I remember this scene haunting me as a kid, yet I somehow remember it as being worse. Like I remember it as if you could hear Nancy scream for dear life, while you just see bill beating her.

Despite this film being made by a disgusting creep it's arguably the most disturbing, violent telling of the OLIVER TWIST story I've ever seen. Dickens would be proud and mortified.

@@Gardenofstardust the 1948 version is more accurate to the book but this one is probably more accurate to the dialog I’m only up to chapter 3 in the book though but I know monks Oliver’s half brother in the 48 version is in the book

Roman Polanski really has a vision. But yes. Too bad he’s a predatorial piece of shit. Breaks my heart because his Macbeth is also the definitive version. Oh, Nancy 😢

@@bluebilbo3559 Yeah I prefer the 2005 version because the cinematography in this one is just too damn good and it’s really atmospheric. The music and the set (London streets, clothing, social classes) is exceptionally good and captures the early Victorian times really good

The 1916 Silent film of Oliver Twist has Jackie Coogan playing Oliver. Coogan also plays Uncle Fester in the original Adams Family.

I'm going to watch all of the Oliver & Oliver Twist performances that I can find; rank them accordingly from lowest to highest, I guess. I started with: 1933, with Dickie Moore/Oliver, Irving Pichel/Fagan, Wm "Stage" Boyd/Sykes, Doris Lloyd/Nancy and Sonny Ray/Dodger.

We watched this scene in class, as Oliver Twist was on the English curriculum, and I just put my hand over my mouth for fear I might vomit. Poor Nancy deserved so much more. She was like a mother/sister rolled into one toward Oliver. Poor thing she looked so scared

I'll be updating this from time to time. Please feel free to add your comments about the main five characters, thank you. I won't be adding the characters/actors from the Silent Film Era. Tom Hardy made an excellent Bill Sykes. Even though I really like Newton and Reed's performances, their real life alcoholism and the way Gin is used so heavily in all of the films just as in Dickens' book . . . well, it really comes through that Sykes is a heavy drinker. With Tom Hardy's portrayal, Sykes really comes off as a truly violent and dangerous man. Both the Sykes and Fagan characters carry a cudgel which is a particularly heavy wouldn't stick or tree branch with a heavy gnarled knot on one end.
