Six Flags Day Trip!
IFR departure, taking all the precautions we could on the ground to make this flight as safe as possible. The ceilings were low but tops were around 5k feet and only for the first 50 miles or so. We were ready with the instrument LANDING from the departure in our standby Navs and the approach was briefed.
Also using a backup AHRS incase we have vacuum issues on take off, with ForeFlight synthetic vision again all as backups if we needed them.
Was a great trip, and this is what getting instrument rating is all about. It is something to take very seriously but the freedom to fly got us there safe and had a GREAT Day at six flags!
And much appreciate the KZfaq subscribe button from this guy! Support his channel at • Video

Your copilot acts exactly like my wife. In my past 300 flights she has only sat in the front seat with me ONE TIME. She rationalizes that if I have a heart attack she would rather trust my (then) 12 year old than try and fly herself. Oh and she does not like to fly if we are in or above a layer, nor does she like to fly much above 3000’. Or when it’s too hot or too cold. Basically she just does not like to fly, ha ha. Thanks for the video!

Haha same boat my friend. Wife loves being somewhere or the destination but the getting there part not so much, especially after our forced power off a while ago she sticks to the enjoying the destination versus the inflight part lol. She gets nervous but deals with it so we can do our trips :)

Well done! Even flying a G6 Cirrus, I still plug in as much ground based nav aids as possible for backup for SIDs and approaches, and even while enroute sometimes. You just never know what might go out, and better to have it there as redundant backup than scrambling for it in the clouds! Thanks for the video!

Nice flight. One suggestion... at the busiest times such as the departure, that’s the time it’s most useful to use checklists to back up your memory items.

Great video! I like how you talk to yourself, out loud, with headings, airspeed etc. I do the same to keep my brain in the game even when I'm alone in the plane.

Great CRM. Never a bad idea to give a nervous passenger some simple tasks to give them something to focus on.

Great video. I had a lot of fun watching you hand fly real IMC. Awesome. The video reminded me of flying IFR to Delaware last summer. It was solid IMC for a good hour and ATC would not let me climb due to the busy NYC and Philadelphia airspace. My wife did not say a word until we broke out into good VFR. When she did speak she said “ well...that was nerve racking”. Good times. Thanks for the video. I’m looking forward to more.

This was very nicely done. I appreciate your planning and getting yourself organized and prepared. Although I'm not sure I would want to do this with my family, I respect that you do. It's good food for thought. I also really like the airplane. I think the Arrow is really underrated. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.

Hey thanks for watching and your feedback. In general we’re comfortable flying ok trips as a family. Less often (rarely) we make IFR departures like this. This decision was carefully made as I really respect IFR flying and it’s dangers. This was our home airport and destination was clear. Weather was broken north side of field and we had the approach not only briefed but tuned and again home field so knew it well. Was a careful decision and not one we made lightly and truly do appreciate the feedback! :) happy skies

I learned that “gear up” should only be done in GA aircraft when there is no usable runway left. You never know when you’ll need that gear in an emergency situation. From what I understand, “positive rate, gear up” is meant for airliners.

As I watched this it occurred to me just how far we’ve come since my early flying days. From steam gauges and paper to GPS and ipads for navigation. I flew with paper like a champ in my 20s but I don’t won’t to go back to that!
@FamilyPilot
@FamilyPilot 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed - the awareness we have and information now a days. I was just talking about pre GPS flying and think about weather information! There was a story a while ago down here in Texas covering US Postal airmail folks and these red arrow painted on ground with fires lit for navigation... made me appreciate all we have today (said the guy still flying steam gauges so another step yet to come)

Nice use of GA and the Instrument rating. Your wife seemed a little apprehensive. When I'm flying (PIC) they don't bother me. As a passenger they aren't my favorite thing lol

Love our GA adventures and the instrument rating is such an enabler. But needs a strong respect for it and it’s dangers. That said it gives the most amazing views! Thanks for watching!

truly unique. And what a great co-pilot...calling out 4.9” suction when you said 5 or better doesn’t get any better. Mel short for Melanie perhaps? That’s my wife’s name...but she doesn’t let me call her that.

Thanks for the Video. The wife and I enjoy them. We are going to be in the market for an 77/78 Arrow 3 turbo in the next year so I really enjoy watching you fly the family in one. May i ask, what size IPAD is that and what kind mount are you using? It looks like a nice fit for rhe yoke. Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us! Keep the blue side up brother!
@FamilyPilot
@FamilyPilot 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks chuck and misses chuck! I’m using the bigger iPad and I would say it’s too big for that plane. Reason being is it blocks my panel for fuel flow MP and cyl temps. When flying in VMC conditions I don’t usually even mount it just have it for reference on my knee board. I’m using a Ram yoke clamp which I’m happy with and I can change the plate that adapts so I can change size iPad without issue. Thank you so much for watching! - the Millers

Fort Worth GA pilot here. Was wondering how you guys get around. Uber, rental, or curtesy car? My wife rides an electric scooter and I have an electric longboard we take on every trip. She absolutely loves the scooter rides when the weather is nice. Went to Nacogdoches last weekend and rode their paved trails all through the forest and gardens. That would make for some great film footage!
@FamilyPilot
@FamilyPilot 4 жыл бұрын
Love that idea! We travel with the kids mostly so when we land we will either grab a crew car, rental car or Uber depending on where we are, how much moving around we will be doing :) Our kids rock on power scooters and would be awesome way to get around!!

Why do owners of old (and probably really expensive) aircrafts always have the yokes all worn out and why don't they repaint them? Is there a reason behind this? Thank you!
