I have only done trunnels in timber framing barns and such. Trunnels on land are not dowels. The best practice is to split the trunnels by hand then shave them following the grain. The finished peg is eight sided . By following the grain the peg is very strong. The octagonal shape locks in the hole. Splitting across the end grain and wedging makes them into a wooden rivet . Obviously, an octagon in a circular hole for a hull that might leak, but for frame work it wouldn’t be an issue. The woods do tend to deform around each other. Dowels, being cylinders are prone to grain run out and will fail at much lower forces. Modern wooden boats still have vestigial trunnels in the form of stopwaters.

This video ist still shown as being about "Stealer and drop planks" (last week's title). Maybe it can still be corrected? And thank you very much for the interesting video!

Extremely interesting as always. I am currently building the San Bartolome. Which I knew was a real ship, but the one by Pavel Nikkitin is what he calls retro style. My question is, do you think that ship had Tree nails or iron nails when it was built? I am just about to start that process and curious what you would do if you were building that model?

Why were pegs used vice wedges? Was it thought that they held better because a peg expanded the treenail in all directions instead of two?
@Pocketfarmer1
@Pocketfarmer1 Ай бұрын
The hole gets widened at both outer edges. The end grain of the pegs is split across the grain.The pegs are driven through so they stick out of both sides by a bit, like an inch or so. Then wedges are driven into the split and into the widened part of the hole. This makes a locked flare head essentially making a wooden rivet.

@@Pocketfarmer1 I think you misunderstood my question. I'm aware of the concept of wedging treenails (or pegs as you call them) to make them hold tighter. The peg I'm referring to, and what I think Dr. Batchvarov referenced, are pegs that are used instead of wedges. The pegs are square at the end (exterior) and taper to a point After the treenail is driven home, a hole is drilled in the end grain and the peg hammered in. Since the shape of this peg would require more effort to make versus a wedge I assume there would be a reason for using a peg vice a wedge.

How are you able to see the thumbs down ? Not that the doc deserves any . YT stopped showing me thumbs down on videos years ago.
