I remember this was my first rap album that i followed the rollout on and listened the minute it dropped. Being able to listen without context beforehand was like watching a classic movie in real time. I remember tearing up in my bedroom. Personally have no experiences to directly relate to the story told but J Cole still hit me with his story telling ability. Love seeing other people discover this album within these 8 years since!!!!

One of Cole’s best. IMO this is Cole’s TPAB if we’re going comparisons I recall listening to this when it came out being amazed. I love watching these reactions of people who aren’t too familiar with rap to see that there is a lot more than drugs, money, and sex to be rapped about. I’d love to see some old school rap get reacted to. Particularly the giants of the 90’s Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie Smalls). My favorites by Tupac being Me Against The World and Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z… And then Biggie’s Ready To Die and his posthumous album Life After Death. Love the videos, keep em coming!

Oh let's fucking go. Came here expecting Take Care, I didn't think we'd get this so soon. Just have to mention, best editing in the reaction game. For real, damn near seamless, you get all the perfect moments. Love this album but the story/narrative aspect has always been a point of confusion for me. I've never seen anybody give a perfect explanation for which perspective J. Cole is speaking from in each track. At first I thought it was just sloppy storytelling, then I thought the perspective switched from James MacMillan Jr to J. Cole in the song "Change" which would just be perfect except for the song "She's Mine Pt. 2". J. Cole doesn't have a daughter, apparently. The idea that the first half of the album is from James Macmillan's perspective (loosely mirroring J. Cole's life and mentality) then switching to J. Cole after James dies at the end of "Change," with J. Cole carrying on and escaping the cycle (loosely mirroring the life James could have lived after finding love and a new hope) was just too perfect, I guess. There are no overt references to J. Cole's life/music until "Change", if I remember correctly. But James was apparently alive for the birth of his daughter in the final track. Now, though, I see it as a sort of blend of their perspectives. The uncertainty of which perspective is whose, except for when it's obvious, could mean that it represents both of them. "Change" could still represent a shift in the dominant perspective. One thing is for sure though, this album is J. Cole mirroring and merging himself with the story and life of "James Macmillan Jr." while deeply humanizing and exemplifying the common black man stuck in a cycle of violence and poverty. This album does not get enough love, and does not get the dissection it deserves, in my opinion. I think that's partially due to Cole's reputation of being "fake deep" as well as the comparisons to TPAB. Or it's just sloppy storytelling. Until Cole has a daughter. P.S. FNL next? Love and peace. Edit: Molly pointing out the two opposing voices at the end of Change was A1. Never put that together. Edit 2: Wrote this before I heard the final thoughts. Y'all are frfr insightful.

I remember first listening to this after coming back from college. I had a rough first year and had to come back home I went to college around the same time Cole did. I came from a very low income part of Chicago. Some days I didn’t have anything to eat. Had friends and elementary school people that were dying from gun violence or drugs. I played this album and cried. I almost felt like this album spoke to me in ways I needed to at that time. I made it out of all of that and had a future I just had to retake control. I remember listening to this in my room and ended up in tears at the end. I related to this album heavy and sonically it was a masterpiece. This album solidified Cole as one the greatest of all time and as much as I feel like a lot of people slept on this album. I also feel this album should have won him a Pulitzer.

Here’s how I’ve always understood the album track by track: FWTBT: Ominous and somber song to set the tone of the album Immortal: speaking from the blended perspective of both James and Jermaine about the narrowed opportunities for a black man in America and how dealing drugs is the only way to provide. Deja Vu: This is one of the hardest ones to decipher the story elements, but I believe it’s about the difficulty of deciding to chase your dreams or stay with your girl and accept that, which I think is a metaphor for the idea of chasing greatness and something more or being comfortable with adapting to a normal life. Ville Mentality: Pretty straightforward with the meaning here, being that it’s about escaping the small town/poverty and getting out of generational cycles of poverty. She’s Mine Pt 1: Intertwining the lives of James and Jermaine again with a song about falling in love and how it changes your life (next song being changes) and makes you accept everything that comes along with staying to fall in love. Changes: The turning point in the track list where James separates from Jermaine after he stays in the cycle with his lover and Jermaine leaves to end the cycle, later finding out about the death of James and the rest of the album imo Jermaine reflecting on what James left behind. Neighbors: No story elements just a single that was added onto the album to recognize the racism to every black man no matter their class, fame, etc, sort of like Jay-Z’s Story of O.J. Foldin clothes: Talks about appreciating the small things in life and how any gesture to help can mean something, and also about the facade that black men have to put on to survive the streets and gain respect. SMP2: Reflecting on James’ perceived greatest accomplishment in becoming a dad and the burden that he feels is put on him to be a present father because of stereotypes that make him question whether he can do it. 4YEO: The tumultuous ending that summarizes James life that shares many similarities to Jermaine's and gives the overall album concept of how James was another victim of the cycle and Jermaine had the same circumstances and happened to get out, leaving him with the survivor's guilt that made him write this album in honor of all the brothers that weren't as lucky, like Kendrick on Tpab, but less about the struggle of maintaining money for black men when they get to the top, and more about the cycle at the bottom of capitalism

I had to listen to this album about 3 times to put all the pieces together but and I was listening to this album on my drive to college and started to tear up as I came to the full realization of the story of his friend. In my opinion this is the best album J Cole has produced and even though this has alot of profanity I allowed my lil sis yo listen to this with me and i was explaining everything to her and she even started crying😅. But yh, I loved this album and loved that you guys reacted to it. And also sorry for kinda spoiling it for you Molly😂
