Congratulations! The possibilities of this machine is quite remarkable, and I am so glad for you. The default profile is the same as most espresso machine and they're great as a starting point. I bought an XL thinking that I could 'just' make a good coffee for me. Learning to dial in, via dose, yield, time and weight. After 200++ shots on mine, I came to realize that this machine actually helped me understand so much about.. coffee itself. The coffee region, roast level and also the importance of grind setting, relation of pressure and flow rate to the cup quality. For example, on a medium roast beans, I can count on a 1.5ml-2ml preinfusion stage, and a 2.5ml ish extraction stage will yield me a great tasting espresso, in which I could probably not know had I stuck myself with my Flair Pro 2. The future is also very exciting. People can make their own profile, in one instance i saw someone making what's akin to a "quality control profile". If you grind too coarse, the profile would realize by detecting a higher flow rate in the pre-infusion stage and compensates by lowering pressure (e.g 6-7 bars) to rescue the cup from becoming undrinkable. If the grind setting is too fine, the profile allows for a higher flow rate to compensate. I absolutely agree that this is a great learning machine! Please explore its versatility. And also get a bluetooth scale so you can stop automatically on weight. The decent scale is very well priced, while felicita arc and acaia lunars are known to perform well with the machine with interesting price points.

Very nice machine...I was about to pull the trigger at 1st but I took into consideration some things (at least for me) like Serviceability, Ease of use, Upgradability, Customization. Finally I settled for the Profitec Pro 500 PID as it is E61, less expensive, great temperature stability, flow control, Wood finish (at a future date). But this is a very nice machine...

Very neat purchase, but for 4.5k and up I would have been pretty annoyed to have any DOA parts. 🙁 The experiment where you looked to see how its default profile operated had me thinking "he"s going to just have to position his head under the spout and start chugging, that's never going to stop..." It's interesting to hear the Flair 58 has led you to getting the Decent! I thought long and hard about buying a Decent a year ago, but in the end I couldn't justify the cost and have lately been thinking about something like the Flair 58 or the Cafelat Robot as a way to give me a lot of control (and with the added benefit of likely never needing maintenance). I'll be curious to watch the experiments you share on the channel!

I have a decent and it’s the best machine for the home. It doesn’t know your recipe. You have to tell it how much and when. The pressure profile is set by the app but doesn’t know how much is in the portafilter or how much you want at the end of your shot. Of course there is the variable of the grinder.I love mine!

Congrats on getting a Decent! It’s my dream machine, but way more than I would consider spending on coffee gear. I believe that Decent is truly driving espresso forward with their software and hardware innovation. The software -driven approach is for sure the future. I’m now doing a little DYI project, putting a microcontroller in my Silvia. My aim is to get temperature and pressure control, plus gravimetric dosing.

Suction cup feet is a good idea for a machine that is not heavy enough to not dance on the countertop. Have seen this happen with many inexpensive home machines. Porcelain tank and tray good idea adds weight and wont rust. The Decent costs less than a Linea Mini and does much more in terms of flow/pressure stuff.

I’m 27, i get into speciality coffee maybe 2 years ago, beginning with pour overs, and i get a Flair 58 on June this year, few months after i bought a X54, i feel so glad to having this. And i feel lucky too cause I’m 27, the flair 58 was announced at the exact same time i was looking to buy the flair pro 2, and i feel so lucky, especially thinking that what my parents or grandparents could have at the same age as mine. For now my budget is not matching that kind of machine but it is a real goal for me, since the day I’ve seen some review of the Decent Machines, i felt in love and felt the same way they announced the flair 58 for the first time. I might get it in few years maybe 5, and in 5 years, at the time where the coffee industry gives more and more innovations , i am really wondering what would be my purchased.

I started with a flair and decided to upgrade to a decent espresso machine as well. I’m new to the espresso game and really wanted to learn how to pull a ‘decent’ (pun intended). The only logical way to achieve this, it appeared, was with the information provided by this machine. I’m wondering why you did not use a scale when you pulled that first shot and how the shot tasted? I’m looking forward to following you on this channel to see future videos using the decent machine. I feel this is going to be an interesting journey. Thanks for the video.

If you have a tablet or even from your phone, you can load the decent app into your tablet/phone and start pulling shots from there. Check the decent diaspora for links on how to download and install the app. Hopefully that you have a spare android tablet/phone that is and not apple. The default profile is probably a 9-bar with declining pressure, but because you don't have a scale, I think the machine don't know when to stop. But since you are working blind, you could just put the cup on a scale and stop the brew accordingly to the weight you want

I've got S/N #003 of the Decent, and it has been going strong for 3+ years. Endless possibilities for experimentation and there are a lot of things I haven't tested or explored yet. One of the most interesting question I have is around temperature profiling - that is adjusting shot temp throughout a pull. I've yet to really toy with this in any great way, but I do wonder if ramping up or down the temp throughout a pull makes a noticeable difference.

