Brace yourselves for a long yet very useful video!
We finally manage to get our hands on the much anticipated tire from Nankang, the new CRS and we put it to the test against the best of the OEM fitment tires, the Michelin Cup 2N.
For the simulation we are using our Porsche 992 GT3 as it currently is the only model from our fleet that has available OEM tire sizes.
Our car is equipped with Girodisc brake rotors, Winmax Endurance brake pads, Endless brake fluids and has a more aggressive track alignment.
Of course not being able to rent the track for ourselves means that we have to tackle our way around traffic and dive a little bit deeper into looking at the data to verify our feeling and check for consistency.
Thanks to www.circuit-days.co.uk for running a great event and hosting us during their trackday.
Like and subscribe if you want to follow the full journey and see how you can also make yourself and your car faster.

We've had the Nankang CRS tires in our country for a few years now. They are the best 200TW tires for in our time attack series besides the Yokohama A052. 23:00 Yes! Good observation - we find that most cars need to be set up with more negative camber to utilize the CRS to its full potential.

Another person made it past the 20 min mark!! WoW! Much appreciated! Interesting!! And is the version that you mention above the first or second iteration of the tire. Because if it was the first i would really like to hear how the v2 version compares to the A052 (which is also a great tire). Thank you for watching!

Constructive comment: PLEASE give exact numbers. You speak it was 2 bar on the CUP2, went up to 2,5 2,8 so this is not what they recommend. But you never mention in the video what is the recommended by the manufacturer. This was at least 3 times in the video, this and that is recommended by the manufacturer but you don't share the data WHAT was the recommended. Questions remained: What is the operating temperature of the CUP2? What is the operating temperature of the CR-S? (Same like th AR-1? 70-105C ? ) Here at least it was said 2 BAR hot is the target. But wasn't meantioned rear and fron too? identifcal? The tire heat map on the right : green is bellow 70? yellow is bellow 90? and red is over 100? Also you mention you need to change the camber to add more. Yes but also didn't menstion from what , not a single mention what is the current setup sadly :D Thank you and please take it as constructive comment.!
@wdp_racing
@wdp_racing Ай бұрын
Hello Albert, thank you for watching and for your comment! We like people who are curious! Recommended tire pressures for the CUP2 on the 911 Porsche is 2.3F/2.5R. Operating temperature for the tires. Tried looking out for you for this information but couldn't find anything solid. That never really was our worry as it is not a deciding factor for purchasing any of these tires. Both of the tires, such as all the trackday tires are expected to be performing in varying countries, temperatures so the window of operation is quite wide in all cases. So much so that searching for something that can perform in lower or higher ranges would be looking for something really specialized. The color coding you are describing is exactly what you are describing in your text. Thsi is the coding our sensors are running. To our fault, the rear sensors were masked with tape over them (which is something we do to protect the lenses when the car is driving on the road) and that is why they are showing green all the time. This is also why we did not dive into temperature readings in this video. Last but not least, the alignment we were running on the car consists of -2.4F/2.0R camber. Hope this gets you covered for now and thanks again for watching the video.

Plus 1 for Goodyear R except we already know it will be slower. It does however stay way more consistent and lasts longer than cup2 so it’s overall the best value tire. Hope your test can incorporate those elements. Bridgestone Race is next level amazing but only fits 991 GT3 and a few other cars with smaller wheels.

Good vid, I like all of the tire reading and data analysis at the end. But wish you had been able to complete some tracks without traffic. And, for us in the states, a typical track day session lasts 15 - 25 minutes, or roughly 30 miles / 48 km, so a tire that can be consistent for that long would usually suffice.
@wdp_racing
@wdp_racing Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the feedback! I would say also here (in Europe) we do the same. I mean thinkin about it logically, you shouldn't really be out there wasting resources when you feel that the tires have started giving up and dropping in performance. The only reason why we set out to do those 10 laps was because we wanted to push both tires a little bit to their limit and see how they perform and how they wear beyond that. Otherwise we also would have stopped around the same mark. No real point going any further except if you are racing.

