I had to chuckle as you mentioned how you and your schoolmates drove the teachers mad with your watches playing tunes like "The Yellow Rose of Texas!" I can well remember our headmaster staring daggers at us during assembly, when someone's watch started playing that song or "Green Sleeves."

Good yellow Sunshine dahlias. I have been I a factory where they painted engraving. Method :using acrylic paint paint over the engraving as you did. Wipe over with a paper hand towel Repeat with a clean hand towel. Leave to dry. Yes I was surprised and asked if they could not get a machine to do it. The boss replied that they had tried but a human made the best job. What a mind numbing boring job. Well done for persisting with the watch repair.

My first digital watch was a Nelsonic that played "La Cucaracha" for its alarm. :) My parents were happy when the battery died. Looks like a regular ceramic PCB. The traces are probably silver, with a gold plating on the outside layers. You can still order ceramic PCBs today, but it is quit expensive and niche. Don't know why they would use ceramics over regular PCBs back then, maybe they couldn't get the right thickness/layer count?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this explanation. I had assumed they used ceramic because the other type of boards had not been created yet for watches. I could be totally wrong as early electronics I know nothing about. Problem with ceramic is its too fragile.
@bablaghosh5476
@bablaghosh5476 Жыл бұрын
Ceramic PCBs are really very expensive and those PCBs are only used for the accuracy. Ceramic PCBs have low capacitance value ( almost nil ) and they are weather proof as well, that's why the accuracy of the watch isn't affected by the temperature or humidity. Only drawback is that those PCBs are very brittle. If the watch drops, the PCB can break easily. Very nice video indeed, watching you from (KOLKATA) INDIA.......

Great save Mike! I also have a few classics in storage just waiting for the right donor and know how satisfying it is when a longterm project comes together! I would’ve used the LCD screen from the blue Casiotron since the printed graphics are not faded, especially noticeable in the red printing for Sunday. I noticed the LCD display seems a bit faint too so there’s a chance that the display might improve using the LCD screen from the blue Casio. Entertaining video! Keep up the good work mate!
@MyRetroWatches

They are know to be a bit faint on these and a polariser filter in front of it would fix it. I contemplated changing screens over but as it’s so hard to find a module the less handling the better as had it then not worked for any reason I would have been gutted and another £45 down

Great video as usual. Very interesting watch a Casio in a Tissot case. I just completed the service/ repair of a 1977 Seiko Bell-Matic. Has to be the most complicated watch I’ve done so far. I have yet to tackle a chronograph. But this watch has 2 main springs, 1 for the movement and one for the alarm. The inner bezel turns to whatever 12 hour alarm you want it has a little plunger to turn it off and on. I never knew such a watch existed until I found this one.

I have a small collection/hoard of very early Swiss quartz analogue. Things like Girard Perregaux' first quartz watches(and the movement that made 32Khz the standard), Omegas first inhouse movement, even a NOS Longines Ultra-Quartz(the single maddest watch movement ever. Look it up Sir. If you dare. I suggest some whiskey beforehand😄). My worry has always been movements giving up the ghost, so when I was collecting them years ago, before prices went up(I'm a cheapskate) I also tried to source a spare working watch and stick it in an ani static bag for the future. I have looked more recently and prices have gone up while supply has gone right down. It was a fascinating time and should be presreved and enjoyed like your Tissot. The only digital I have was my dad's first series Seiko calculator watch. The display is very washed out though so you've inspired me to go looking. 👍🙂 PS. In my humble it wasn't a "Quartz crisis" that nearly killed the Swiss, but watches like your Tissot. It was a Digital crisis. The Swiss had heavily invested in quartz and they were selling well, but only analogue. They completely missed the digital coming. First from America and then the Far East. Suddenly analogue watches mechanical or quartz looked "old fashioned". The Swiss tried to catch up,(even very slow to innovate Rolex prototyped an LED,) but they were too expensive and at least a year behond the Asian guys in features.

Nice video, always good to see proper watchmakers working on the totally legitimate category of LCD watches. I loved your Sicura video too, amazing watch! Today watching this inspired me to wear my Le Gant metal case LCD, a rebranded Seiko, has a Y709 4039 movement (I should say module, of course). There is a type of watch, you might be toatally aware of it (?), called a Big Tic, made by companies subzero and Fossil, has inside a mechanical quartz for the hours and minutes and a module for the giant LCD seconds.

@@MyRetroWatches That which I wrote probably does look like a spelling mistake! But the name is actually Big Tic, if you want to locate one somewhere. You are definately a talented watchmaker, the work you put into them, and the problem solving, e.g. a tiny component with a tiny defect etc. I look forward to seeing the jump hour video. Myself, I've got a Buler Super Nova with the upper case surface removed, due to plating damage, now has the brass uncovered and patinated.

That Cassio is fabricated on a ceramic printed circuit board. You are probably used to pictures of computer boards made of green fiberglass laminate and silver or gold or copper colored traces. This is the same concept, but using different materials. Each of those black lines is functionally a wire. We call them "traces". They typically go from a connection of one part to a connection of another part, if they can reach it easily. Sometimes there is another trace or something else in the way, so the trace needs to "jump over" the obstruction. This is usually done by moving the trace to the other side of the board. This is done with a "via", which is a metallic connection thru the board. Those traces that end in a tiny round mark are going to a via, which is where the round spot is. If you check very carefully you will probably find in many cases that there is another blob at exactly the same place on the other side of the substrate. I don't know, but I suspect that those traces may be silver. You obviously can solder to silver under the right conditions, since you can see a lot of soldered parts connecting to traces. You can also plate them with other metals, like gold for instance. I suspect the battery compartment might be gold plated to help survive corrosion to some limited extent.

