I'm uruguayan and I honestly have to say that Australia deserved that qualification, a great generation of players that can never be equalize in terms of quality.

But that Uruguay side also was a golden generation of others eg Recoba and so many other stars. Uruguay was awesome 2000-2010…

@@Steve5066326 year old Diego Forlán missed those games due to an injury, he was the top scorer in the spanish league that season.

Simon Hill is an excellent football commentator. I was at the Australia V Uruguay game at the Olympic Stadium on 16th November 2005, what a game!!, what atmosphere!

And then came the amazing call vs Japan - "Aloisi...Cahill...CAAAHIIIIILL! Tim Cahill has done it again! what a goal by Tim Cahill! 2-1 Australia! Ohhh its a wonderful moment in Kaiserslautern!" 🇦🇺😁

“Oh it’s a wonderful moment in Kaiserslautern!” is my favourite commentary call in all of sport 😍

This was fantastic, I’ve rewatched the full match a bunch of times. I always love listening to Craig’s nervousness. Listen to the start of the shootout, he literally tells people if they are religious to start praying. So good

This is great. The passion from Foz and Simon is what makes this call so iconic, despite them correctly admitting it wasn’t overly professional behaviour 😂 They were just a couple of fans going as mental as everyone else was in Australia at that moment. Probably just fractionally behind Cathy Freeman’s gold at Sydney as the most iconic Aussie sporting moment we’ve had, so the ridiculousness was justified.

Hope these two are involved in the A-League when new TV deal kicks in. Would be massive step up on the dross fox sports serve up currently.

I couldn’t speak for three days after watching this because I remember the game against Iran, and then Uruguay the first time in 2001 when we were up one nil up from the first leg and didn’t qualify for 2002 and then this in 2005 I was so excited I just roared at the TV I was so happy 😁

Fabulous insight to this iconic call. I've listened to that penalty shootout commentary so many times I can almost recite it. Like a poem.

I understand that you are both professionals in your field of commentary, and are therefore essentially critical of your own work. The call you made was absolutely a perfect representation of what we were all feeling that night! Thank you both so much!!!

I was at the game and much like Foz, it was hard to watch the penalties. I remember involuntarily shutting my eyes when Aloisi stepped up. I felt the goal go in though. If reverberated through the crowd behind the goals. And I love, love, LOVE watching the game and hearing the juxtaposition between Simon trying to be relatively professional while Foz just lost his mind along with the rest of us.

All I remember was among all the yelling and celebrations. Foster yelled out “John my son!” 😂. Cracked us up laughing at the time.

I am Uruguayan, as a child I slept with the soccer ball in my bed every day, it was the only thing I did. I remember my father called me to watch the game and we lost on penalties! But far from hating Australia, every time I played playstation i chose australia by Viduka, Bresciano, kewel, and when it was my turn to take a match in the neighborhood playing with friends it was always Schwarzzer 😆

But its sad the state of football Australia since that world cup in 06. Been downhill ever since meanwhile Uruguay went on to a semi final in 2010. Eliminated both England and Italy in 2014 WC and eliminated Portugal in 2018. So who is laughing now? When will Australia pick up again,,,,,,...
