Hello Darren, I need to say; you bring a calming effect to folks like myself who are potentially terrified and fed up with/by the vast problems that can-and do- plague complicated newer RVs as is the case with boats ! Clearly, I’m not the only one who appreciates your knowledge , willingness to share it, AND your wit and wonder at explaining things. I feel fortunate to live in this area and don’t feel we need to roam too far to be in cool spots like the one in this vid, a favorite of ours, especially down in the no-power area in the trees, a good place for healthy batteries, not so good for solar. The surf beach below to west also a fun spot to ‘noodle around’ at low tide. I appreciate your enthusiasm for big guns trying to protect that huge expanse of water ! Thank You for all you do, I wish you long and great health and hope you can find time to get out with fam’ and enjoy the good life, Cheers~~~~> Anacortes Dan & Jean

Wow, I appreciate the Great comment! It's nice to hear a kind word. I don't mind helping folks understand their RVs, but it is like drinking from a fire hydrant. Sometimes I come across a comment like yours and it gives me a a moment of pause and reflection that the world is good LOL. Thank you for that!

I wanted you to know (after I'd emailed and you responded a couple of months ago), I was unaware I had a crack along the top of my slide out because it never completely slid out, but I saw a lengthy strip of light reflecting one day off the slide roof through the top rubber gasket, onto my ceiling inside. It's my living room slide out there's a couch and a kitchen table and chairs on it. It was sitting like that for almost two years. I had NO IDEA!!!! So I went outside today before the cold weather comes to Colorado -4°F by Saturday night, and I looked at the teeth on the two gears and they looked fine, the pin was on the driveshaft and I turned the driveshaft maybe a half a turn (if that) and then a little bit more until it was tight and it lined up the top of my slide-out and it's not leaking anymore. This video saved me. You have the best RV repair videos that I've seen because of your patience and your kind heart toward the repairs. Many other people say go to the motor and put your 9/16 drill bit on it and turn it that way but this was so much easier. I live in my RV so I'm not going anywhere anytime soon but when I do I'll check into why it stopped working. It made noise, so I was glad it petered out when open. Thank you SO MUCH!! Happy New Year!

Thanks for the great comment. All comments aren't as nice as yours. But it's nice to hear a good one. Of course there's always 'experts' out there that want to tell me I don't know what I'm doing. But I will keep doing this and serving the needs of others out there that are willing to watch. My end in mind is to help everybody save money on their repair bill and do their own repairs. Lots more videos coming. Happy camping.

Last night we stopped to stay at a BLM location for the evening. When we began to move out the slide, we quickly discovered that only one side was moving! This was the first night of our 3-week trip and it was quite the disappointment. We spent the night at that location, and I then watched some videos this morning to help me understand what may be happening. We have a 2021 Outdoors RV Timber Ridge travel trailer, and it turns out that it has a similar rack and pinion mechanism. We were 200 miles from home so I decided to get back home and open things up so I could see what was happening. When I opened up the coroplast, a bolt and washer landed on my forehead. Yep, it was the #3 bolt you spoke about in this video, so I knew exactly how to fix it! Now we're ready to get back out on the road. Thanks for providing great information that probably saved me a couple hundred dollars and several days waiting for someone to come out and get it repaired.

First off I love your videos. I am older and retired now but I have always been hands on and mechanically inclined. There are quit a few things that I have tackled on my own in the past. There are still things that I might be able to just figure out on my own and get them repaired and a few more that would just be a little too demanding for me to try giving my physical condition now a days. Your videos have helped me determine those tasks and keep me from getting over my head. Thank you for your time and efforts keep up the good work. I have found myself a reliable and fair Mobile RV Tech here near me but I wish he would stock more of the needed parts on hand to streamline the repairs as you do. I guess my only alternative is to plan my brake downs for when I am in the pacific northwest. Continue shooting and we will all continue watching. Appreciate all the help you give.

When you're talking about aligning your slide room with a Lippert system - Lippert is buying up everybody else's system. So Power Gear is now Lippert, Schwintek is now Lippert, etc so depending on what 'Lippert' system you're trying to align might change how I would answer this. Feel free to reply with what kind of system you're working with and I will do my best and helping you out my friend.

Absolutely fantastic video, you're one I would describe as true professional, and it is shown by your desire to share and teach others. On a side note Allen fasteners with the exception of stainless steel typically are a Grade 9, and strangers that sounds great 8 fasteners have a much lower Shear strength then grade 3 and grade 5 bolts, imagine a grade 8 bolt like a drill bit just the tiniest amount of flex and snap it's done. *edit thumbs up in a new subscriber because of your great attitude.

Thanks for your great videos! I have a 2012 Rockwood 29' with super slide and Lippert system that looks similar to this that is not extending. The motor makes noise but the slide doesn't budge. I tried removing the nut like you showed in the video and turning the shaft manually with a large crescent wrench but it won't budge at all. Are there any other tricks to turning the shaft or should I just assume there's a similar situation as in your video and open the other side to check out/replace the motor? Thanks from Maryland!

