@early1900s 6mm boards are too thin. Basswood is the best wood to begin with. It is not the same as balsa. I supply clear basswood boards, 3/8 x 5 x 12 that are perfect for chip carving. Go to MyChipCarving and click on the Store tab. Then open the Practice Boards section to order. Fast shipping. Keep in touch! Marty

Very impressive! I would definitely like to give it a try. Quick question: what kind of wood is used? Keep up the great work I’ll check out your website to see what the cost of materials are.

Can you do chip carving on oak? This would look nice for accents on cabinetry.
@MyChipCarving4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can chip carve on oak and other hard woods but not with a knife like I show in this video. You'd need to use a chisel and mallet to make the cuts.

Hello Jodi, Starting with the proper knives, well sharpened is crucial in chip carving. It does make a difference which knife you start with. I designed the My Chip Carving Knives with carvers from beginners to advanced in mind. They come pre-sharpened and have a lifetime warranty. You won't be disappointed with these knives. Go to My Chip Carving dot com and open the "Store" tab on the left. You'll find the My Chip Carving Knives there. Email or call if you have any questions. 866-444-6996

My grandpa recently passed away and left an unfinished box that he was working on (material is cherry) I would like to learn enough to be able to finish the box, but the tools he was using are different (I'll be getting the mallet and chisel he used, which apparently belonged to his dad before him. My vision is pretty bad (20/200) so I was wondering if this was something that can be done by feel, and was hoping you could give me some advice on how to go about learning enough to finish the project.

Hello and my condolences on the passing of your grandpa. The best help I can offer you is to visit my friend on KZfaq and IG, Sergio Monteiro de Castro. Watch his technique and copy his method to finish your box. Most importantly you will need to have scary sharp chisels. See my Video "dangerously dull to scary sharp".

It sucks that hand carving has now been replaced by cnc machines. 😔

Right. But was we continue to practice and teach others how to chip carve we will preserve this rich tradition and keep the craft alive!!