The traces on the ceramic substrate are a kind of conductive ink that is printed onto the ceramic. It is fired to some extent to remove the carrier material and leave just a conductive line on the ceramic. As a conductive material, silver, nickel and possibly some carbon are likely materials for the traces. If it contains silver, it is in combination with some other metal, as it has not tarnished. Some areas of this material were then selectively gold plated to make better contact with the contact spring and minimize the damage that a little battery leakage might cause. A tip to cleaning up battery leakage: Start with water, as the electrolyte in the batteries uses water as a solvent.

I know this may sound a little out of context, as to what I’d like 👍 to see ya ✌️ collect, in addition to your watches, but ya should add a TV 📺 watch (or a few) to your watch collection. This TV 📺 watch was a 1970’s technology device, and ya could watch TV 📺, right on your wrist. These did consist of a somewhat bulky receiver, but it fit in a shirt 👕 pocket quite well. I’m sure there was a couple of wires that ya connect to the receiver, and then to the watch, but these were all the rage 😤 back in the 1970’s. I think these TV 📺 watches were in color. They came in a few different brand names, but they were like 👍 having 2022 in 1978. At least, I did not find the receivers on these too bulky. More like 👍 a “compact”, or “neat” type of “bulky”, as to speak 🗣. Even for the 1970’s (inflation was so much less then), I would not be surprised 😯 if these TV 📺 watches went for $600.00, retail. They’re probably that, on today’s inflation calculator, as vintage. Yes, a long comment. I know I don’t have to apologize for it being so long. Enjoy 😉, and comment me back on your opinion on TV 📺 watches. Happy Halloween 🎃 👻. Your friend, Jeff.

The electrical path through the board is probably done by drilling a hole and plating it. That's how it's done these days on fiberglass FR-4 boards.

I enjoyed watching the care you put into this watch. I'm trying to repair a Casio analogue watch, but the stem had broken off in the crown and has defied any attempt at removal. Alum, or what was sold to me as alum, hasn't worked so I'm stuck....
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches Жыл бұрын
Alum only works on soft steels. Your stem is most likely stainless which alum has no effect on. I would measure the stem . For instance if it measures 0.9 then (for cousins Uk) this means it’s a tap 9 so you can then buy a generic crown at tap 9 and it will fit. Finding a new stem should not be that hard for a casio I’d think.

@@MyRetroWatches Surprisingly it has been; I've yet to find a crown that fits the crown guard, tube and, strangely, the stem thread

:) Found out on my digital clock how to have it display normal time, and no am/pm, so it is possible, on my watch, look for the "h" setting.

Amazing but I would have swapped LCD assembly from the Tissot to the Casio module to keep it true to the original. I LOVE your vintage Casio collection.

I don’t need to , if you look at the original eBay photos I shown it has the exact same screen. In my messing around with them it ended up with the screen with the black line which actually came in on the other Casiotron and not the Tissot.

Very nice video. One question. Although the module is identical, the screens arent exactly the same. The number of letters for the day of the week, as well as the numbered bar, are different. Is the exchange possible?

The stamp inside the Casio "51-7-20" is the production date in the Showa calendar (51 years since the emporer acceded the throne), meaning 20th July 1977 in the western calendar.

@precertvideo Do they still do this as far as you know? Do Seiko and citizen as well? Thanks.
@precertvideo

@roadgent7921 Seiko can be dated from the serial number (first digit of serial is last digit of year, followed by month). I haven't looked at modern Casio so I i dont know if they still do it, but I doubt it. Not sure about Citizen. Some Ricoh are dated inside.

As a jeweler I should point out you can't polish scratches out. All you get is shiny scratches. the surface needs to be reduced using ever finer abrasives until it is uniform and flat. TEHN you can polish it.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches Жыл бұрын
Well yes but they are light surface scratches that can be improved. I use very fine polishing compound and a combination of felt and cotton. I know all about abrasives as it’s part of my day time business so only use the best stuff. Menzerna for this application. The watch looked better as a result and as I used no pressure I didn’t loose any of the lines of the case. I am only a hobbyist but I have restored many cases over the years with some good results. Jewellery on the other hand is next level stuff, even brighter but so much smaller which I am sure is a whole new level of skill.

I bought my first digital watch in 1983. $13 Casio. I wore it for 8 years until the case failed. Got another same model. Wore that one for another 8 years. Then I got a Casio with bigger numbers on the display. Now I have a cheap digital from Walmart that was clearance for $3. I bought a spare. Found they were discounted because people didn't know they had to be opened up to remove a plastic film over the battery.

I have been trying to get my favorite quartz watching going again this passed weekend. It is a DKNY NY1314, powered by two 377 batteries on two separate pads. The original batteries had left some corrosion on the board and the contact area, I had cleaned it throughly, even use Deoxit to clean its contacted. But when I install the new batteries, it only managed to power on briefly for 10 second or so. And I cannot for the life of me to find a consistent point where it is getting connection to power the watch in short burst. I even got it to run constant at some point, but as soon as I close the case back, the vibration was enough to shock it out of position where it was making contact. Much said that my favorite qurtz piece in my collection remains to be powered off.

Nightmare problems like that. If you stick at it long enough you will figure it out. I’ve found on stubborn old digitals that I put a battery in and then leave it on a radiator or carry it in my pocket for a day the heat occasionally kicks them back into life. Don’t ask me how but this has been the solution for a few over the years.
@rexypoooo
@rexypoooo Жыл бұрын
@@MyRetroWatches Thanks for the tricks! You know, since I cleaned the contact the weekend before, even it wasn't running, I left the batteries in the watch and just kept it in my watch box, and three days later, the watch came back alive! And it is still running uninterrupted! Haven't give it a field test yet, but I will see if wearing it out and about with motion and vibration will knock it out of place again.
