That garbage guy is one of the coolest dudes in Heidelberg. He's always smiling and in a good mood, he and the others keep Heidelberg super clean, and he even attached a bicycle bell to his garbage truck, so when people are in his way (which is like ALL the time) he doesn't have to honk a loud and nerveracking horn. Such a cool guy...

Idk why your video was on my explore page, but I'm from Heidelberg. Feels good to see, that you and your family enjoyed it! Btw here's an urban Legend about the Castle: On the main door, theres a really heavy and big chain, and since the opening of the castle, a King once said: Whoever can bite this Chain, with nothing but his Teeth, then the castle will belong to him. Everbody tried it, but most of them broke their jaw. So, a Witch came and tried it, somehow she did alot of Damage to that Chain and left behind a mark, but after that, she lost her teeth. If you've seen it, thats the legend to that mark on the Chain. :)

*Mark Twain* about Heidelberg:„The Castle looks down upon the compact brown-roofed town; and from the town two picturesque old bridges span the river. Now the view broadens; through the gateway of the sentinel headlands you gaze out over the wide Rhine plain, which stretches away, softly and richly tinted, grows gradually and dreamily in distinct, and finally melts imperceptibly into the remote horizon. I have never enjoyed a view which had such a serene and satisfying charm about it as this one gives.“

I love American (I assume) distance estimation like that. It seems like it doesn't seem far to you, but I suppose europeans perceive distance differently. I live in Hamburg, and more than once I've been told something like "We're planning a trip to Berlin, we'll totally visit you for a day! It's pretty close, right?" I mean... is it close? It doesn't feel close to me, but Americans are used to much greater distances, I guess, so to you it may be close. To us it's halfway across the country.

Your mom is simply adorable (and she doesn't seem too american... she can even drive our cars!) and your brother is so cute and sweet (and soooo american!) but he touches everything... he needs to be handcuffed! I don't know what happened in that castle, but surely you couldn't find lions fighting against gladiators since it was built in medieval times (1200-1300)... and gladiators belong to the times of ancient Rome... so about 1000 years earlier! Americans don't know anything about the rest of the world (geography, history, politics, culture, languages)... this is so sad! By the way, you have a beautiful family and it's nice to see you hanging around together. This video is a lot better than many others because everything's so natural and spontaneous. More videos like this, simplicity is the best!

'Servus' is actually old Latin (you know, from the time of the Roman empire) and it stuck around in the Germanic countries. It literally means 'servant', the word 'serf' is derived from it as well. Lower class people used to greet the nobility with it. like: 'at your service' But in modern times it is used as an informal greeting , it no longer has the stigma of the master-servant relationship attached to it.

Your mom is super cute and in awe and curious about everything! Love her! Your brother, no offense, is a bit too American and oblivious to it all :) Heidelberg is the birthplace of the Swedish Queen! :) (I'm Swedish :) )

Gladiators and Lions are a very typical thing for the Roman Empire and the Roman Empire collapsed around 350 AC. I have no idea when the Heidelberger Schloss was build but it looks like it was build somewhere in the middle ages (1000 until 1500 AC). So, wrong country (the roman empire is Italy and the territories it had conquered) plus very different century with a difference of at least 700 years or more. The gladiator and 🦁 Lion thing is very typical for the Colloseum in Rome. Most cities in Germany never had buildings like the Colloseum, even though cities like Köln and Trier had a very large contingent of roman soldiers living there. They were called Colona Agripina (Köln) and Augusta Treverorum (Trier). Trier is actually the oldest city in Germany and was founded over 2000 years ago approximately 16 before Christ (BC) by the romans. So Trier was founded at a time shortly before Jesus was born. It is the only city in Germany, that I know of, that actually has an arena that is called "Amphitheater". It was build by the Romans in 200 AC and has a roman festival once a year in august during which there are gladiator fights. Trier by the way has 2 very interesting things if you are religious. The grave of apostle Matthias is inside a church in Trier and seemingly the linen clothes that Jesus was wearing shortly before he got crusified are in Trier. It is called: "Der heilige Rock" translated it means the holy skirt. It looks like a linnen dress.

Guys, the wooden barrel you show in the video is the small one just in front of the entrance which leads to the actual huge wooden barrel...

I visited Heidelberg in January 2019. I climbed up that very steep path that led to the Heidelberg Schloss. In January it was covered in snow and ice, which proved quite a challenge for me as I am in my mid fifties and I was worried about slipping. 😮
