Thank you so much for your comment and kind words! Yes, these are the same drawings from Howard. I have seen photos of the Papegojan and you may well be right that the inspiration for it are these drawings. My friend Taras Pevny who recently reminded me of these drawings is in the process of studying them, though I don’t know when he will publish his findings. Until he does, I, obviously, can’t study them specifically. One day, however, when I find myself with leisure time to spare (meaning after I publish the 40 or so sites that I have to!) I may sit down and redraw the lines of these vessels and run hydrostatic analysis to see how they stack. There is a mid-17th c wreck of a middling-sized merchant ship that was excavated by the Dutch some decades ago. It has a cursory publication but no detail technical study, as far as I am aware. However what is visible of the frames coincides with what we see in smaller vessels, on Vasa and on Batavia. And on the jachr Vergulde Draeck’s fragments (for it is no more that survives of her), on the Mauritius, etc. Thus the method is well-attested in the archaeological record for variety of sized . In fact, for smaller coastal and inner waters craft, they continued to be built this way into the 19th c.

This is very kind of you! I do stand by the data. The excavation of Warwick (1619 wrecked) confirms the data. However the style of writing… ponderous is a polite way to describe it :-) For years I have been thinking of publishing an article based on it but after a major rewriting.

They are in the maritime museum in Amsterdam, I believe. Taras Pevny is studying them and I am looking forward to his analysis of them.

The different towns, regions, provinces were fiercely independent and steeped deep in their traditional rights and privileges that date to the Dark Ages almost. In fact this is how the troubles with the Spanish Habsburg began: the Habsburgs attempted to rationalize the measures and taxes ignoring the local traditions. We know how that ended!

Thank you for your kind words. Alas, my Dutch pronunciation tends to puzzle the Dutch 😆They tend not to recognize the words I am trying to pronounce. Microphone- it needs to be replaced with better quality, but the budget for it does not exist. The channel is not exactly a financially rewarding proposition :-)

As far as I am aware, the paper has been subjected to tests that proved it to be 17th century. Personally I haven’t seen the analysis, but seems to be pretty conclusive. Ab Hoving is a man whom I deeply respect and would never dismiss his opinion lightly. He has done a lot about bringing better understanding of Dutch shipbuilding to the front. His work has been very influential for me.
