I got tired of wasting WD40, spraying way too much, or forgetting to spray, etc, so I created this simple little device. It provides a little WD40 exactly where it needs to be in the right amount for cutter lubrication, and improved surface finish on Aluminum. You can mount this on any CNC make and model Home CNC machine, you just need to make the appropriate mount.
Does it help cutters last? Well I am still using the SAME 1/4inch 4 flute end mill that I bought for the machine back in Nov 2015.
I HIGHLY recommend that you ONLY use coated cutters.
Additional information can be located at the Carbide3D Community forum, just search for me OR WD40 Drip Can (e.g Sketch for the Shapeoko3 Mount, etc.)
As always, leave me a message if you have any questions.
List of Material:
1. A 3-oz can of WD40 Lowes SKU 569152
2. 3/16 or 1/8 Brass Pipe (about 4 inches) Lowes SKU 364224
3. 1/4 In OD X 1/8 In. MIP Valve. Lowes SKU 748440
4. Some lead/tin solder and flux
5. 1 Inch of 1/4 OD Copper Pipe (Ref Ice maker kit)
6. Some old small magnets
7. Some Hot Glue
8. Salt (table)
9. Masking tape
10. 6 inches of a metal coat hanger (OR 12 gage copper wire)

Richard, any ideas on how to direct the drips closer to the tip of the end mill? I cut a lot of flat sheet I'm finding I have to use a pretty high drip rate, and many of the drops don't dead on when the spindle is moving in certain directions. I'm not milling a small concentrated area where the WD40 gets a chance to pool up. The DeWalt spindle does blow the drop toward the cutter, but again only when the spindle jogs in certain directinos. I'm also getting some clogging at the tip of the brass tube. I'm cutting with a 1/16" cutter, so the chips are very small and tend to stick to the drop coming out as opposed to falling down. Any input would be appreciated!

What I do sometimes, is I'll move the tube to apply a drip slightly ahead of the cutter (and lower the tube to be closer to the metal if you are cutting thin plate). Granted, if you are cutting right to left apply the drip to right, and yes the drip will be behind the cutter when and if the machine is also cutting to the left, BUT there should be enough residue that the cutter is still lubricated. On average, I only set my drip rate to 15 seconds. Please use a coated cutter, because they need almost NO additional lube. Note: The Makita does not blow the oil nearly as much as the DeWalt. I hope this helps.

This set up works well for aluminum cutting? Most setups I see recommend having some type of pressure behind the liquid coolant to push away debris.

It works amazingly great for cutting Aluminum! I have over 11 months on ONE end mill (1/4" 4-Flute TiAlN Coated). If you are using a router (Mikita or DeWalt) the internal fan blows away the chips. I also started using it for cutting mild steel too, and it worked so well, that I stopped using my mist coolant system. I just started to design a new machine to sharpen Carbide End Mills and it is mostly made from steel parts, but with the WD40 system, I'm not worried about cutting steel anymore (And so much LESS messy than the Spray Mister).

Good to know. I'm hoping to picking up a Shapeoko 3 come tax time So I'll definitely keep this in mind.

Hi Richard. Nice video. Is the metal chips a problem? I have been holding on a bit with cutting aluminium on my cnc, worrying that the chips would cut and stick to/in the delrin v-wheels and overtime wear down the rail?

Good question! No problem at all, since I regularly clean my V-wheels (after each large metal job) with a small brass brush. Once in a while, a chip will be stuck and I pry it loose with a razor blade. I have been machining metal for over 2 years now and the machine is as good as the day I bought it. Note: I use 2 boards to cover my side rails (something you can see in my other metal cutting videos. This keeps 99% of the metal chips away from the v-wheels on the bottom on the Y (axis) rails.

What end mill do you mainly use for cutting aluminum? What type of coating do you recommend? Thanks for the tutorial!

Kris Harris after months of pleading, Carbide3D is finally stocking ZrN coated end mills. I prefer the 1/4" since you can't break it. Should last for years!
