after ben's announcement that barry had 30 seconds remaining we see at least 50 seconds of footage that was not made up of multiple shots that actually filmed the same scene. why always use a "timer" when it is artificial like this? i think there has only been 1 or 2 times in the history of this channel someone went over the time limit. somehow everyone always finishes just in the nick of time, yet we never seen them go slightly over. and just to answer your point @xoysin, they have done practically the exact budget battle you mentioned. i believe they were titled grocery store challenges if you would like to search the channel for videos of the battle you are requesting.

That was definitely a tough one. With those ingredients I think I would do a smoked haddock that was dredged in the cup of soup mix and then coated with the crisps and pair that with a compote made from the rhubarb, tomato and tarragon. And then, I think a bread pudding with the malt loaf and some of the rest of the rhubarb would do nicely too.

Exactly what I was thinking as soon as I seen the crisps . But I would have used the cup a soup and made a sauce with the tomatoes and tarragon too drizzle over the fish and a nice toasted malt loaf as a base
@Bluemayje

@@ashleywyatt1266 The cup a soup was definitely the wild card in this thing. I had also considered maybe a cup a soup infused custard, but couldn't figure out how I would use it as part of a dish.
@grouch314

I was thinking similar. Haddock panne'd in the crisps, with a thick sauce made with the tomato, tarragon and rhubarb, with just a little bit of cup a soup to thicken and bind it Definitely malt loaf as a dessert. Either a bread and butter sort of thing, or with stewed apples, raisins, winter spices and custard but the apples might have taken too long

I might do a cheeky fish pie with the smoked haddock, soup mix, tomatoes, tarragon and kettle chips. Don't think there's enough chips to rehydrate to use as a mash potato top though but I'll roughly crush the whole bag up to top it off, the bottom layer would go a little soggy and mash-esq while the top stays crunchy for texture. The malt loaf and rhubarb would be a simple bread butter pudding of sorts. Pretty straight forward segregation of sweet and savoury. If time wasn't a concern I'd put the fish pie mix into a silicon mould to freeze and panne it (twice) for a super indulgent arancini of sorts. I'd make some kinda salsa with the tarragon, tomatoes and probably a bit of that rhubarb water/juice that would otherwise go into the other (sweet) dish.

American here, confused by the term "tortilla". On this side of the pond, "tortilla" means a flat bread made of either flour or corn, served as the base of tacos, burritos, etc. I think we would refer to what Baz made as a frittata, but I could be wrong. And I think I would have looked at those ingredients, said "nope" and made a McDonald's run. 😁

no we have these in the US too, but we say Spanish tortilla to differentiate from Mexican/Latin am tortillas. This is an actual, very popular dish from Spain. I love tomatoes & keep them in the fruit bowl to be eaten with other fruit. (My doctor actually had to have me lay off them for a while as they were interfering with an old medicine I was taking at the time). But yeah, when you get a big juicy tomato, I love biting a hole & sucking the seeds & pulp out. But in cooking sometimes you do have to remove the pulp & seeds as they're just too wet for the texture/stability of the dish. I don't waste them though, they're a chefs perk when I do that.

Let the normals struggle with a mystery box full of difficult ingredients just like this, but have both Ebbers and Kush watching with the angle that they are next up with the same ingredients. As they watch and comment they are also taking inspiration and seeing what works so that for their turn they can attempt something fantastic. I would have tried to do: malt loaf blitzed and roasted till dry, rhubarb and water to make a puree, mix in crushed roasted malt loaf and cook to make a thick sweet and sour sauce. Smoke fish cut into a fillet, flash fry in a smoking pan to get the skin crispy. Then brush one side with egg and then coat in crushed chips, then bake till cooked and 2 crispy sides, 1 from the crispy skin and from the chip breadding. The soup is mostly cornflour, so I'm thinking sifting the veg out, then cutting medalions of tomato and dipping into the sieved soup powder on both cut sides, dip in egg then back into the soup powder and deepfry. So a crispy coated smoked haddok, with a side of southern fried heirloom tomatoes, served with a rhubarb and malt reduction

Two Part brunch? Smoked haddock on a crisp (chip) tortilla/frittata thing with a sliced of grilled tomato and tarragon hollandaise. Also using that malt cake as a base for a breakfast bread pudding with a rhubarb syrup (gastrique?, not sure what defines that).

I distinctly remember watching Sorted a good 10 years ago having a laugh at how poor the 'normals' did in the kitchen. Over the last 2 years i'd say they've equalled me at the least, and over the last few months i've been getting dinner ideas from them. Crazy. All the love and respect, lads. Thank you for keeping me interested in the kitchen

I think I would’ve used the malt loaf and baked it to take some of the moisture out, then blitz it up into a bread crumb consistency with the crisps. Then panne the fish in it. Then use the cupasoup with tarragon as a sauce with a fresh tomato and rhubarb (rhubarb to be cooked with a little bit of brown sugar) salsa. I don’t know how it would all taste but I’d love to do one of these challenges one day ☺️

VERY tricky one, but Jamie was the clear winner. As an alternative, how about using the crisps as 'breadcrumbs' to coat the haddock & pan-fried, then using the soup instead of milk/cream as the liquid for mashed potatoes, served with pan-fried tomatoes & a tarragon & soup 'gravy'? Then, for pud, how about a rhubarb crumble, with the malt loaf chopped into tiny bits and mixed into the rhubarb as chewy sweet flavour-bombs, served with custard or cream?

it would be interesting to see the mystery boxes have a "here's what the food team came up with" comparison much like the grocery battles as it would be interesting to see how else it could have been done and potentially elevated with a chef's touch

battered fish using the cup of soup and crisps as the flour and breadcrumbs serve with heirloom tomato and rhubarb ketchup and a couple of chips

What would I do before watching? Tarragon mashed potatoes from the crisps, a smokey haddock soup with ramen-style noodles, and a malted bread pudding (with egg-based custard, assuming the eggs were part of the equation). The tomatoes would add richness and depth to the soup, while the other half would be used in plating with a touch of salt. Being mildly allergic to rhubarb, I'd likely add it to the bread pudding, as it offsets the sweetness in a pleasant way.

Sweet and salty goes well together, so does salty and sour, and obviously sweet and sour does as well. Maybe some faux rhubarb-fish-egg curry with some malt bread crumbled on top. Using the cup a soup for what it really is, a stock cube with some starch added. Still thinking what to do with the crisps tho :)

I would have used the crisps and eggs to make the coating for fish goujons. I loved the rhubarb and custard though - I will be giving this a go

I would try using the chips and the soup mix to bread the fish and fry it. The rubar and tomato I would make a slaw. I never had malt loaf.. it might work to thicken a sauce for the fish?

If I was put to the challenge of using these ingredients, I would have dredged the haddock with egg and the cup a soup mix powder and then crust it with the crisps. Fry it off. Tarragon hollandaise sauce for the fish. A tomato and rhubarb side salad with malt loaf croutons.

my immediate thought was fish and chips, using the rhubarb with the tomatoes for a ketchup, maybe malt loaf mixed with crisps for the batter ( im feeling ill thinking about it)
