When I heard Ben say that Jamie was either resting or getting a drink because he was outside of a pub, but then it turns out he was getting an ice cream instead, I sincerely thought, "That's the kind of man I'd want to marry." There are certain takeaway meals where I'd prefer to buy rather than cook myself. Either I don't want to bother to make the dish because I don't want to buy all the ingredients or I don't want to make something complicated. I'm sure the dish Baz made was tasty i don't think you can exactly compare it with kimchi fried rice (he didn't use any kimchi) 😅 Koreans do cook with fish sauce it's not usually in fried rice. The best kimchi fried rice has super fermented kimchi that mellows out when cooked. I learnt from my mom to add the kimchi liquid as well and a bit of sesame oil. Garnish with green onion and sesame seeds. Typically the seaweed is actually in the rice so Baz got that spot on! An easy protein to add is canned tuna (korean super markets will also have a spicy seasoned tuna too)

It's pretty common here in Korea to see seaweed shredded on top rather than mixed in, but it would be unusual to find tuna in kimchi fried rice. Kimchi jjigae, sure, but not bokkumbap . . . Then again, they made "Korean" fried rice with SE Asian fish sauce, British sausage, and packet Basmati rice, so those are pretty minor quibbles . . .

I'm torn on this because I think Barry's dish is quite different from the restaurant's dish. Just a tip on Ben’s comment about cleaning hot pans: it is much easier but you shouldn’t clean a hot non-stick pan straight away. Rapidly cooling the pan with the water will speed up the degradation of the non-stick coating. Letting it cool down on the hob for a little bit will help prolong the life of the pan just a little.

It doesn't miss the point, your reason just isn't the point. Some people order out is to save time, this proves that it doesn't save time. Seems like a pretty clear win in time for takeaway if you don't faff around getting and eating an ice cream on the way and if you don't hand wave away the time to properly clean up all your kitchen equipment, your hobs, your used dishes, and cutlery(and that's even compounded by the fact that you gave Barry tracking info so he knew the pace he needed to be working at rather than just letting him work at his natural pace whether that was fast or slow). Not to mention the difference in effort is even more skewed in favor of takeaway if we assume your takeaway option is something you pick up on your way home rather than getting home then going out again to pick up food.
@YaaLFH
@YaaLFH 6 ай бұрын
Not so clear. Barry was flapping quite a bit and Jamie was lucky that the restaurant wasn't very busy so he didn't have to wait. They said the restaurant was 11 minutes away, so let's say 23 minutes minimum, and possibly longer at lunch/dinner time. The dish Barry made can be done in 15 minutes including cleanup.
@Vallgor
@Vallgor 6 ай бұрын
I feel like Ben will stop at nothing to say doing it at home is better. I feel like most takeaways are "I cant be arsed" "This tastes better" or "I'm walking past it so I'll stop and grab it". The timer should be from Barry's steps in the kitchen till he has cleaned up.

@@YaaLFH I've never seen any home cook make real food and do a legit not halfassed cleanup in 15 minutes but if we want to play theorycrafting sure let's say 15 minutes. And if Jamie planned ahead called in an order and picked it up on his way to the office/home/studio he's not adding any distance onto his travel time, shouldn't have any wait time because he called ahead and the order should in theory be ready at or before his arrival time, and has zero cleanup thus taking 0 minutes. But that's also laughably unrealistic like your theorycrafting.
@YaaLFH

@@gnomersy1087 It's 2023, people have dishwashers. Barry was flapping, in general he's not great with cleaning up as he goes and that's where he wastes time. I'm not theorycrafting, I cook this type of dishes very often and I don't flap because I don't like wasting time.

@@YaaLFH lol you are absolutely theorycrafting. "If __ didn't do this then __" is the literal definition of theorycrafting. If you want to say you cook faster than Barry did then good for you here's a pat on the back kiddo go buy yourself a treat. Additionally "not great at cleaning up as he goes" describes the vast majority of home cooks. And if you think "people have dishwashers" excuses cleaning time you are incredibly privileged. I personally have lived in multiple places without dishwashers I have many friends who live in places without dishwashers I know many people who don't have dishwashers that can accommodate pots and pans or do a very poor job of cleaning them. That's the point of take away. obviously don't get it all the time but maybe once every 1 or 2 weeks is perfectly fine if it gets you that relaxed day you really need. + you may not have shopped for what you needed that week so take oout does give you 50 options vs 2 options.

