panel and the rod. We also have to use a UFER ground as well into the concrete foundation. They also have to be bonded to the cold water line, however no gas line bonding. The black pipe on the gas line in the house only goes down a few feet and then switches to poly gas line anyway in the ground.

We use 4.5 m (15 ft.) stainless in Austria. Bare stainless wire all the way to the equipotential bonding bus bar and copper from there. All stainless connections are usually welded.

We use as much as we need until we reach bellow 10ohms in my country. Usually takes around 4 or 5 rods(sometimes more sometimes less), lenght of one rod 1.5m (around 5feet). We use SDS max hammer drill to get them in

The readings 12 ohms probably because your running so close to the incoming services , did you apply for a PME ? Rather PME than a TT all day long

TT is preferred for EV Chargers, No chance of a PEN fault on a TT system

@@iainmaclean5569 it's not always the best option though. Personally I prefer a low earth loop impedance over a high one . The reading of 12 ohms indicates close incoming services that are probably connected to PME earthing anyway , it takes a bit more brain work that just "banging a rod in " . @@brucepickess8097 It’s only IP54 rated which only makes it splash proof with limited ingress allowed. So persistent soaking from above could compromise the enclosure.

Americans take note - after installing an earth rod - TEST it. Otherwise what’s the point? You need to know that it’s going to work and thumping one into the ground and then leaving it does NOT mean it’ll operate the safety devices in a fault condition.

I believe the Americans have neutral and earth connected at first panel . The rod is just for back up . But you are right they don’t test domestic.

@@benk9919 no it hasn’t, it just has a new number. Tails that long and the route they take would require earth fault protection which on a TT system would be the use of an RCD.

This is a legit question, it’s okay to snip the seals on the cutout and work on the DNO Equipment , leave the meter sealed up but not check if the meter tails are tight and then not seal back up the cut out and isolator on the meter side ?

I would have seen that RCD SPUR and known instantly that will cause a false reading , when testing , disconnect the CPC out of the RCD spur into a wago or something . School boy stuff

I would have offset the car charger. The hanging basket will need watering and will drip straight onto the charger. They will probably remove that hanging basket.

The DNO cut out fuse is providing fault protection and protecting the tails … RCD in the meter cupboard isn’t needed as all circuits in the new consumer unit should have RCD protection…

Upfront RCD on a TT can be omitted if all circuits on the DB are on RCDs.../ RCBOs . Upfront RCD conflicts with selectivity anyway.

In every other country that uses DIN rails: yes. In the UK, where every device has to be certified for the board it's in and vice versa? Unlikely.

prefer external shed to have its own 13A RCD (better that tripping instead of main RCBO)

No guarantee that the main rcbo wouldn’t trip first, so makes no difference

@@michaels8336 I mean it's on the ring main so you would want the 13A RCD that he replaced with just a fuse only type to trip first (instead of the one in the consumer unit because it's only a fuse now that will keep tripping consumer unit if there is a external fault outside of the house) I had fault in my shed (one of the lights and it caused the RCD that was at the back door to trip but not the consumer trip so we never lost the sockets in the house)

Not the worst rod i have ever seen, the worst one only had about an inch of material that was in the ground, i could tell it was bad when i tapped it with my foot and it fell over ☠ive seen many rods made of steel tube, my advise if it looks like steel replace it before mother nature reclaims it

Tails would require RCD protection with it being a TT. Not just an isolator

wrong, double insulated tails are all that is required, but every single circuit in the DB will need to be an RCBO.

@@arcadia1701e The DNO fuse won't disconnect in the event of a fault on the tails due to the high ZE reading . A 100mA S type RCD would if the ZE is under 500 ohms

Suggestion - rub some battery terminal grease on the connection between earth rod and wire - should minimize corrosion. Love the use of cameraman by the way...

That looked to be a really poor type of connection for the main earthing conductor to the earth rod. YES, you ought to change that as a priority to provide a sound earth bond/connection. That home, needs a low OHM.😏

Was it a solid copper earth rod or a copper plated steel rod you used ? Copper plated ones would soon be as bad as the one you have replaced “ Luke & I “ 😂
