The problem with MLMs is that people sign up thinking they're going to make their living by selling the product, when actually, you make the money by recruiting and training other salespeople in your downline. It's a totally different skillset.
@chukuemekaoje1015
@chukuemekaoje1015 Жыл бұрын
@@ASimoneau That's also what makes it a pyramid scheme. You're recruiting salespeople below you, who then recruit other salespeople below them, who then recruit other salespeople people below them, and so on. Why? Cause the commissions are earned as a percentage of both your immediate downline, and a percentage of each downline below that. So the goal ends up being to build a big downline to maximize commission. As for sales, very little retail and the sales likely 1) sales to maintain rank and/or 2) to load up on "garage certified" inventory cause that's what your upline wanted.

What this woman wants to do is one of the worst things I have heard on this channel (and I've heard some doozies). My wife also wanted to get into an MLM (Mary Kay) when we were first married and had no money. I told her, politely, that the only way I would agree to it was if she ran the "business" with its own profits - in other words, she had to keep it separate from our regular budget and my paycheck (she was still in college). She agreed, did some stuff on the side, never really made much of anything, and eventually gave it up.

I was a “ride or die” for Dave before. But Dave’s silence about MLMs makes it look like he might be benefiting by being connected to some high up people who are in them. This is at least the second time we’ve seen Dave defend “some MLMs” instead of calling them out bluntly, like he does with credit cards, timeshares, and other systems that take advantage of people. How disappointing! What other lies has he made?!
@franziskani

He has a friend that owns a MLM, I forgot the name. - At least he mentioned that _some_ are like a cult. They are: they brainwash the associates to spend money. you are only one training away from making it. I disagree, the wife might not be motivated by greed. Just that she _can_ make it, be successful, have sales and a team and a nice car to show for. MLM's are very good in convincing their associates that it is _their_ fault, if they are not succeeding. They are too lazy, not disciplined enough, if only they would follow the recipe (which of course includes expensive courses and buying up and stocking whatever crap they sell. So they will meet monthly targets.

I would be willing to bet that MLM works for those who actually have sales skills. I believe that the MLM marketing tries to make a person believe they have sales skill w/o ever having tested that out before in their lives. If someone I knew wanted to go into MLM, I would advise them to buy a little of some other type of product and sell that product first before they consider MLM because the skill should be there before you make a huge financial commitment. If they say "What about college? Don't people make a huge financial commitment with education?" Okay, you got a point there but the smart move with education is to pay for education debt free because you don't know the future.

I never heard that either, thank goodness. But Dave said it was like 15 years ago and I've only been in it for 6 years. I bet I could ask around and see if anyone who has been in the company longer than that remembers anything about this. But yeah I never heard that and I do not have any connection to any leaders in Mary Kay who would recommend that. Our seminars with hotels and flights aren't even CLOSE to being $10,000, either. They put on a HUGE show for all of us and provide us with high-quality training and it's only a little over $200 for entry for 4 days. Hotel flights etc are all extra of course but you get a cheap flight, you split your hotel room, you can go to Mary Kay Seminar on a budget, probably like $1,000-1,500. I could not imagine going $10,000 into debt for training. Weekly meetings with directors are free to $5 a week. Calls with your director are free. Training videos are free. The local career conferences are $100 for a weekend plus one night in a hotel (that again you can split with people). There is no excuse for charging $10,000 for that stuff.

I’ve joined several MLMs over the years. Mainly for the discounts on products I wanted anyway. The only one I made decent money on was Tastefully Simple. And I actually made a LOT of money without any down line. However, I think these days the culture of the MLMs is really toxic.

Had a college acquaintance that got into some MLM garbage. He invited me over for a "bbq with a free informative presentation that will change your life". I went to humor him and out of curiosity. I knew it was a bad deal, I just wanted to hear the spiel. And what a pile of garbage. No hard figures, no details on how the program worked, nothing you could analyze anyway. But plenty of "picture yourself a year from now, living the dream, vacation home, etc., or stuck in your dead end job if you don't act now" BS. It was well crafted to draw in the suckers, I'll give them that. My buddy lost a few thousand before he wised up. But to his credit he did wise up and stopped throwing good money after bad.

I'd be out. They clearly have no money if they can only come up with $3k for this "investment"....and they're likely broke because of the wife's decisions making and 4 years of work for $0. If a partner says my way or the highway on something like this, i'm taking the highway every time. I work way too hard for a stupid wife to keep me broke.

It's kinda amazing to see DR and the time explicitly criticizing MLMs. DR's circles likely intersect with that of folks in MLMs, and he's given the most half-hearted of criticisms in the past. Edit: I spoke way too soon. I guess its a stretch to say they'll ever call out MLMs for the pyramid schemes they are/end up being.

@chukuemekaoje1015
@chukuemekaoje1015 Жыл бұрын
@@pep590the only difference between an mlm and a pyramid scheme is plausible deniability. MLMs can at least say they have a product/service to sell... but rarely do people doing MLMs actually sell that product outside their upline/downline. The name of the game in MLM is to continually build/replenish your downline (convert any customers to "team members")... hence, they're pyramid schemes.

I believe that if you want to do anything, START SMALL!!! Here is the thing about MLM (other than the recruiting aspect); they make the person assume they have sales skills. Do a trial run of selling something where you didn't buy that much product! The absolute worst way to start any business is with huge capital investments and debt. Assume the worst and start small. That way you FAIL SMALL!!!

There is a deeper issue in their marriage that’s not just the MLM… the my way or the highway is coming from other marriage issues… so the advice of a marriage counselor is a good one… healthy marriages don’t have this mindset
