Andy and Dandan Fisher - Steam Around the World

Myanmar has an extensive metre gauge railway network, these days, entirely diesel operated. However, the railway has kept a stock of steam locomotives, although only a handful are steamable. This selection shows our first day in the country with a reproduction sugar cane train being hauled by 2-8-2 number YD967 on a branch out of Pyinmana.
Recorded in December 2018.

Es siempre el mismo, tren, los mismos carrito, y siempre sin mercancía, mas o menos nomas el negocio. Podrían sacarle provecho, usándo esa linda maquina para tirar carros, adaptados para turistas, seria grito y plata, fomenten el turismo. Gana, el tren y las localidades que vicitan, los turistas. Neat. Myanmar was among the last places to see any actual working revenue steam. At least the tourist popularity has kept some steam running. I think Sandaoling Coal Mine in Xinjiang China is the last place in the world with any actual revenue steam. Even that is only a matter of time. If this is the same operation I was reading an article about, it seems that they are in financial trouble and may not be able to operate all that much longer.

You're just about right about Sandaoling. There is a single Garratt working at Hwange Colliery in Zimbabwe on a regular basis still but that's all. I'm not sure which operation you refer to in your last sentence. If it's Myanmar, they'll continue to do steam charters as long as people pay for them and if it's Sandaoling, the steam there is expected to last until September 2020 with a possibility it could continue to 2022. This is the article I was reading from the Myanmar times. www.mmtimes.com/lifestyle/travel/18306-steam-train-service-nears-end-of-line.html I'm not sure this refers to the same as you just filmed. At this point I dread having any surviving steam die off. Maybe I'm too idealistic in wanting everything still around preserved. In New York where I'm from the state seems to be at a state of war at tourist railroads. They are trying to get rid of railroads so they can build recreational trails.

I know up to a few years ago there were some Fireless steam locomotives working different industrial sites and plantations. I don't know how many of them are left in service at this point.

@@AndyDandanFisherSteam no not in Myanmar I was thinking of a few I've seen videos of in Europe and Eastern Europe at some industrial plants. Where they used the excess steam to power them. The plantation I was thinking of was in Java I think. I don't know how many of these are still working any.

What happened to the small caboose-like car that was on the end of the train in the beginning? They sure don't worry about weeds growing in the tracks there, do they? Amazing. What do you mean by "reproduction" sugar cane train? Was this some kind of railfan trip or a revenue run?

The small 4 wheeler had bearing problems and had to be replaced half way through the day. This was a reproduction of a past train format put together specially for us. Regular steam finished in Myanmar some years ago. And, yes, you're right .... weeding isn't their number one priority!! Andy