Congrats! The Decent is my end game machine. It's truly the antithesis of the past direction of espresso: bigger, more boilers, shinier. All that is great for high volume cafes that need to pull the exact same shot time and again, but get in the way for home users that want to pull 3 different kinds of shots at odd times of the day. I'll be watching your upcoming videos, jealously and working out where a Decent would fit in my small kitchen :) On simultaneous brew and steam, also something that always struck me as odd for home users. Makes complete sense for a cafe to get drinks out quick, but for a home machine with flow control, you'd need three hands to pressure profile and steam simultaneously

My only mod is using the ECM portafilter from my Classica machine. I prefer its looks to the wooden handle on the Decent and also removed the group head handle as it's not necessary whatsoever. Not a fan of those wooden handles from Decent as I consider them ugly. My one and only complaint regarding Decent gear. Machine is now 14 months old and I've never had it so good. Lovely machine! Just started playing around with the adaptive profile and got a new tablet sent because of battery swelling. I've decided to unplug the tab from time to time to allow battery to get used properly. Not good for lithium battery to stay at 100% at all times. Tab should have better battery management software. I can go from complete shutoff on the Decent to extracting to the cup quicker than regular warmup on my ECM machine. IMO, any coffee reviewer must have a Decent machine. To not makes them dated and irrelevant. Your tab being DOA is awful!!! Should never, ever, ever happen!

biggest concern with the Decent: are you afraid of obsolescence? given the company is relatively small with a super niche audience and current global supply-chain issues example, I'd have no fear of buying a $10K LaMarzocco machine and being able to have it repaired or fixed in 5-10 years from now, but can't say the same with the Decent
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 2 жыл бұрын
Personally, no I'm not. With the size of the community already built around the product, even if the company were to go somewhere I think there are enough third party contributors / developers to keep everything running / updating

They are handling the supply issues pretty damn well so far - some great decisions on John’s end. The expected upkeep of a Linea Mini or GS3 is way higher than on a Decent. LaMarzoccos home machines are known to have serious reliability issues and parts are expensive. I love them for their external build, design, heritage but if you drink light roasts, they can’t keep up with the Decent in the cup. I owned those LM machines and moved to the DE1XXL now - let’s see how that goes 🥳
@deenman60
@deenman60 2 жыл бұрын
right now if a LM breaks or a Decent you will get your decent fixed way before your more expesive LM or other old brands. They are on the market since 2017 so it's already ~5 years almost. They dont plan to go anywhere, they are selling well and doing great, in commercial too, where the machines are stressed way more than your average 2-6 shots a day at home.

Flair 58 is very good, you just don’t have the same options for temp control or odd ratios (like turbo shots). They really aren’t comparable honestly, but that doesn’t take away from the flair. When you use the manual controls without a functioning /turned on tablet, you’re just using manual controls. So the user starts and ends the shot

Sounds during brewing / steaming are certainly one thing. But curious to know what you mean by "general feel"? The machine is entirely metal, wood, and ceramic, very well built.

@@LifestyleLab_ I am an iOS developer. So programming all day and Decent with the tablet and graphs and all that - it gives me the same vibe. It’s super subjective thing but I love the fine tunning the shot by feel, makes for a different experience in a day. Knobs, levers, all that jazz.

Question for everyone: Do someone see Decent coming with a commercial machine in the future ?

No, they're big advocates of simply using multiple single group machines

@@LifestyleLab_ The single boiler won’t be an issue ? You said it is quite fast but enough to handle a commercial use ? By the way i know one barista having a Cafe Racer 2g and a Decent XXL on the side for special coffee pair with a Ditting grinder.
@LifestyleLab_
@LifestyleLab_ 2 жыл бұрын
The XXL can run of 220V and have REALLY great steam power. With multiple units you could steam on one while brewing on the other and vice-versa

I am testing the Decent for a friend of mine. For any reason, he disconnected it for a certain period of time. Result, the tablet died itself, as yours. It is only 2 months old! Sounds for me the tablet brand Decent is using is shit and cheap quality, not to say crap. I was frustrated, as you should have been, to not know the latest setup recorded in it. So by the time I will receive the replacement tablet, this high technology machine is useless. Otherwise, a lot of fun in perspective, with a usable tablet. So, keep in mind, the tablet shall always be charged, unless it will die!! Weird isn’t it?

if you are letting a battery go under a certain level, you wont be able to charge it back up. These things are not ment to sit for months w/o charge. If your car battery goes under a certain voltage for sitting for 1 year, you wont be able to charge it back. Simple as that.

@@deenman60 Get you. I own 2 cameras and PlayStation remote disconnected over 2 years and still powering up, even keeping charge for a reasonable time. They are not dead. Do you consider a brand new tablet disconnected for 2 month old then dead, a high quality product? Sorry but I don’t.

Nope! I chat about that in the steaming section of the video. It's technically a zero boiler because it uses thermocoils

Any water tank you can fill from the front of the machine is a win in my books! But I was definitely expecting the drip tray to be a bit more secure, especially given it's breakable nature

Really cringey, the fit of the water tray, the grill on top of it, the dead on arrival tablet (this is a common thing) or people need to find a powerful charger that has 2.5 Amps or more to charge it for a few hours, and other little stuff. I'm amazed you did not struggle with the on/off front button that needs to come out for the machine to circle on.
