Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: Both smoking and alcohol consumption can have harmful effects on the developing baby. Smoking increases the risk of complications such as low birth weight and premature birth. Alcohol consumption can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) which can cause lifelong physical and behavioral problems.
Drug Use: Illicit drug use, including substances like cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, can harm the developing baby and increase the risk of birth defects, premature birth, and other complications.
Excessive Caffeine Consumption: While moderate caffeine intake is generally considered safe during pregnancy (usually up to 200mg per day), excessive caffeine consumption should be avoided as it may increase the risk of miscarriage and low birth weight. It's advisable to limit caffeine intake from sources like coffee, tea, and energy drinks.
Certain Medications: Some medications can be harmful during pregnancy. It's important for pregnant women to consult their healthcare provider before taking any medication, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to ensure they are safe for the baby.
Raw or Undercooked Foods: Consumption of raw or undercooked meats, eggs, seafood, and unpasteurized dairy products should be avoided during pregnancy to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses such as salmonella and listeria, which can harm both the mother and the baby.
