Hello, In this video I will stripdown the Seiko 6309 movement for the 5000 sub giveaway watch. Its the first look inside so the question is, Too far gone??? I am hoping you the viewer will leave comments below with your opinions on if you think this is salvageable, whether I have the ability to get this running again?
One more question is do you want to see a video on how I clean these parts?
I welcome any feedback!

I too would love to see a cleaning video, maybe one that doesn't require a super expensive setup as I do all my watch stuff on the kitchen worksurface or at my computer desk and I want to move deeper into actual servicing side of watches esp those that use the Vostok 2409 as I seem to have acquired a few of them now. I will only ever be an amateur but some of these wind up movements aren't hard to fix if you are mechanically and precision minded, the only down I have at the mo is second hands, I totally suck at second hands arrgh.

@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
moleman1961 blue tac is too tacky / sticky. This basically the difference. Rodico normal is green and is the least tacky one , I use this one on dials etc. They also have a premium which is grey , this is a bit stickier and is good for picking up parts with. What you don’t want is any residue left behind.

I hope you will give this little Seiko a second chance and a cleaning video would be fun to see. You were so quick to dismiss that pallet fork, is that a part which are usually just replaced in projects like this? Anyway thanks for sharing, it's a pleasure to see you work.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
john johnesn thanks for your comment. Pallet fork is a vital part so rust in the area it’s in will impede the running as it contacts the impulse Jewel . It could snag or cause drag. These are going at 5 beats per second so the tiniest amount of disruption over a period of time will effect the running. Better to change than chance it.

Challenging movement to bring back. How worn was the lower mainspring arbor port? Would love to see the inside of the mainspring barrel. Keep going. A few rusted parts to replace but appears salvageable. You should try out some rust removal solutions WD40 and see if the parts like the pallet can be salvaged. Would be cool to salvage and clean all the rusted parts and make this watch go again.

Continue on Mike. This looks interesting to rebuild. I would like to learn how to put back a disassembled movement. Looks and feels daunting to remember what goes where. Especially when you put parts into a cleaning bin. Do I start by practicing segment by segment? Or just go through the whole thing?
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Rest assured this watch will be restored. Rebuilds at first will feel daunting but if you take lots of photos as you go you have a record . My first ever rebuild when I dismantled I would take the part off and then refit a few times just to get the feel of how it went . I have always recommended this very 6309 movement for a beginner as they are not that difficult and parts are easy to find. Thanks for your support

@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Bill A thanks Bill. Camera angle is so difficult to be honest as you need it pretty close to the watch to keep the resolution. I have been thinking of a B roll which I am actually looking into but means considerable more time editing . I’ve always felt that over the top looking down was the best angle but true when unscrewing you get a great shot of my fingers!

Hiya and I bring you a question being a mechanical minded type.I have an old seiko 7009 powered watch that no longer works but the balance wheel is a lot smaller than a Chinese unknown movement watch I have that equally doesn't run but they both ran at 6bps. Are Seiko's poor amplitude due to having such light mass balance ,s? Surely they lack momentum? Just a thought for nothing? Good content. Cheers,Len.
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 4 жыл бұрын
Glenn Powell interesting question and one I don’t really know the answer to. The 7### balance is much smaller than the 6### but on both series you can expect the same amplitude so I theorise size is not the riding factor. Possibly mainspring power. The pallet fork holds all the power on the train by the mainspring so you would assume less power less amplitude. Hair spring will also have resistance in it. These are just my thoughts but you definitely ask a very good and interesting question so hopefully someone else might also comment on this here.

Maybe you could redo that inner bezel in superlume? 😃 I think that would look cool. Less original, but perhaps compatible with the original look? 😕 I know nothing about fixing watches, but have collected automatic and manual winding watches for the past 20 years since about age 18 or 19. Have sold many due to financial hardships, job loss, and other stuff over the years, and currently don't have an overly huge collection. I have owned a Seiko 5 automatic in the past, and regrettably sold it when in my early 20's. It was unbelievably accurate, even comparable to quartz! 😲 Finally came to the conclusion in recent years, that to prevent future regret, I no longer sell any watches, no matter what. I've always thought it would be cool to learn how to repair watches, and maybe even build my own from spare parts and stuff someday? Have tried disassembling a few broken automatic watches over the years, mainly out of curiosity to see how they look. It usually ends in frustration, brute force, wrenching parts out with screwdrivers and hammers, and various other stages of demolition until it's satisfactorily disassembled...only to be tossed in the trash! 😂😱 I wish I hadn't chucked all those broken watches in the trash over the years. But in all fairness, some of them were Chinese replica watches anyway, that only lasted a year or two, and other cheap $100-200 automatics. Maybe watching your channel I'll learn a few things? 😀 Very interesting to see the microscope views of the tiny parts. Also, I'm willing to donate a sapphire crystal for this build. It's a spare part from a demolished watch a few years back, maybe it'll fit this watch you're working on? Out of all the broken watches I've torn apart/demolished, this is the only spare thing I kept, mainly because it's sapphire and just cool being scratchproof. It looks to be about 33mm. Not sure on thickness. One edge for the surface is bevelled. Flat and not domed/convex.

Hi and thank you for your comment. its an interesting read and I am sure many others including me can relate to it. If you buy some basic tools and and old $20 seiko you will be surprised on what you might be able to achieve with the right frame of mind. I have quite a few video series on Seiko automatic movements which you could follow along to. As for your crystal thanks but it would be unlikely to fit. this will need to be an acrylic one for this watch and possibly with a tension ring.
