Tyler is very calm, quiet, and ultra-competent. His comment upon seeing the melted and fully severed wiring harness was classic - a soft-spoken "Geez". And then Tyler proceeds to fully repair the harness and the mini-excavator starts right up. You're very lucky that he's able to spend part of the summer helping on the road project.

Repair should have been started after the first fire. I can be calm, as well, but, big but, fix because sometimes the outcome is catastrophic. Best wishes from the far North, where people understand half measures might be fatal.

Hey, if the hitatchi is down for a hydraulic reason take the oil cooler out and have it tested by a company that retrofits cores to vechile radiators, they’ll be able to tell you what % is active. I’ve a funny feeling that corrosion is blocking 50 or 60% of your oil cooler giving you the short run times before overheating. Relatively easy and cheap thing to fix if it’s the cooler, and coolers tend to be very easy to get at for removal and refit so no biggie to get it out for testing.

When it comes to welding thick metal, if you grind yourself a small V grove, you can get a much deeper, stronger weld. If you just weld on the outside, the inside is still broken. Grind deep weld inside to outside in multiple passes. I hope that helps. Great videos!

I loved the rainy day scenes. A July rain is a real treat in North Idaho. It settled the dust, and it allowed the crews to get the Beetop fire under control. That fire is a long way from you two, but it is just up the valley from us. Fire is another good reason to build a wide excellent road like your doing. It provides good access for emergency vehicles, like you mentioned, and can be used as a fire line in an emergency. Fire protection is also a good reason to thin your trees and remove the underbrush. This was a fun installment in the road-building saga. Thanks!

No, as a pro, we would only have a small number of us as well. There is only so much space and need for equipment there. My brother and I do a lot of jobs together and for bigger stuff will have 2 more guys. We would rent newer equipment like the 330, so the dozer and second excavator would be reliable and our company owns a skidsteer, miniex, and backhoe. My brother is a master operator and can work much faster than these guys and faster than me, so he leads and we support with the other equipment. For homeowners and some used equipment, they are doing great. Over the last 5 to 10 years, I have learned to operate more equipment and have put a bunch of hours into operating. For people who already do construction work, it is really cool to learn how to utilize the heavy equipment and it quickly changes the size jobs one or a few people can handle. It is a game changer to use small machines vs. working by hand, then to get on the big equipment. A big challenge is that the equipment increases the costs and risks involved and bigger machines do it more so. Things can go much better with it, but the potential is there for mistakes, bad luck, and costs to also be a much bigger deal.

Great videos of a great adventure! Way to go! At 14:15 in to this video Reiley commented on water seeping up from the ground. It is very possible you may have a reliable source of good water there. Often the best water source in mountains is found by signs like water seeping from a slope. Water can sometimes be taped with as little as 20 feet of horizontal drilling into the side of a hill/mountain. I lived in the Sieria Nevada Mountains where many water systems are not conventional wells but springs tapped by horizontal boring. Drill the bore, build a spring box to collect the water, and plumb it to flow by gravity to a holding tank. Pumping this water to your home/shop can be done with an inexpensive low-head pump. Lots cheaper than deep well construction!
