South C used to be a posh classic area. What happened? Too many kiosk by the side of the road makes it look like a slum. The highrise Apartments also devalue the area.

My former hood. Wah! 25 years can change a lot of things. Back then we only had Plainsview, Golden Gate, Hazina, Riverbank, Kariba and thats it. Mariakani was not even considered part of South B it was borderline South C. Balozi was just a swamp we used to go hunting with dogs and rabbits.

I was born in Mater hospital. I remember going to visit family friends in south b, back then they were masionettes. I grew up in pangani, which had bungalos then. It's unfortunate that soon all of Nairobi will look like eastleigh, pipeline and kayole.

The facade of a once extremely beautiful residential area has changed. The home owners need to form an association and demand a better representation by the traders. Probably have model kiosks in which to replicate. And plant more trees, have landscape arch students doing their gradable practice there. When I was a student in MI I interviewed for a job which if had gotten it I would be driving along highway interstate rest areas looking for any landscape element out of place and noting it for replacement, while also planting tree, or shrub, perennial or ornamentals which need so. The continuous inbuilt maintenance makes a place better, just the same manner we have healthcare to treat ailments. Thanks for the good work your are doing. South B was once my home

It is sad to see the reduction rather than the increase of tree covers. The high rise apartments could also use designs that incorporate some planting area on each level since the don't seem to leave any room for any trees.

The middle class don't vote so the MCA's n Mps bring in their pple/tribesmen who will be their voters hence the informal settlements/slums. The total don't care att of the middle class is why so many estates are turning into slums.

Currently the planning in South B, South C and Nairobi West is wanting . population growth should be matched with quality infrastructure . The local government should introduce a parks ,recreation and landscaping department to work on the external Streetscape of urban Master plan requirements . The zoning department should work on smart cities and implement zoning that is human centric including walking and jogging footpaths ,bike paths ,motorcycle, cars, public transit and later light rail . Every new development should be subject to public participation and neighborhood participation before approval . Some urban areas in Kenya that have a master plan that is being implemented include Kisumu and Homa-bay based on UN reports . Dirty cities are a turn off.

I don't have a problem with kibandas because people have to make a living somehow. I would allow anyone to put up a structure along my fence provided they keep the place clean. But I have a big problem with how they look.Most are Ugly af. I think kiosk owners can build better looking ones or maybe we should have a national kiosk code😅

Sure they aren't looking good but that narrows down to the financial situation of those setting up those kibandas. I guess all the kiosk owners are the ones who cut down the trees. Too many trees less parts and even the new high rise apartments are not planting trees, and we just hosted the climate conference. Sorry, I keep talking about trees. I just don't understand why we have fewer trees with all the awareness that was promoted by Wangari Mathai. Being around the equator should make want to plant more trees.

South B, South C and Nairobi West were originally planned as Mixed income developments and were a success . South B was well planned and had two local schools, Nairobi South Primary predominantly Indian and Our Lady of Mercy mixed White and Indian and later immediately after Independence the schools admitted Black students .The schools stayed mixed for most of South B post Independence history but White students had mostly left Our lady of Mercy by the 80s .
@papd3532

Both schools were mixed Black and Indian by the 80s with South B still having a sizeable Indian population . By the 70s the city council of Nairobi introduced Mariakani primary school which served mostly low income students of South-B including the neighboring slums of Mukuru Kayaba and later Plainsview primary which Served mostly middle to high income neighboring Golden gate and Plainsview . Highest Income students in the area outside of Plainsview attended some local schools and private schools throughout the city .

South B was being turned into a slum. The somalis are changing the area just like they are doing with Eastleigh. If Somalis lived in Mathare and Kibra the entire place would change. But what we have in these slums are githeri slum loads who just put up structures not even inhabitable by animals and charge an arm and a leg. They come with no toilets just one room which acts as your bedroom, sitting room, kitchen, no running water, no toilet. At least the somalis build decent livable housing with all amenities and improve the area. Next you will see a huge mall like BBS. Thats how they do it.

Unable to develop Somalia they only succeed in torelant peaceful and prosperous countries like Kenya and South Africa, but not in Somalia their motherland.

@@user-tk6lc8zv9c Well they don't want peace. Maybe they just don't want to go back. So they decide to settle in Kenya. There's a lot of Somalis coming back to Kenya, that is, those who left as refugees for Europe and America. Instead of developing their country, they bring their dollars and pounds in Nairobi. Also, Somalis with money from Somalia are moving to Kenya. Obviously Kenyans can't compete with that.

@@user-tk6lc8zv9c They always say they are successful because they work together. Indians too work together, but the difference is Indians never get hand outs. Immigration really benefited Somalia probably why there's still no stability. Getting support from Europe and America as refugees/ asylum seekers enabled them to get free housing, free food, free Healthcare, so whatever money they got, they saved and sent home (eastleigh). That is why in 3 decades, they have grown this fast.
