This scene haunted me when I was a kid, it just stuck in my head all these years.. the way he killed her behind the wall so you couldn’t see but you knew full well the horror of what he was doing to her...

It's because when Bill Sikes says "You can't come with me no further" Bullseye can sense that he's about to kill him too (as when people see Bullseye they know Sikes must be about) and makes a run for it. He flees not so much because his loyalty is wrecked but to save his own life. It's sad how Bullseye whines when Sikes is killed - he still loves his owner.

This is the perfect analogy for abusive relationships, when you think about it. It's sometimes bearable, and you decide to stick with it "as long as he needs me". but the worse things get, the harder it gets, until you end up dead. This scene is so sickening. Nancy didn't deserve this.

+Fox Teen I agree, she is wonderful and not a henchman of Fagin's like Bill being Fagin's henchman. It's unknown whether she cares for her life or not because she did sing a song called "It's A Fine Life." But yes, she does care for Oliver's life since when Mr. Brownlow decided to adopt Oliver, Fagin sent Dodger to go and get Oliver back with Nancy saying to let Oliver go so he can enjoy a good life with a family. The sweet part is both Oliver and Nancy hugging each other goodbye knowing they won't see each other ever again. (I remember when I saw this film in Elementary School, when all of us saw Oliver and Nancy hugging we all said "quick, go." Of course, if Oliver didn't hug her, he would have at least gotten at the top of the stairs or reached the bridge by the time Bill came).

You're spot on many victims like Nancy stay cause in an odd way they love their spouse and don't want to be alone even when they start to see the signs of controlling violent behaviour they are too scared to leave two women a week are killed by a current or former partner and could be the same for male victims and same sex relationships domestic abuse covers all types of violence not just with couples but parents hitting their children parents been abused by their children or attacking elderly parents I admire Oliver Read ( RIP) for playing such a horrific role and other actors and actress who have had to take part in something like this it's really heavy and disturbing to watch Xx

"Nancy didn't deserve this." Well, I beg to differ. If she had read her script properly she'd have known what Bill Sykes was going to do and she could have then made sure of her escape instead of loitering around at the bottom of the stairwell.

+Sean Naylor I think it was because Nancy saw a bit of herself in Oliver as a child, forced into doing Fagin's dirty work for him. She didn't want that for him, she wanted him to go back to his rightful family. She paid for that with her life, sadly..

In psychology, Bill Sikes is an example of a primary psychopath WITHOUT a narcissistic component. When he kills Nancy, he is initially surprised, then immediately worried about getting caught. He viewed Nancy as a means to an end - someone he could relax around and order around after pulling a job. He shed no tears for her and just wanted to escape the law in the end. No remorse. This was a strong scene in Oliver! (especially after the upbeat song bit prior to this)...

+Jaymes Warde I guess the only reason she was still alive with her legs moving when Bullseye was still there before Bill called him to come was because, she was slowly starting to die (since Bill hit her with his stick, I'm guessing that maybe he knocked her head off like a baseball bat where the rest of her body was slowly starting to die once her head was gone), then by the time Bulleye came back after he ran away from Bill, Nancy was completely dead without Mr. Brownlow and some of the towns men not knowing who killed her until seeing Bullseye knowing it was Bill's dog finding out that it was Bill who killed her and they used Bullseye to sniff out where Bill headed off too which Bullseye knowing he (Bill) went to Fagin's hideout. (Something tells me that Bill didn't mean to kill her since he looked nervous from 1:34-1:36 like he was saying "oh no, what have I done, I didn't mean it.")

@da96103 That was Mr. Brownlow. Also yes, I was confused as to why it took him so long to come down the stairs and he got to the bottom of the stairs when Nancy was dead. However, if I was Nancy, I probably would have walked up the stairs with Oliver to deliver him to Mr. Brownlow in person instead of saying "there he is, you see him, now go up to him quick" especially Nancy said she will bring Oliver herself to Mr. Brownlow where if Oliver came by himself, it makes it look like he escaped from Nancy and Bill.

@anguscastle3448 I agree. I felt sad when Bill murdered Nancy but, I was confused if she really was dead as to why her legs were moving from 1:44-1:48 unless she was slowly dying more and more and maybe by the time Mr. Brownlow came down the stairs was where she was completely dead. At least Bill got his punishment in return by getting chased by the townspeople being seen as a murderer and ended up getting killed himself. Also perhaps Fagin seeing Bill as a murderer persuaded him that it's not good to do crimes in life with Fagin being a thief which also persuaded him to turn a leaf over which he mentioned near the last scene of the movie.

I too have always found the death of Nancy so harrowing; she never knew her own worth as a warm and decent human being, despite the degrading poverty into which she was born; Oliver is really a love story about Nancy and Oliver--not sexual, but maternal; she risks [and loses] her life to save that little boy. One thing I love is how Bull's Eye plainly gets his fill of Bill Sikes and rats him out to the coppers. I saw in later years that Sikes tries to kill poor old Bull's Eye, too; bastard!

