My Worst ILS Approach Yet - KDAL IFR in Clouds Chasing Localizer with ATC Piper Arrow Complex Flight

Great trip, amazing FBO, brutal approach for me... You'll see in video there is a radio static which made me concerned about all my navigation (can I rely on my Nav1)... While cross checking GPS and even ForeFlight I drift off localizer and then do a horrible job re-establishing onto the localizer.
We kept it safe, stayed high and used the time we had to sort through and get re-established on the ILS again staying high once the radio static made me question our NAV radios.
Certainly learn a lot and aviation is humbling. This flight was always safe but we strive for perfection so when flying like I did on this approach it makes me sit back and really understand what I learned from the experience.
Thought about editing it out however, if someone can see and learn from my mistake and example here then that makes it worth it. Better everyday and be better tomorrow than you were yesterday will make us all better pilots.
Thanks for watching as always please do like subscribe and hit that bell if you like these videos!

As a private pilot working towards my instrument rating and having had a few simulated approaches get away from me at the end as you get closer to the localizer I can appreciate this and am glad you uploaded your video 'as is'. I looked at it as a real-world example of an application of the IFR skill set. Not to mention the added pressure of having kids in the back seats. Nice recovery and very nice radio work. That was a heavy workload, so thanks for sharing. See you in the sky!

Great job Devin. It takes a certain person to put their flying on KZfaq. It takes an even bigger person to put your mistakes on KZfaq. On the STAR into Winnipeg about 20-30 miles north from roughly 10,000-3,000 anytime the other pilot flying with me transmits to arrival, I hear a music radio station in my comms. It’s very distracting and took a bit at first to disregard it. Good job working through your distraction! Also shoutout to WestJet at 8:50 haha. You are too tough on yourself! Single pilot IFR is the real deal and without an autopilot, it can be a handful. I saw your comment on the use of the ISO button. If I am in the soup with passengers I always tell them I am going to isolate them. Between the “Are we there yet?” and your wife’s “I don’t like flying” comments, they all add to the stress of staying on top of the communications in a busy airspace. You did fine man!

This video was well done!. I start my IFR training shortly so I watched closely and appreciate your humbleness in not editing out your approach. Few questions... What mount for your full sized IPAD? My yoke mount sometimes shifts on the column (Mygoflight) Why the sunglasses once in IMC?. Did you always hand fly or rely on your autopilot? Random thought, loved your wife double checking the throttle cable!. Safety suggestion: Consider muting out the kids in the back during all critical phases of flight. Keep up the good work!

Hey Will! Thanks for watching. The wife and throttle cable was from a power off landing we had to do when one snapped in this plane before. Lol. Video is on here. I use a RAM mount for iPad and it’s great. Sunglasses in IMC when the sun is above the clouds was just really bright in the plane. And lastly - yes with kids get to know your isolate button for quick reach. This plane has crew which is front two seats and is a great feature for when kids are singing back there :) Thanks for watching and enjoy IFR training. Was my favorite part!

At least You were still established, and were high on the glide instead of low... ATCs concerns was that they were using both R and Lrunways. Closer you get, ore sensitive the ILS becomes.. Nice job! Especially with kids and a wife who doesn’t like to fly ! I’m putting in a TruTrak AP end of March to help with workload in hard IMC like that.

Nice video and great learning experience. I will pass on tips from things I noticed. First you are making too many throttle adjustments. Know your speed and set up early. My Mooney is 18 inch MP which is 100kts level with 10 degrees flaps. Hold that till one bar above glide slope intercept then drop gear. That will slow you down and start down glide slope without any power change or trim adjustments. Use slight rudder inputs to track localizer. When you break out, landing flaps and land. Less you touch, less that can throw you off you game. Flying with kids, isolate them on intercom during sterile cockpit time.

Thanks for sharing the real world in IFR flight...you did a nice job in that ILS recovery. It look like you kept the localizer within 2 dots or less though. Thanks again for the VID! :-). Don/NE Ohio

Really good vid. I'm just a VFR, but still, it's educational for all of us. That yelping on short final? It's caused by camping chairs tossed behind the rear seats of a Cherokee 140, and they bump the ELT. Ask me how I know, LOL. Chagrined I was, LOL... At any rate, great vid. I suspect that was power line static, especially if they were fairly close, and it was humid. AM radios after all... Jim

