I like to think of Namira a bit differently. Namira is my favorite daedric prince. She’s so complex and mysterious. But my love for Her aside, I have a really hard time figuring out why She’d have ANY worshippers. Well, maybe a few insane sorts who love rolling in trash or eating maggots, never bathing, and wearing pre-ripped denim. Whatever. I just think almost no one would revere Her. Even people with very icky, taboo inclinations… who would want to worship Her when She does nothing for you but maintains your grossness? So I like to think of her differently. (Especially since her realm seems relative to whoever seeks it. After all, would a bosmer find cannibalism inherently disgusting?) If you’re someone who has natural interests, inclinations or instincts that your culture or society condemns, if you feel othered or alone, like everyone judges you cruelly… She is one one who comes to you with words of acceptance. She soothes your anguish by insisting that yes, your people reject you, but She doesn’t. She thinks those parts of you that keep you up at night are exactly what makes you *you* . She sees your darkness, your flaws, your abnormalities and blemishes… and tells you that you are Perfect. That you need to embrace yourself as you are, as She does, not seek redemption or improvement. Because, to Her, you are wonderful. I find that much more seductive and intriguing. I can see why people would worship Her. It would definitely be a certain type of person, but it makes so much more sense. And that’s also how Enola tries to draw the Dragonborn in, with a sweet, seductive, consoling tone. Namira sees you. She accepts you. Just accept yourself, and She will bless you. But I dunno. That’s just me. 😅 Edit: To be clear, I am absolutely NOT saying that Namira is good or even kind. Far from it. I just love studying cults and the like, my favorite part of said study being trying to figure out just why people were drawn to them. Daedric Princes in TES are just an extension of that interest.

This channel keeps my love of TES going. Even when I take long breaks, these guys keep me coming back!

I find how the forsworn view Namira the most interesting

I really like the themes of Namira, like in reference to thanatology and taphonomy. The self sustaining cycle of decomposition and the like. Its a lot to wrap your head around and very challenging not just intellectually, but emotionally as well. It reminds me of movie Annihilation, which I'm a little obsessed with.

On the overlapping spheres discussion: I always have pictured the princes on a sort of gradient scale, bleeding into one another. Hermaeus Mora bleeds into, say, Azura, what with prophecy, who bleeds into Meridia, with the light stuff (and the "bitch energy" lol) etc etc. I find it's a nice way to help visualize those 'related' princes.

I have been wondering about Peryite a lot recently, his connection to Akatosh. They are both representative of dragons (by statues) and as taskmaster, he has the same role as a chief of the nine divines (possibly their taskmaster by his control of time) it would be cool if there is more about that.

I sort of imagine her as darkness but not on the physical sense. I mean, her realm might be physically dark too given that it's called the Scuttling Void, but for me personally at least, I liken her darkness to all things taboo. I think certain creatures are associated with her because taboo disgusts people much in the same way that those creatures disgust us. Cannibalism isn't the worst taboo IMO, but it's a very bad and serious one nonetheless.

Also couldn't you just get the disease blessing from Namira, get Porphyria, turn into Vampire, become immune to diseases, still have other 2 blessings, profit.

As someone who loves studying World Religion, Namira worship instantly makes me think of the Aghori, a cult of ascetic monks in India. They worship Shiva but they interpret their reverence from seeing beauty in that which society sees disgusting. They smear themselves with ashes from the communal funeral pyres, they eat some of the leftover bits.

Namira isn't a corner of the house of troubles, she's the basement!

There seems to be quite a few parallels one can draw between Namira and Dhumavati (from esoteric Hindu practices). Such as Dhumavati often portrayed as an old, ugly widow, and is associated with things considered inauspicious and unattractive in Hinduism. In ES, Namira is considered one of the oldest spirits in existence. Another parallel is the fact that Dhumavati is said to manifest herself at the time of cosmic dissolution (pralaya) and is "the Void" that exists before creation and after dissolution. Though another parallel can be drawn to Nirṛti: a Hindu goddess, personifying death, decay and sorrows.

It may be reaching, but you dudes made a good point, when Ejola whispers to you in the Markarth catacombs, the acoustics may relate to tonal architecture.

I loved the direction Scott was hinting at going towards but never fully did, Namira's connection to the Void and the concept(s) of Sithis and Padomay and if you dig just a little bit deeper and tap into your inner lore nerd, her possible connection to the Night Mother, yes the NIGHT MOTHER and her Dark Brotherhood. For years I've pondered the idea and I've seen it crop up quite a few times on several sub reddits and forums. IMO, her connection to Sithis, The Night Mother, and The Dark Brotherhood is far more interesting and IMO feasible than that of Mephala somehow being connected to Sithis, The Night Mother, and the Dark Brotherhood. The Dark Brotherhood is far more of a "Death" cult than a "Murder" Cult in terms of their Religiosity, if that makes sense. Returning souls to the hungering void who feels it is their rightful owner and such, sounds familiar? Cheers! Please leave your thoughts.