The novel adaptation I am currently writing, in which Oliver DOES save Nancy's life at the moment of truth, is very a much a love story about the two of them. @Jayne Eyre I prefer the film over the stage show simply because they moved Oom-Pah-Pah to the climax and made it a tool for Nancy to get Oliver out of there. It made the song much more powerful with a suspenseful edge. On the stage it opens act 2 and it's simply a tavern tune which I thought was kind of dull after seeing how it was used on film.

Nancy had a really good heart! She didn't deserve to die like that. If she and Oliver went up the stairs of the bridge, her death would be avoided. She was so close with Oliver and used her good intentions to bring him home until Bill Sikes shows up out of the blue and killed her while Oliver watched. If i was Oliver in that situation, i would run like hell up the bridge, instead of being taken by Bill AGAIN!

"Careful, Bill! Please, no violence!" -- This is quite different from the Fagin from the book. Honestly, I've always liked Ron's turn as Fagin. Although he's very much a scoundrel, he at least has a heart and a conscience. Nowhere nearly as psychopathic as Sikes.

Well, and this Fagin deserved a happy ending much more than novel Fagin. Whether on stage or in film, the Sir Carol Reed made him into a lot more of a lovable rascal than a true villain, a choice I totally dig.

Agreed. I'd rather have Fagin be a three dimensional lovable character rather than an outright baddie. The fact that he is horrified by Nancy's death and calls Sikes out for using Oliver as bait for an escape makes him redeemable IMO.

Turnajon He is never an outright baddie. Dickens created him as a sympathetic villain of circumstance who tragically is executed at the end. This is arguably one of the most accurate adaptations of the original character, despite the alternative happy ending.

The fact that this feels so horrific and graphic when, in reality, you don't see anything is a testament to how great this film is. Especially considering it follows such a bright and silly song as Oom Pah Pah, it shouldn't work as well as it does but everyone involved brought their A game and it's devistating

Sad trivia involving this scene: The director proposed that a Shirley Bassey play Nancy, a black Welsh singer, but it was rejected by Hollywood executives as Nancy is meant to be a sympathetic character and they were concerned audiences would not be as sympathetic to Nancy's death or her situation if her character was black given very heavy racial tensions going around. Very sad scene and sad background behind how it got to where it ended up.

I don't know why adults don't prepare kids for scenes like this; maybe they just assume all kids are used to scenes of extreme violence in movies and TV at an early age, so they don't think it will frighten them. When I first saw Oliver (at age 9), my older sister warned me about Nancy's death, and even then it still came as a shock. Even though you can't see it, there was something about it that was a lot more visceral than anything I had seen in TV cop shows, maybe because the horrible sounds Nancy makes as he hits her with his club, and the blood on his hands. Like you I couldn't quite understand why Bill did it either; the whole "code of silence" thing among the criminal class to which they all belong went completely over my head. I thought Bill was just angry that he was losing his new "assistant" for breaking into houses. But the reason was because he felt Nancy had betrayed him, as he couldn't trust Oliver not to talk so he knew letting him go back to Brownlow might mean a death sentence.
@sleepCircle
@sleepCircle Жыл бұрын
@Super Sharp Shooter the scene was based on a real murder that happenedd in the slums of england (known as the Shambles). charles dickens used to work for a newspaper, and this murder broke his heart. he couldn't understand what kind of person would beat a woman's head in like that and why, and he sort of dealt with it by putting the murder-in a way-into the book Oliver Twist. he never got over it, though, and it's what killed him in the end. he used to do live readings of his books and whenever he got to the part with nancy's death he got visibly upset and worked up. one day he was doing this scene and he had a massive heart attack and it killed him.

agreed. Sir Carol Reed is a genius for moving this song from the opening of the 2nd act (which is where it was on the stage) to the climax of the film and using it as a distraction to get Oliver out of there. Never has a jolly beer drinking song been not so jolly - at least for Nancy. A brilliant touch.

@l melnotfound While I'm sure she enjoyed singing the song "Oom Pah Pah", she only sang that song just to get everyone in the tavern to sing and dance around as a way to cover up so she could sneak Oliver out of the tavern. She started the song after hearing a bunch of men drinking their drinks singing the song and if she heard them singing while taking Oliver out of the tavern, she wouldn't care to sing it.