Very good information in this video. Do you know which one faster on track, AR1 or CRS? I love cup 2 or even cup 2 R, because they are the OEM tyres for GT3/ RS. But now I should try CRS.
@wdp_racing
@wdp_racing Ай бұрын
I don’t have an actual number to back up the feeling but the CRS sure feels more refined in the way it handles and also in the way to starts to wear. It definitely is worth trying and seeing where it sits for you. As I say in the video, it all boils down to what you are asking for from a tire and how you are going to use it. Thanks for watching 👌

Where do the CR-S V2 sit as far as sidewall stiffness to others? A052 is pretty soft (but not as soft as Cup 2), Yoko AD09's are really stiff with a 3rd ply high turn up belt, RE71RS from what I have heard of them, sit somewhere in between the A052's and the Cup 2's. The stiffer the sidewall, the less "springy" a tire is on the vertical axis and the more stable it feels in high speed sweepers and initial turn-in

Super video, thank you! Couple of questions please: Do the Nankangs really run much wider than their actual size? How is the width compared to the Cup2? Also for the GT4 putting CRS on the back would you recommend 285/30 (as rear traction is not really a problem) or 305/30(maybe rubbing in compressions)? Thanks!
@wdp_racing
@wdp_racing Ай бұрын
Thank you for taking in the pain of the 30 minutes and for being curious! In our GT4RS we are running AR-1 305/30 just because that engine can actually take advantage of the extra rubber but in the case of the GT4, and given how the AR-1 at least was a bit wider than the CUP2N, i wouldn't be afraid to try the 285 size. The difference we measure from the Cup 2N on the stock wheels of the GT3 are of 10mm at the front and 5mm at the rear. Wider for the CRS in contrary to the CUP2N. Hope this helps!

I'm looking to change my tyres this week on my Megane 4 RS Trophy-R (I noticed one at the start of this video...is that yours?) I only drive my car on sunny weekends, hard, up mountain passes. Would you happily fit the CRS if you were in my shoes?
@wdp_racing

The Megane shown in the video is not ours but we have plenty of experience with the car and feel more than qualified to offer our opinion! The CRS - like many other R-rated tires out there - would be a great fit for the type of use you are describing for the Megane. It will transform the way the car feels, the way the front end supports the car and the way the rear end follows the lead of the front. Being in your place i would definitely try a set on. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

@wdp_racing
@wdp_racing Ай бұрын
That is a very good point and as said in the video i really feel that it boils down to budget and what is your personal goal. If longevity is more then you will be definitely be getting your extra money back from the less often tire changes and also the extra kilometers you put down before needing to change them. And on top of that you will be having better cornering performance. It is kind of the same with brake pad selection. We always choose and go for endurance compounds which costs more than twice the money of a normal sprint pad, but in the end you get all of the money back by simply doing less work on the car and driving more.

Fair guess but not true :) The stickering on the car might indicate such thing and yet these tires were not! We are supporters of the Nankang AR-1 and we have been using it for our fleet because of its great value for money and grip as we are also using the Michelin 4S on a spare set of rims during rainy days for its superior grip in the rain as well as heating up properties. Thus the stickering.

Video started good, but turned 180 degrees towards the end. Instead of spending data analysis that much time, why not finding a track/day/trackday and compare the tires back to back with 2 perfect laps? This should take less time than doing this and will be more solid and robust. You may never know how prior corner effects the next one.. BTW CRS and Cup2 are not rivals..
@wdp_racing
@wdp_racing Ай бұрын
Thank you for your input! The data part would happen anyway, as we love more objective ways of comparing things. We also do feel that it was long but it was necessary in order to showcase what we wanted. Doing another trackday, on another day means double the costs on everything and again potentially not being able to put in a clean lap. And definitely wouldn't take less time! You are very right on the variability that changing a line prior to another corner brings and that is why we tried to minimise this by taking as many clean passes we could throughout all of our different laps. The ideal would be to have clean laps! We couldn't agree more to this! And thanks for watching!
