NAP SPITFIRE MAXX 100gr : Broadhead Test

This is a test of the 100 gr NAP Spitfire Maxx, 3 Blade mechanical.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 15.19 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.05” = 2.94 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.62” = 7 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.75" = 5.25 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.2 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 267 grams = 9.33/10 = 8.4 pts + Bonus & Edge Retention (9%, +34 grams = 9.32/10 = 8.4 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 17.57 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (7.25" = 8.06 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 32 layers= 4.57 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 14.15 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (9.5/10 = 11.4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (2.5/10 = 1.25 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (5/10 = 1.5 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+1 pt: mech flight forgiveness
+.34 pts max cut size over baseline
+1 pt no O ring
+1 pt Offset blades

It’s sad that NAP moved production to Taiwan. I have the American made versions and the new ones made in Taiwan. The US made versions are sharper out of the pack, deploy smoother and just look and feel higher quality. These were my go to head with excellent results in the field. I wish they would bring production back to the states. Great test as always, John! Keep em” coming!

The funny thing is. I picked up a pack of these for turkey last white tail deer season. Kept a few in my quiver for any turkey opportunities. Get out one day. Turkeys 60 yards out. Then a target buck shows up behind me 25 yards out watching the other deer and turkeys in the field. Didn't have time to swap the arrow. Let it fly, and it punched through. Definitely wouldn't be usable again, but it did a double lung perfectly the once. I had trifecta 125 fixed in the quiver for deer but never got to send one.

My dad shot a cow elk at 40 yards with his crossbow with one of these. He did not get an exit hole, and it did break a blade on a rib. It does fly really well.

Man, I get a lot of people telling me just the opposite :) I figured it's easier for people to speed that up or skip over it than for them to slow it down in viewing.

I like the fact that for 2024 you bought and use a crossbow for the accuracy section of your testing but by using the extremely heavy arrows you've dropped the velocity back down to compound bow speed so it doesn't show what a broadhead will do for the average person using a normal weight (basically what is supplied with the crossbow) arrow. The flight characteristics of broadheads can change dramatically with speed. Crossbow speeds of 360-475fps can take a very accurate broadhead in a compound bow, and turn it into a far less accurate/erradic broadhead from a crossbow. I've used all of the Spitfires including the MAX, and the cut on contact model, and all they make great holes in deer. However, all of them have a problem at 400+ fps staying in the closed position prior to hitting the target which causes accuracy issues especially at longer ranges. They also have all the issues common with over the top deploying broadheads. As a close in under 325 fps turkey head they'd be good, but I think there are better modern expandable broadheads on the market. I can no longer use my compound bow due to shoulder injury so I've used very fast crossbows for the last 10 yrs. I haven't used expandables on deer for awhile due to the inherrent design issues, durability, and inability for many to be used at very high velocity. I do use expandables for turkey occassionally and for small game/pest control as I have several left over from testing them several years ago.

Thanks Frank. My primary audience is compound bow shooters. So I use the crossbow for stability and accuracy--less human error. But I shoot them at compound bow speeds for most viewers. In the future, I'd like to do additional testing at typical crossbow speeds. But if and when I hunt with a crossbow, I'm using a super heavy bolt for extreme momentum conservation and penetration.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Love the testing you do. I've found that a total arrow weight (including broadhead) of 450-500gr at 400fps will break any bone and completely penetrate any giant whitetail deer from any angle. Even dual shoulders are no match for this set up out to 60 yards. I don't like to shoot farther at an animal than 60 due to the ability of the animal to move slightly after the trigger is pulled. It's not only the sound of the bow firing but also the sound of the broadhead on its way to the target that can alert them

Good video as always. I would suggest having your target level with your bow for all the tests so there is no downward energy on the broadheads. Maybe next year.

I try to do that as much as I can. The flight testing is only a drop of a several feet at 30 yds. But I don't have the option in my yard to make it level.

Used these once to sight in, fresh out of the package, the broadhead opened in flight and completely missed the target at 20 yards. This was on a bow shooting 385, short of the 400fps they were "rated" for. Hence why higher speed testing is imperative.

Yeah, those ratings are meaningless. Every crossbow has different levels of shock upon firing. So while one model of crossbow may be fine with 400 fps, another may not

I found the timing of this video funny since you and I were just talking on another site about heads for bears. It did not blow up when hitting the block. I've used the Spitfire, crossbow version and have killed multiple deer, turkey, and hogs with it.