I LOVED Nancy when I was a kid and dreaded this awful (but brilliant) scene every time I would watch the film… watching it now as an adult makes it even more awful… 1 because I know the film so well, I start to get a sense of foreboding as soon as Nancy visits Brownlow, as that’s what led to it… and then at the beginning of Oom Pah Pah is when my stomach really starts churning as I know it’s coming very soon. When Bullseye starts to bark then it’s all over😢 every time I watch I’m still willing Nancy to not stop at the bottom and direct Oliver up the steps, then stop to hug etc, I’m silently willing her every time to grab Oliver’s hand and RUN like the wind to the top of those steps, to the relative safety of being beside Brownlow and within eyesight of probably many other people - my thought process being that Bill would have found it a lot harder to drag her off and beat her to death right there on the spot if she’d been at a height on the top of the bridge where they could both be clearly seen. 2. It’s all the worst now because I see now that Nancy did this KNOWING what was coming to her - she knew he wouldn’t let her live if Oliver went missing and yet she still sacrificed her life for the little boy because it was the right thing to do. 😢 3. The fact she didn’t actually betray him as he believed. Bill killed her not even knowing she’d protected him at all costs while saving Oliver. He killed her thinking she’d led the ‘law’ to him when in fact it was only him who did that to himself by killing her!! If he’d not killed her then no one would have been looking for him. 4. I know he would have been no match for the much more streetwise (and more practiced in violence) Bill, but come ON, how could Brownlow just stand there and watch another man beat a woman to death right in front of him? Especially knowing it was happening BECAUSE she had helped HIM save Oliver :( 5. Finally, I know it’s graphic but ughhhh… the physical details that we see and hear of the murder - Nancy is still screaming right up until just before the final blow. And even several seconds after he’s left, SHES CLEARLY STILL ALIVE. Did anyone else see the way her legs are still rattling as she lies on the floor?😢😢😢😢 horrifying. Nancy is my all time favourite musical character - she deserved such a better ending😢 if only Brownlow could have also taken her in, in exchange for her selflessness and bravery in returning Oliver to him… he could maybe have given her lodging in his house in exchange for hiring her as a cleaner or a nanny for Oliver or something… that way Nancy would not only have survived and reached a better life, but also she and Oliver could have kept the special bond they’d created… remember Nancy was the first ‘mother’ figure Oliver EVER had until that point, and the ONLY human being who had been close to him and genuinely cared about him with no selfish motivations :( :(

This is one of the stupidest actions ever performed by a villain. Apart from me rising in anger for killing a woman I grew to like, as Nancy was a very good pure-hearted woman, killing her caused precisely THAT what Sikes wanted to prevent. Being caught. Nancy was not allowed to bring Oliver back only because Sikes feared Oliver might reveal his hiding place, but by grabbing Nancy her final scream was heard and as she was found dying (the fact she still moves her legs and feet shows she was still alive when she was found, most likely not for long, as he beat her pretty bad) betrays the act of violence and led the people to follow him. Letting Oliver be may (even if Oliver did talk) have given him much better chances. Fear and desperation can be pretty bad advisors sometimes.

While Oliver loved Nancy so much and appreciated that she was taking him back to Mr. Brownlow, maybe Oliver should have quickly ran up the stairs to get to Mr. Brownlow while Bill was distracted beating up and killing Nancy where at 1:25, Oliver would have made it to the top of the stairs by then and Bill would have saw Oliver at the top of the stairs by then and then maybe said "oh no, he got away, let me pick the next kid in Fagin's hideout as the thinnest as my hostage" since the only reason he picked Oliver as a hostage because of him being the thinnest.

@afriendofbean
@afriendofbean 3 жыл бұрын
@@leahgarland609 Yes, that's what I mean that the main reason Bill chose Oliver for the job to break into someone's house was because Bill said that Oliver is very thin being able to fit inside the window easily. Perhaps also there's been History of Fagin's thief kids trying to break into that house and maybe if the person in that house saw Oliver, he wouldn't of known but when the person saw Bill Sykes, the cover was blown where the person probably thought Oliver was Fagin's henchman. However, after Bill murdered Nancy, he ran to Fagin's hideout carrying Oliver with him where the townspeople were led there by Bill's dog Bullseye where Bill still wanted Oliver as his hostage when Fagin told Bill to let Oliver go and Bill's response was "it's me they're after but they won't go for me and I want the boy so they won't" and still only wanted Oliver since he was thin when he could have chosen a different boy (as he was running towards Oliver, he ran through the other boys but never grabbed any one of them) but he still chose Oliver. Not only that, with Oliver being thin, he wanted to use Oliver to escape to make Oliver climb a beam to loop a rope over the beam so Bill could swing on it to escape but ended up getting shot.

I think this is definitely a cautionary tale for ANYONE in a very abusive relationship. If you don’t leave your abuser, then you’ll end up dead in the hands of your abuser just like Nancy. This scene gives a pretty tragic look into abusive relationships in general and that no matter how tormenting and abusive one can be to one another, there’s always something that keeps the other one coming back for more. People, if you’re watching this scene and you’re in an abusive relationship and you’re scared for your life, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE WHILE YOU CAN!! You all deserve BETTER partners who will love and support and treat you very well with kindness, understanding, compassion, empathy, comfort, reassurance, patience and most especially, respect. Don’t end up like Nancy. Be kinder and more gentle to yourselves and don’t tolerate or put up with ANY abuse from ANYONE. Abuse is MORALLY WRONG and nobody deserves to go through this.