I had a T-Saratoga for many years....the next step up from the Arrow. If I may offer some comments from my instrument training and years in a similar airplane. I recommend you brief the approach; top/middle/bottom. First; confirm you are looking at the correct plate. As you read the LOC freq; enter it into the 430. Enter the approach freq in the 430. (When you contact approach, enter the tower freq in backup). For situational awareness; what direction are you coming from so you know which direction to be expecting to turn to final. Load the approach in the 430 for backup. Step through the fixes shown on the 430; compare to those on the plate. Obviously, this is more important for an LPV approach than ILS; but the process should be the same. Brief the missed approach plan. Upon missed, were you going to fly the GPS magenta line; use Nav 2 to fly to the published hold; vectors to another approach? Confirm Source (VLOC), Course (OBS 313), Frequency (111.5), Identify (morse code) BEFORE accepting the approach. While you don't have to tune the OBS to the final course, it's a good idea (you might as well get used to doing this as it's just a matter of time before you use an HSI). As soon as you're given a vector; you're done navigating the GPS course; change the "button of death" from GPS to VLOC. By the time you accept the approach clearance; all you have to do is intercept the localizer and configure the plane. With the retractable Pipers; my procedure is to slow to approach speed; add one notch of flaps (which is all you need for a precision approach). Do your landing checklist before crossing final. As you cross final; drop the gear. This will start you down the Glide Slope without a power setting change. All you should do coming down the GS is fly the ILS and maintain airspeed; one hand on the yoke; the other on the throttle. Do one last GUMP or Red/Blue/Green check on short final. Even after you break out; I'm not a fan of any configuration changes after crossing FAF (such as adding more flaps). As you transition into faster; more complex airplanes it becomes increasingly important to stay ahead of the airplane. Everybody has an opinion; I'm no different; just trying to offer some tips from what works for me.

Family Pilot I think the static noise you heard was electronic interference. I had it happen to me several times when someone leaves their cell phone on and when you get close enough to the ground, the cell tower re-establishes connection with the phone. As for the other noise, definitely ELT. We are allowed to test our ELTs within the first 5 minutes after the top of the hour. Maybe you can check the time stamp on your FlightAware or LiveATC to see if it matches up time wise.

We were fast. Kept speed up for spacing for too long. We were 140knots over ground heading to FAF. AP will be nice add on next plane :) haha. Our archer would float these arrows fly like filing cabinets lol

If you make it to KOLV (Memphis), look me up and you can try a flight out in my comanche. It has a lot more room and a great useful load. I fly my family of 4 around similar to you :)

@@FamilyPilot Happy to help. I like the PA24-260 because it has a useful load of 1200 lbs and has great range. With 90 gallons using 11.5gph at 167 knots, you can comfortably hit 1000nm. Thats 7 hours in the plane which may be a bit much for little ones. With 4 200lb adults, I can still fit 66 gallons of fuel. And on top of that, no one is cramped in the cabin. Anyway, come check it out anytime.

A GREAT TRICK is to monitor DTK and TRK on your GPS. Keep those two numbers the same and you localizer will remained nailed. You can see a 1 degree drift, which you won't see as readily on the LOC. It will also help you figure out a correction track to re-intercept. Good video, nice radio/comm work.

That’s a great suggestion John! I don’t have my instrument yet so I’m going to have to remember that one. A question though, will the GPS correct for winds on the approach?
@FamilyPilot
@FamilyPilot 4 жыл бұрын
DTK is the track over ground (regardless of wind) and tracking will show your current path of ground. So if DTK and TRK match you're wind corrected - whatever your compass/DG says is your correction :) Just make sure your GPS is programmed right with all waypoints you expect etc :) Enjoy the training, most rewarding ticket I got.

TAS / 60 = ... in your case ...2. That’s your nm/min. Divide the crosswind component by 2 and that’s your wind corrected heading. Can get winds aloft preflight or use ATIS as a guess worst case to calculate Crosswind component. Easiest way to prevent that is to fly a heading, not the needles. If your GPS takes a dump on you it’s nice to know...and makes approaches WAY easier. Set a pitch and power, hack a clock, set that heading and sit back and knock out a few crossword puzzles before landing ;) Also to fly that heading...use the bank indicator needle on your artificial horizon not your compass. Most under-utilized little tool on the 6-pack. Maintain 0 bank and she’ll stay stable for you. I’m sure you know this. The contributing factor was distraction like you said but I posted more for the viewers commenting to help others

I get that same noise when I set my iPhone down near my computer speakers. If the digital signal is strong enough, it will induce the noise into the copper wires in the speaker cable. It's one of the reasons commercial flights want electronic devices turned off when landing.

Yup. Sure would have. But ultimately decided to share it as a learning. We were ready for missed but had lots of room and altitude to recover the approach. Better tomorrow than I was today.... that’s the goal. Happy skies!

Im guessing he probably has an ELT, but it’s a 406 only. you won’t hear it with backup radio on 121.5 / 233 if it’s a 406 only elt. There’s several 406’s on the market, that only transmit 406.