It turned out that my gears needed more soaking time with PB Blaster and more taps from my 2 pound hammer. After, I was able to turn it with my big crescent wrench and then the motor was able to move the slide in and out. I made sure to thoroughly lubricate the slide once it was running.

Hi , great video . I have been looking for some info on my slide . It looks just like this one and the gear and the rack teeth are worn and makes a very loud pop when going in and out ,due to improper adjustment I think . Anyway Lippert isn't very helpful in the parts identification area and I am wondering if you can help or suggest a place to start . I have the same type of slide on two of my slides. The problem is that my living room slide is pretty light yet still large but seem to have no issues. The other side is the kitchen with a lot more weight on it such as the frig and stove and fireplace and convection oven. When this slide goes out it has a tendency to not stay parallel with the RV wall so lucky for me I am able to push it out on the one side while energizing the switch for the motor. Obviously a pain in the butt literally. The design should have been the motor in the middle and the square tube on either side turning the gear so that the slide slides out evenly on both sides. Not the case obviously so the other thought was to add another motor in tandem with the existing motor on the opposite of the slide. Might be expensive. I have had a RV center look at it and complained about it because I bought off of them but. They are apparently useless so I have had to take care of things myself. This particular dilemma I am stumped on how I can get this slide to slide out evenly. My wife does not even want to touch the slides as she is afraid of the clunking noise when the one side jumps a gear and of course gets out of alignment. Reached out to the manufacturer Prime Design and they had a fix but very primitive in my opinion and basically a make shift clamp around the gear to squeeze the sliding track and prevent. It from jumping a gear tooth. Do you or anyone have any idea on a much more professional fix can be attained for this one particular slide? I also failed to mention that when either slide goes out that because it is being pushed out from the bottom it has a tendency for the slide to go out further on the bottom then the top and the odd time have had to pull or push at the top to give it a helping hand.

I believe you are correct. Of all the gun battery sites throughout this region only for Casey has a gun on display. But, the batteries are really exciting to explore even without the guns. Very helpful info. and glad to see you have the customer's interest in mind also. Wish we were closer so I could bring my project to you. I had to remove the pinion end (far end ) it didn't have a bolt but rather a pin that appeared to have rusted causing the (week link) to give way and I could not get the remnants out of the gear shaft. Is there a trick to re timing it and also re installing the gear ? Working on it now 9/23/19 edit also glad you said a grade 3 or 5 bolt I was going for a grade 8 till I remembered that.

When I re-align these systems. I manually bring them in using whatever tactics are available. I start with the slide room totally sealed in against the outside wall. That usually aligns all the racks and pinions and is a good starting point. To replace the gear pack. I've use floor jacks to lift up the RAM and then slide the new gear pack with the bolts and everything, fits in nicely. A shop trick is to remove the center steel shaft from the gear pack and hit it with some grease and that should help prevent it from squeaking later.

Great video. I'm confused by what that actuator does, as the electric motor turns the gearbox which turns that square drive rod with that Class 3 bolts which turns the gear which drives that rack on the slide. Right? So if that is what moves the slide in and out then what is the role of the actuator? Confused!

Your videos are awesome! I have a 20 foot slide with a schwintek slide mechanism with 2 racks on each side of the slide. My worse nightmare involves it not working. Curious, how easy or hard would a slide be to manually push it in or out in the event my slide motors have issues? Maybe some day you will get called on one similar and can do a video :) (Not wishing anyone that problem :) )

Hi Bill, Schwintech (or as Lippert calls it the “In-Wall” system) is one of my favorites to work on. The good news is that the control module will help you diagnose most issues and even has a manual recovery mode you can access. I will be uploading a video soon where I demonstrate how to lubricate this system. If you keep everything properly lubricated (assuming the mfg installed everything correctly) than you should have years of issue free slide-out happy camping. If you get in trouble here are three recovery methods that should help you get home: The first step is to locate the control module for that slide. Black box about the size of a cigar box but only ½ as tall. White sticker on front with lots of writing and an opening with red and green LED’s and a push button. Once you find it take a moment to read the part about manual recovery and the different fault indicators. There is a lot of good information there. Your first recovery option is to press the controller button 6 times and hold on the 7th. LED's will blink rapidly. Then when you press the slide room button the room will only retract. That step is outlined on the white sticker. Your second recovery option is to unplug the motor harness (two of them) from the controller and energize the red and black wires with 12 volts. This will send power only to the motors directly (bypassing the controller completely). Change wire polarity to reverse motor direction. Once you have the room retracted than reconnect the motor harnesses to the controller. Your third recovery option (this is if the wire or motors have been damaged) is to access the motor from the outside. You will find a screw (usually behind the ‘D’ seal above the elevation of the top rack. If you pull the wiper seal back and look behind, you will see the silver motor. The screw I am directing you to is near the top of the motor and is used to keep the motor seated in the bearing block. You will need to remove the screw so you can take a screwdriver and lift the motor up and un-seat it from the bearing block. This will allow you to physically push the slide room in (may take a few helpers - I have had to use a hydraulic ram before on ones that were really wedged). Once the room is pushed back in you can access the motor from the inside and re-seat it in the bearing block to hold the room while you drive. Slide locks will also be a good idea to keep the room held in. I have done a lot of work on this system and am looking forward to the next job where I must completely remove one of the sides to replace a bearing block or something. Usually those are warranty claims. Hopefully you never will need to do this but if you do I should have a video uploaded to demonstrate how it is done. Thanks for the question and I hope you never need to know this! LOL Happy Camping! Cheers, Darren Koepp