Love the content John. I was wondering if you could go back and shoot all the good broadheads of the past through the crossbow? I would like to see how well they fly with less variables. I’m curious about heads like the trifecta and the tooth of the arrow and others you might still have. If it was just a video of those I think that would be awesome. Thanks for doing what you do.

Thanks Jake. I would if I could, but I no longer have them. I use up a whole pack on each test. But the flight results with the crossbow are very similar to the ones I did with the compound--just less human error.

All the NAP Spitfire’s I’ve purchased the weights were off by 10 to 15 grains for every head. I contacted the company and they told me there wasn’t anything they could do for me. Pissed me off honestly. I’ll definitely never buy from NAP again.

Held up to the cinder block better than expected but 32 layers in the card board shows how much a 3 blade over the top deploying mech head is trying to stop penetrating.

Have you ever reviewed the slatra fixed blade heads? They say they're tuned to fly like your field points right out of the box. Their durability by design looks questionable. Would love to see a video on those. Enjoy your videos very much sir! God bless!

John I really enjoy your videos, thank you for them. I'm not on any of the social media sites or I would ask this question on one of them. You may have already done this, and I missed it, but, have you, and if not, would you list "your favorite" broadheads, fixed, fixed cut on contact, and mechanical? I say your favorites because I don't think there is any way to definitively say best. So, based on your experience and preference, do you have a "favorite" head in each or any of those categories? After 44 years of bow hunting, I still find myself trying different heads and arrows solely because I haven't "tried that one yet" not because I'm unhappy with my current choice. Thanks Kevin. It's impossible to do a "best" or even a "favorite" as I hunt so many different animals, and I often use a different broadhead for different situations. My favorite mechs are Sevr and Hyde. With fixed, there are a lot of great choices: Exodus, Trifecta, Crimson Talon, Evolution DG, Bishop....just to name a few. The last vid I post each year ranks all the heads I've tested according to any criteria the view wants, as it's on an excel spread sheet. The link is in that last vid of each year.

Since you provide a final score/grade based on a consistent process, have you thought of having a 2024 leaderboard at the end of your videos? It would be nice to see how a new product ranks verse past videos.

That’s a good idea. The problem is that I complete and upload a bunch of them at a time, and schedule them to drop in the upcoming weeks, based on a myriad of factors. So they’re not all completed and uploaded in the order in which they were done-so there isn’t the ability to do that. But I do post the score sheet at the end of each year. The spread sheet from last year included all the heads from 2022 and 2023.

Thanks so much for all of your videos, they are hugely informative and show me a lot of broadheads I have never seen. And help me select them for hunting. For the flight forgiveness test would you ever consider using a field point, broadhead and crossbow? It is not a fair test comparing the flight a compound bow with a crossbow. Oranges to tangerines (or maybe i miss understood your testing)

He is using a crossbow for the flight test. Unlike a vertical compound bow, only a very small amount of tuning can be done to a crossbow, which lets us know if the head really "flies like a field point." I'm sure he'll chime in, but that is the part I really value in these tests, since I'm a very low tech bowhunter.

Well, I think there is more similarity than you might think. The crossbow is shooting at compound speed, around 300 fps. The comparison of flight with my compound is very similar. But this gives me a tripod and scope so less human error.

I’ve been trying to watch all your videos on mechanicals to see what the best mechanical is based on your testing. I think out of all broadheads reviews and testing you do the best. What mechanical has the highest score or you feel is the best all around?

You mentioned that the offset of the blades may provide some flight rotation. How do you think they would work with left offset / left helical vanes? It seems they may fight each other? May work better with right helical. I am thinking of trying these or the g5 dead meat. I run left helical vanes. I am currently using rage hypodermic heads and would like to try some 3 blade heads. I value your input, your recommendations??? Thanks, and keep up the awesome testing!!!

Yeah, you want all that to line up the same way. There are a few companies making heads now that are offset, but you can choose which direction to offset them. It’s to fix the exact problem you are raising. I have a few of those tests, coming out in the weeks ahead.

I’ve shot a good # of deer w this head. The new version has a solid CoC tip (not the old inserted blade) and I quite like it, even more than the trocar. What is your process for spin/ head wobble? Will you mess w it at all to try to get to spin true?

I think to get maximum benefit a heavier draw weight would be better like 70+#’s? And maybe 50-75 brass inserts. Probably need to assume this one is a one or two use head before new blades are needed. 👍👍👀

Yep. The problem with "one and done" is when do they get "done?" If it's inside the animal, that's a problem, as it affects penetration and lethality.
