A family member was diagnosed at age 8 as NPD by a well-respected Psychiatrist. That family member is a full blown narcissist now. I believe it is inherited and I know that is not the the belief of many. I come from a family full of them and I’ve heard stories of past relatives being NPD. Dr.Ramani has been so helpful to me. Most of my friends have not dealt with this complexity. It’s a lot to unpack, but there was light when I finally understood the syndrome and distanced myself from the afflicted. They are not “normal” people. That’s hard to accept.

The concept of breadcrumbing became so clear to me when i realized that i call my cats pretty at least 5 times a day. And i still remember that 1 single time that my mum called me pretty. No wonder i didn't even mention that my ex never called me pretty.

I’m going through custody with a covert malignant narcissist, he treats the kids like possessions and only cares about winning and not what’s best for them. It’s infuriating and scary that I have to rely on strangers to see through his bs and lies. Ugh. He sucks 🙃

He took all my Jewellery and Watches, which were gifts from him over the years because we are getting a divorce so he said I don't deserve that because he knows that how to hurt me.

So we can't diagnose them because they are not present, but the liklihood of getting them to be present is pretty much zilch. Something needs to change here. Thank god for Dr. Ramani for being the one speaking out about this. I have learned so much from her. She is an absolute godsend.

My mom is at least 3-4. I can't say about her parents and I'm not convinced she has any actual empathy. She's sooooo nice and does sooooo much and you know if you need anything she's the one to talk to. Except she can be very emotionally invalidating. And no one would ever believe me if I said she hurts me everytime I try to express my feelings.

One of my favorite parts transcript: First Steps "I would say therapy would be very important and to be self-aware in therapy. Interestingly if the average person went into therapy and said “Hey, therapist, I think I’m narcissistic and I want to work on it”, the therapist probably wouldn't believe them because they'd say “Well, nobody would ever admit to it”, right? So, I almost tell people “Don't say that part of it. Talk about the patterns in your life that are raising concerns.” The second thing I’d say is: You need to learn to become self-aware, self-reflective and mindful in everything you do. Every time you open your mouth, before you do it, even if it feels like you're in one of those delays where the words don't match up to the mouth, but every time stop catch yourself and ask yourself: -- What I’m about to say, could this hurt the other person? -- Am I being very clear and am I accounting for their point of view? And only then should you speak. And when you're feeling angry find new ways to regulate. Say: -- I’m just going to take a little walk. Or: -- I’m going to run on the treadmill. Or: -- I’m going to do my breathing exercises. You don't get to rage at other people anymore. You learn to wait in lines. You don't yell at grocery store clerks. You learn to get that contempt under control and stop thinking you've got all the answers and everyone else is more stupid than you. You learn to empathize and you practice that empathy a hundred times a day. Those are the steps you have to take."

Exactly, I came home and the place was redecorated, there’s a computer on the table, a television in the corner, and lots of new pictures on the wall, plus everything was reorganized! Except it’s all from rent to own!

I felt all those things while I was still with my narcissistic husband. I got so over him years before I left the last time. I played his game and played it well. I waited until my children, I say my kids because one of his favorite quotes was none of those little basturds belong to me. They are dangerous.

What I find interesting is that although I didn't know my ex was a narc but in our fights especially when I wrote to him during our many break ups I mentioned all the signs that Dr Ramani is saying are specific to narcs. I told him he had them and should stop and treat me right with respect and he wouldn't of course. But at that time I thought a NP was this very dramatic type of personality that only someone like a dictator would have and we'd never meet a narc in our life bc we only interact with ordinary people.

If you plan to leave make sure it's a solid plan. I remember I left my friend said there is was a place at her house for me if I left. So I left and called her and she said you know all I've got is a broom closet and my boyfriend's got certain routines I just don't think it's possible right now. .... My god given was so devastated, I had to go back to narcissist and I also was so let down and rejected by my so call d friend. I was devastated. You find out who your friends are at times like these...

@@talita8882 thank you yes. The minute I realised i couldn't rely on anyone I started to get real and realised that anything I could do on my own was more beneficial than being constantly disappointed by other people. If you are lucky enough to have real, close, caring friends that's brilliant, but if you were like myself and realised your friendships were not friendships it's best to seek out a therapist who specializes in narcissist abuse recovery or go to domestic abuse groups for support.

Love Dr Ramini... you should explore getting Rick Rosenberg, who wrote "the Human Magnet Syndrome." He'll explain why there's a natural attraction between the narcissist and the empath, and why it always fails. Very fascinating & I presume he'd love to join your show. Craig Malkin might also shine some light on the topic.

Love Ramani, good show, first time listening to the podcast. I dont have a problem with narcassist. I have a dark triad personality, but narcassist are so easy to manipulate if you want too....The problem is a lot of you ppl are "warm empaths" and your empathy gets taken advantage of. I actually wish I had that warmness, its better than being cold.
@JesusForgivesAllSins
@JesusForgivesAllSins 3 жыл бұрын
You can have that warmness but also add wisdom and self control. The Bible gives us all kinds of wisdom especially in the book of proverbs. Ask God (Jesus) for wisdom too.

Over 25 😭?? My current boyfriend/ex is extremely narcissistic and he’s 23. I doubt he’s going to change in 2 years. This is the part where it’s giving me up “is he going to change actually??” But no I have to remember he’s treated me like dirt for 2 years that’s not a mistake that’s character