@@MyRVWorks Cool! I need to find spend some time to find the control box. I looked online and it seems the thing could be in a number of different places. I assume it would be in the slide side. I have a 2017 Georgetown 31B3 Motorhome. The industry needs more folks like you. You should offer apprenticeships :) If you could clone yourself you could make a mint! You are a true professional!

@@BillCClinton Thanks for the vote of confidence. I never expected my KZfaq channel to take off like it has. It has certainly opened new opportunities I never considered. Lots of folks are reaching out to me asking for just such a thing. Not sure what that will look like and how to do that and service my customers up here. It has all happened quickly. What surprises me is the RV Techs in the shops that are contacting me with questions. I would expect them to know a lot of this stuff and have the tools and knowledge, but I am finding out that many of them don’t! scary to think what is happening at the dealerships and shops on these repairs eh’. If you have a motorhome the control module is usually located in an outside compartment attached to the ceiling of that compartment. So, start the hunt there. They do make a subtle click sound when they start the motors - you can listen for that while someone is hitting the switch to extend/retract. Good luck! Cheers, Darren

Possibly you misspoke about the grade of the bolt. correct me if I'm wrong. Using charts on the internet for SAE bolts, I find no Grade 3. I do find Grade 2,5, and 8. Reason is I want to check what I have on my slide but needed to know what the marking look like.

PTFE or Teflon never breaks down. Eventually we will have Teflon in everything we eat if we keep using it. RV's don't last that long, so maybe we could use an environmentally friendly lubricant instead.

I've got a Lippert above floor unit (single track) at the rear bedroom in my Class C. It stopped working and wouldn't slide out. The motor ran but no movement. I found out that a pin connecting the motor gear reducer and the main slide gear had sheared. Is it okay to replace it with a bolt or is that suppose to be a shear pin?
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks 4 жыл бұрын
A bolt should be fine. I usually go with a grade 3. People get into trouble when they install a more Stout bolt. That is supposed to be the weak Link in the chain so that your gearbox is not eat itself.

i have a slide with the exact same mechanism. when the slide is out all the way, it does not seem like the non actuator side is out 100%. the actuator side is tight. would i make adjustments by taking the weight off the slide and loosening the 15/18 tooth gear, getting the slide into position and putting everything back together or would i loosen the bolts at the end (near the vertical adjustment) and just move that end of the slide and re-tighten? thanks!

Is there a usual place for circuit breakers (maybe near the slide motor) for Forest River? My front stabilizing jack quit, then the slide quit. I don't see any problems with fuses on the panel. Do they put them in a hidden location near the motor?
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks 4 жыл бұрын
This is an area that plagues most techs. However, on your front stabilizer Jacks, if you follow the wire from the motor, it should go to the battery. Between the motor and the battery there should be a 30 amp fuse. Hope that helps.

I found two circuit breakers up under the front on the wood at the end of the trailer near the hitch. Also, I used the remote to operate the leveler. The DPDT switch has failed. I guess it was not waterproof.

Question; what do you need to lubricate the rails and the rubber seals ? Dealer tells me to not use anything, it will gum it up? and the rubber will break down on the seals. ????

Thetford makes a slide out seal conditioner. It is in a spray can and goes on like foam. Spray it on and wipe it off. Others use baby powder poured into an old sock and knock the sock against the seals. This keeps the seals from sticking to the slideout frame. Personally I’ve used both and I like the Thetford.

Hi I have a slide out that when I open it, the top falls back inside the camper, but the bottom operates as it should (or seems like it). It looks like the same motor/gear set up that you showed in this video, except it only has one ram and it is all inside the camper under the bed (small slide out). Any thoughts?
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks 4 жыл бұрын
From what you were describing it sounds like the slideroom needs to be aligned. Often times you have to take the under part of the bed apart to get to all of the mechanisms. Good luck

So what does the linear actuator do?
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks 5 жыл бұрын
What I call a linear actuator some call an Acme screw. The idea is there is a long screw with square grooves and a shuttle, or something like that, is set in that groove and moves back and forth when the screw turns. In this case the slide room is attached to the shuttle so when the screw turns and the shuttle moves the slide room goes in or out.

So are these actuators direct wired 12vdc or is there a Lippert controller? If there is a controller where is a good place to find it in a travel trailer (not 5th wheel)
