In this episode we fix down the track, install the electronics and some magnets for automatic decoupling. We also uncover a bit of a glaring error....

I'm confused. You appear to have years of experience but on your first build. I am blown away by your skill and your knowledge. I haven't done any build and I'm brand new to model railways. You appear to know SO much before you even started. What an inspiring video. Thank you. I hope to replicate plenty of this if I manage to get as far as a build.

Thanks again for another nice comment! It is really just planning and taking things slowly. Also watching other people and seeing how they do things. Let me know how you get on with your build, I hope it is progressing well.

Excellent 2nd episode, like the magnet idea, using the small magnets, I will give that a go ,the dapol ones are large and once the small ones are given a coat of black, assuming they still work, hardly noticeable

Hi Colin, thanks again for your comments. The small magnets have been working OK for me, however it is very hard to get a good balance where the magnets are strong enough to decouple the wagons but not too strong so that the train splits when you don't want it to. One thing I can say however is once painted and ballasted they're pretty hard to see.

Interesting video! Interesting use of the relays, tradionally you would just wire the switch to the point motor so not quite sure of the rational behind this. Love the use of 3d printing, it really makes a neat job in the build. Loved the trick in adding water to the rodding before you cut it! we have all made that mistake 😂😂😂 . Interested to see how your automatic couplings work over time as this has always been a big grey area in N-gauge, hopefully you've cracked it perfectly! 🤞. Looking forward to seeing your progress as you really have put some serious thought in to this build. All the best Tony.

Hi Tony - I have used relays so that the wires going to the switchbox can be much thinner - when using a CDU normally you need something like 18 to 16 AWG wire but the component cable I bought is made up of a bundle of wires around 24 AWG off the top of my head. The magnets aren't a perfect solution - you are always balancing the desire to uncouple easily without losing wagons when you want them to stay attached! With my current setup, whilst I can get them to uncouple every time, quite often a very unrealistic looking jerking motion is required to get it to operate! However, from a 'play feature' perspective it makes running the layout for its intended purpose (the 'Inglenook Shunting Puzzle') much more enjoyable as you aren't required to fiddle with the wagons by hand.

Really enjoying your build and your channel. I like how you're kinda discovering along the way different scenic aspects of your layout plan, and changing your plans as you go. Thing too many folks get hung up on what they think their layout goal should be or what they think they should be enjoying about their layout. See people often commenting about right ways and avoid doing this and that and you should be doing this without ever thinking once that their aim may be completely different from the aim of the layout builder. Btw, that's an awful lot of wires going on there. DC it'd have like two. Clockwork would be awesome lol (hence the writing of the last two sentences) Keep up the great channel production too. Easy viewing

Hi there, thanks for your comment I am glad to hear you have enjoyed my videos. I would agree that everyone has their preferences and there isn't a 'right' way. Yea the wiring is a bit of a jungle... in hindsight I probably could have simplified things by using a raspberry Pi or something similar.

The easi-shunt magnets will work *under* the track if you're able to carve out a slot for them in the foam. So you don't need to cut out any sleepers and you will have a bit more margin of error for placement of rolling stock when uncoupling.

Hmm, that is interesting, I found if I had them under the track then the magnets didn't work properly for me.

I've enjoyed watching your two videos to catch up with the output so far. Have you any experience with N gauge before or is this your first experience? You are obviously skilled in woodwork and electrical work. I too was interested in the use of the relays, which I have seen used before. But I suspect most other modellers aren't trying to achieve the things you wanted. It was very informative. I look forward to seeing the next video. Stephen

Hi Kevin, I will try and include supplies information in later videos. Either in the video or the description... however there are hundreds of different products for the layout so might struggle to get them all! If you have specific scenery items you'd like to know about, let me know and I will be happy give you more info. Most of the grass and natural products are by Woodland Scenics from my local railway shop for example. The foam base board is from amazon here: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009A826Y6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The main aim here was to get people working on their own layouts so glad you've decided to take the plunge! Cheers, Patrick

Hello there, you're welcome! Do you mean the pink foam on top of the baseboard? It is XPS extruded polystyrene sheet. I got it off of amazon but can't find it anymore... 75% sure it is this stuff but they only have it in quantities of five. www.amazon.co.uk/Foam-Insulation-Boards-1200-20mm/dp/B07WPW7J6Q/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=extruded%2Bfoam%2Bboard&qid=1670881144&s=instant-video&sprefix=extruded%2Bfoam%2Cinstant-video%2C98&sr=1-4&th=1

Hi Steven, I'm happy you gleaned something useful from the video! Sorry if the length isn't right for you, but 25-30 minutes is what I'm aiming for.... even that is hard considering most of these videos start with 3 to 4 hours of footage! Take it easy.

Personally, I found episode one unbeiievable. Were you building a gravestone? I thought, "Why not use a block of foam?" Then you laid apiece of foam on top of it! Enter episode 2 and I couldn't believe you were working on the same layout. There's more wiring than in a telephone exchange. Funnily enough, I al.so have en N gauge Inglenook puzzle. The baseboard is made from 1/4" balsa cut to shape with a scalple and glued with balsa cement. It measures 22" x 7" (590 x 178). In the event of an atomic war, mine won't survive, your's probably will. Please don't take this as criticism. I'm agast with admiration. Don't let it give you a hernia.

I have an N-gauge Inglenook made on a 1200x200mm scrap baseboard from someone else's layout. it is some blue particle/insulating board with a rough timber frame. far more solid than needed! just about to add a second Inglenook to it on the opposite side, in 2mm finescale
