Drilling miniature locomotive parts amid equipment failure

It was the best of jobs, it was the worst of jobs. I needed to drill some holes in some box tubing so I can make some locomotive trucks. Making these parts really was a lot more difficult (and expensive) than it needed to be. In the end, I have a brand new drill press and I finished all the parts I needed for this part of the locomotive build, so that's the important part. Now, have one working drill press and another project to work on.

A drill vise or a jig would help a lot to prevent the chattering, or even one of those welders vise grip clamps. And with a step drill it is also much easier for the machine to drill the holes. Those step drills come in different combinations of sizes, and they work really well.

I assume that you are going to be able to set one up for center and then the other for drilling would make sense 😊

It would if the motor on the first one hadn't burned out. I'm thinking I should put a DC motor on it with a SyRen 50 motor controller and a pair of batteries. Then, I would have an infinitely variable speed drill that I can run off the locomotive batteries for field work.

Assuming you didnt "let the smoke out" of the other motor, it may only need a replacement capacitor?

The motor got plenty hot.

A starting capacitor symptom would be over heating as the motor doesn't get up to speed and draws a lot of current. I had to replace the starting capacitor on my drill press a couple years ago. Love the Harbor Freight visual shot at the end!

Presumably you had the drive belt running from the smallest pulley at the motor to the largest at the chuck end? For the drill to be running too fast with a three/eighths drill was quite surprising. Maybe you could incorporate a speed controller between the foot switch and the motor for future use? Enjoyed watching the continuing Millbrook adventures!

Adding a speed controller did cross my mind. N1JIB

great job, do you have a guide or punch mark? to insure the drill points are true and centered? or does it not that critical to be absolutely perfect .good luck with the latest project.

I drew it close enough on the layout, center punched, then center drilled.