The price would vary depending on how much you used it. If you used it for six meals a week every week it works out at 16 cents per portion for two people, for a larger family it would be cheaper because you only need one subscription and obviously if you used it less it would cost more per portion. Plus there's nothing stopping you making a note of recipes you like to use after your subscription expires, which makes it basically impossible to give a per portion value. Also, you only need the app to make that specific recipe - there are loads of free recipes online. It's not like you couldn't do the same thing without the app - you'd just have to do your own planning.

Tbh Sorted seem to espouse a lot of kinda reductive opinions about food; these videos obviously aren't legitimate contests, just a means to plug their app by subtly bashing the whole idea of ordering takeout. I've had great takeout food and getting some of my time and effort back that's stolen by work more than validates the occasional high cost (i've had some very affordable takeouts too, certainly less expensive than eating at London based restaurants). It's satisfying in a different way to home cooked meals and there's totally space for both to be enjoyed. Heck, they did a whole series singing the praises of overpriced restaurant meal kits in the interest of helping the hospitality industry, but that courtesy doesn't extend to more humble takeout places? If anything, try and order more often from smaller, local places as opposed to big chains. I'm still gonna occasionally want a greasy chain 'za tho, that's never gonna change.

Does this challenge factor in the time spent rummaging through the fridge and putting ingredients together, or is everything needed already laid out for Baz? I feel like a home cook would need to factor that in.

I’m watching this from Seoul and this is a train wreck that I can’t take my eyes off of. 1) sausage doesn’t belong in kimchi fried rice 2)fish sauce doesn’t belong in kimchi fried rice 3) where is your kimchi??? I saw no kimchi go into Barry’s kimchi fried rice 4) the seaweed is usually in much smaller pieces in the rice and wilted in OR on the side like the takeout place did. BUT you are supposed to take a piece of seaweed and put some kimchi fried rice on it and fold it like a taco, then eat it. The guys didn’t even touch the seaweed. 5) BARRY TURN OFF THE HOB!!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think it would be real interesting to see this kind of concept but more in real time. Could just be a video of it with minimal editing or could incorporate it into a future live event, but i think that would be really interesting. Ethan Chlebowski does this kind of video often and does more or less that exact concept. Hell, could even have him on for it!

I think Jamie actually says it best here - with the focus on 'priorities around money'. I love videos like this, but it wasn't quite hitting the mark for me because getting a takeaway is also about the low effort, some dishes which are harder to make at home, or sometimes so me and my fiancée can have different things! So when Ben was talking about doing takeaway better at home, it wasn't quite hitting right - but I think Jamie's comment specifically around money is a better point of this video. Takeaway is great, but expensive and if you don't have the spare cash, this shows that the alternative works.
@LanLiggins

So - i want to preface this with - I am a big fan of you guys, will continue to be, and will continue to watch your videos. And I really hope you can take this as constructive criticism rather than hate. I really, really don’t think it was fair to name the restaurant that you got this from. This video is designed to plug your app to cook at home, which is fine, and great, and promoting the App is incredibly important for you guys to continue doing what you’re doing, since it’s part of what you guys get your money from. Bari Bari are (from a quick google) not a chain, they’re a standalone, ran by people who will also just be trying to continue what they’re doing. I don’t think it was fair for you to name them and call them ‘the cheaper version’ of a meal you’ve made. You could have easily left them anonymous, and not dragged them for the sake of this video.

Im sceptical about this one. Ive only used packet rice a few times but I've found it really horrible. Bit rubbery and has a weird fake smell to it. Sure the ingredients might mask the smell but still. There's no way it comes close to chilled rice that's been wok fried. I cant help feeling like this is a bit of an advert for their app being better than takeaway.

Seen this type of thing a few times. And nobody seems to mention that you also have to take into account the time planning your meals as well as shopping, as well as cleaning, plus there's almost always some food wastage. Plus when you're cooking for 1, theres barely any recipes designed for singular meals. So yeah, if you're cooking for a whole family it might even out, maybe, but grabbing a bite on the way home from work is so much less hassle.

Watching this while eating drive thru mexican-ish...and I'll say one advantage to the take-out, is the spontaneity. you can change your mind from KFC to a burger, to Mexican 5 times over 5 minutes, with no concern over what you shopped for 7 days ago. On top of that, the impulse buy options are real. I went out today for a burrito, and there was a "brand new limited time" item on the menu, I got to discover a whole new dish. Very yummy, and I can never plan to surprise myself if I'm the one cooking.

9:57 actually putting water into a really hot pan is the best way ( as in really dumb way) to ruin your frying pan, they will warp eventually if not right away and will never sit flat on your hob again. If you have good non-stick pans they dont need a wash that urgently and usually some paper towel will clean them off.