I know it isn't canon, but the Beyond Reach quest mod for Skyrim explored Namira a bit and gave some interesting implications through one of the npc's. You also go to the Scuttling Void, and it's full of gory displays and giant spiders sitting still on clifftops kinda peering down at the path you go through. There are some displays that are I guess copies of some of the Ayleid flesh arts. According to the npc, her plan seems to involve the adamantine tower, and I guess trying to sort of set up a way for one of the mortal culture's interpretation of Padomay to usurp the dreamer. The way I've been conjecturing about the whole repulsiveness aspect is maybe a bit too simple. Basically, when one is repulsed by something, they want to get away from it immediately. You might say 'create a void', or if you really want to reach, maybe 'stir the sithis/padomaic'. What set me on the idea was how the npc described the horrific displays throughout the Scuttling Void as 'spectacles' meant to grab attention. With the mod's worldbuilding, sort of and also that Namira never contacts you directly about any of her plans, it gave me a sense of dread I find sorely lacking in every daedric prince interaction between Oblivion and Skyrim. It was the first time I found a daedric prince scary lol.

Awesome video! :D I feel inspired to comment from my shared account (the picture isn't me, sadly)! Two things: 1) I'm not sure that Namira intends for the suffering she inflicts to truly be "good for you"; that's more Lorkhan's thing. Influenced by Lorkhan, Boethiah wants people to overcome their struggles, and Malacath wants his followers to stay outcasts but only so that they can be the strongest, whereas Namira wants her worshipers, like the Reachmen, the cannibals, or Weedle, to rationalize why they should not escape their perpetual suffering, or should persist in their repulsive or taboo behavior, by superficially appealing to their ego, claiming that they are "more worthy" or "exceptional" than others by continuing down the path they are on. The Reachmen are right to listen to Lorkh and use conflict as a teacher, but to appease Namira they take this to an extreme that keeps them stuck in a perpetual cycle of pain and suffering without any real hope of improvement, because Namira doesn't believe in "improvement": only corruption. 2) I wonder if you could do a podcast about Argonian mythology and cosmology at some point. I did a blog post analyzing the one Argonian myth that we have so far, which you are more than welcome to read here: elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Webspidrman/An_Analysis_of_%27Children_of_the_Root%27:_Revelations_about_T.E.S._Cosmology . The myth provides a lot of interesting insights into the Argonian worldview, and their creation myth differs more substantially from others than people give it credit for, especially in that "stasis" seems to be entirely absent and "change" ever-present. I thought I read in game Sithis is Chaos' (or whatever the other name is) aspect to learn itself , perhaps Namira is merely it aspect to Enact himself; as all of the things Not done, as he is described as all the information that isn't.

In oblivion many of the NPCs complain about the sounds and smells that come from Rosentia’s house in Leyawiin. I think it’s representative of Namira because of the indirect effects on how people perceive her.

In Leyawiin around town you can hear people talking about Rosentia Gallenus or whatever her name is and how her house smells like death and that they think something must be rotting. I think she describes the scamps as dirty and the like as well. I think that’s pretty Namira-esque.

Thinking of the most charitable interpretation of Namira. She is humility. To know that all souls are nothing, and to nothing they rightly return. The repulsive things of her worship are meant as signs for prideful life, for they believe they are better than the shit, the slug, the sludge, when this is all they truly are. Her cannibalism does the same: there is equality among all things, nothing is sacred, for it all comes from and goes to the same void. This is the death of pride, to remember that you too will one day be food for the things which crawl beneath your feet. Thus the lowly, the poor, the grotesque are well loved, for they are closest to their mother who is Nothing. A mother who seeks that all souls return to her bosom, the bosom of humility, made manifest in the effacement of the self. True freedom, true divinity, true enlightenment, comes from the death of the self. Like Lorkhan, to die to yourself that others may live. To sacrifice even one's own soul is the greatest of acts. To become nothing is to become pure spirit. This is why the elves will never attain divinity - they are proud, and hold themselves too great, denying in their every thought the fullness which they seek. I'd love to be an elder scrolls theologian. I love thinking of the daedra as things completely misunderstood by mortals. I think the suggestion about Namira having dominion over aetherius is more right on than they realize.

The 1st Era part of Namira's story is only important because Weedle was a Bosmer (the Bosmer Monarchy heralded the 1st Era) and last heir in line for anything of value from his royal house. meaning he would never amount to anything by playing by the rules. he expected a good bargain from Namira and kept begging her ceaselessly for the things he wanted. until he could literally not speak and plead from his dried-out throat. when Weedle was reduced to his most pitiable state she relented and gave him her blessings.

Knowing there is something about yourself that isn't good that you know about yourself. Fine. But one must control it keep it tame. Not fall into your vices. I'd say she's more of a test. Take Naruto at the waterfall of truth when he confronted himself. He had to accept that he had hatred. Had anger. But in excepting it. Also in not letting it control.

Reachmen namira cultists are sort of the ahgoris of the Elder Scrolls. Minus I guess the more extreme stuff like child sacrifice and murder.

If was an embodiment of the Void, I would encourage every being in existence to stop struggling and degrade and decay so that the existence would decompose. Like the thermodynamic death of the universe. I would want that. Because all this things existing and doing things is disturbing and I won't want to be disturbed in my Void.
