Subcontinental pitches were doctored to hell in those days. 5 Tests, when he was under the weather, were nothing to go on. Lillee only went to WI for a Test series once, in 1973 and that's where he broke down and was out for 18 months. People do forget how quick he was before his injury, but he was timed at 155 after it - slower than Thommo, faster than everyone else.

@@raheelakhtar7 No they were doctored. They were renowned for it. It's not as though it's just my opinion. It favoured their batsmen. Certainly extraordinary batsmen like Gavaskar and Abbas were exceptions, and succeeded everywhere. Most others' stats were boosted on Subcontinental pitches and they were soon found out.

Hadlee said he would not have been nearly so good without learning from Lillee. I believe Hadlee took what Lillee showed and used this input not just as an obvious model but as a meta-example advanced the craft of fast bowling a great deal. I'd go so far as to say Hadlee is a bit like Kareem Abdul Jabbar, he learned from people before, and then created a level of skill and technique that hasn't been achieved, employed or emulated since.

DK is still one of the all time greatest fast bowlers IMHO. He could do anything with the ball, got the wickets of the oppositions best players and bowled long spells when needed. An absolute champion. If you add the RotW figures (4 tests, 24 wickets at 20) and the Packer supertests (14 supertests, 67 at 26) wickets at to his proper test figures he looks even better.

@@danishmuhammad7389 and that's a reasonable view, but some of his greatest performances were on unfriendly surfaces, like the perennially flat track at Adelaide (9 tests, 45 wickets at 26) or the dog pile that was the MCG in the 70's and 80's (14 tests, 82 wickets at 21) or even the traditionally spin friendly SCG (8 tests, 43 wickets at 24). He also bowled well in the West Indies during WSC (5 tests, 23 wickets at 28) in a series with three draws. Yes he did well in helpful conditions, but he was also good in unhelpful conditions too.

Dennis hardly played in the subcontinent and Windies - according to stats he played three tests in Pakistan and a total of 100 overs (and that too with some health issues - dysentry) and took three wickets. And he played one test in W'indies and bowled thirty overs taking no wickets. His average of 90 in these conditions is directly due to the fact that he hardly played there (his total bowling numbers there is 130 overs and three wickets which is not great but not terrible either). Had he played twenty test matches or more in these conditions and still averaged 90 then your point is valid. But given the small sample size you can't really comment on a player of his stature. If you really want to look at a player who was bang average and a home track bully then look at Virender Sehwag's overseas average - his average in South Africa is 25; his average in New Zealand is 20; his average in England is 27. A combined total of 19 Tests in these three countries (where he scored only one century and one half-century) and yet there are people who think he was a world class opener. The man couldn't handle the moving ball cause his feet hardly moved.

Can you please step outside and apologise to the trees surrounding your home. They are busting a gut providing the oxygen that you are currently stealing.

In that series against Pakistan the 1st test was a dust bowl, Sarfraz Nawaz took 0 wickets and the spinners on both sides took virtually all the wickets. The next 2 pitches were roads designed to result in draws which they did. The top 3 bowlers in that series were spinners. stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?id=228;type=series

@@analcommando1124 Subcontinental pitches were doctored to hell in those days. 5 Tests, when he was under the weather, wee nothing to go on. Lillee only went to WI for a test series once, in 1973 and that's where he broke down and was out for 18 months. People do forget how quick he was before his injury, but he was timed at 155 after it - slower than Thommo, faster than everyone else.
