As narcissistic supply waxes and wanes, the narcissist goes through cycles: a depressive phase is followed by hibernation for recuperation purposes and then the emission of a "narcissistic signal": a call for new narcissistic supply.

Narcissists are very charismatic and charming. Usually, you don't know you are dealing with one till they stab you in the back, or do sabotage you.

Noticed these cycles and in the early stages asked the covert narc I was involved with if he suffered with Bipolar because he presented as having a manic episode. Then with continuous gaslighting, triangulation, silent treatment and narc rage whenever he was called out on his pathological lying I realised that he’s a covert narc.

When I was going through my divorce from my now ex husband I found Sam's web site and ordered his book. Sam's book is a text book on what I dealt with for 21 yrs of my life. I wonderd how they became their prey but now it all made sense when you go through this down to a T. He was plotting and planning, from one manic phase to another, highs and lows...and planning for the next new narcissitic phase. It is all one big drama and a grand theatre production of falsified life.. It is hell being a narcissist. Living dead..

It seems like many narcissists have a contradictory disdain for “flattery” which proposes that “narcissistic supply” is more nuanced than “flattery”. Narcissists seem to even require that one’s flattery meets their rigorous standards to qualify as “narcissistic supply”.

I THOUGHT I WAS bipolar, how I could be happy one minute mad the next, ect. I took time to start realizing that the changes were happening from outside things I could blame such as my diabetes being bad, or someone not texting me back, or slowly fading from my life. I am a narc and I hate it. I am getting help today, but it is so funny how I never knew I was A Narcicist, I knew something was wrong. Then I asked myself today, how much time I spend thinking about myself and my problems and how I wish I was rich and the want to be a doctor and have success to low key show others who left me the bad choice they made. I am a Narc, I hate it, I've tried journals, video diaries, and thinking they would help, they only helped to show who I really am, and what I really am, and now I am getting help.

It is amazing how the descriptions that I have read so aptly describe the N in my life. You will always be confused if you try to make sense of these people. Think of it this way. These people will make it their life mission to hurt you. You are the worst thing on the face of the earth. They demean and belittle you. When it suits their fancy they will show you a little affection. The anger and rage never goes away. It is in the shadows waiting to again, raise its ugly head.

The behavioral and emotional similarities between bipolar and narcissistic mania & depression make me think we should more scientifically seek some neurological component contributing to the n's issues - a mood regulation disorder, perhaps. His emotional wounds yield poor self-image so he needs encouragement and is hurt by criticism, but that's true of most people. The N's extreme sensitivity, emotionalism, and long depressions might reflect being an HSP with mood disregulation issues.

The outside developments that cause the Narcissist to react and become sad, etc. ("splitting"), could not this also then cause a biochemical response? The emotion becomes so deep, that it seems to colorize their thoughts in other areas, whether subtle by their decorum or not. Their speech, thought patterns and even maybe their voice are strongly effected. Also, it's onset is so abrupt, that it makes me suspect there is a chemical aspect to this at least in response to the outside stimuli.

I'm not sure if my husband is a narcissistic, but I do think the cycles are macro with fast micro cycles within it. I thought he had a potential mood disorder because of severe swings. Since listening to your videos, I am questioning what I thought. His moods are always my fault (he tells me that), and these are the micro cycles that spike and drop leaving me baffled and dumbfounded. Also, when I get the mysterious silent treatment and cold shoulder, he hums. The humming feels like a looming darkness that I can't translate. I thought it could have been hormonal, he does have crohns disease. But, the thought that he tells me I'm responsible for his moods is bothering.

how do narc personality types compare to other types? how does a 'healthy' person live internally? just a matter of trying towards a way that is awareness and well-being of self, and others as part of that, respecting your and others boundaries unless self or others risk harm (inc harm to personal sovereignty - ask how to help not force someone to do what you think), not looking for the anxiety/rush spike but a more even keel (joy from exercise not petty masochism etc although I find exercise a chore so the line is blurred), accepting there will always be a struggle to manage yourself. Or turning down the silly witterings of your mind and just try and feel your way in the moment, think about what's in front of you with well-being glasses on, sticking to this approach in the face of abuse. Or continue to disassociate into oblivion, create a persona that does the outward function of all of these things until you sort of but don't become it. There are worse things to sort of not become. Watch out for your naughty self! Best trick of the devil is convincing you it doesn't exist! Although science please.

Pathological narcissism is a reaction to prolonged abuse and trauma in early childhood or early adolescence. The source of the abuse or trauma is immaterial - the perpetrators could be parents, teachers, other adults, or peers. Pampering, smothering, spoiling, and "engulfing" the child are also forms of abuse - see these: vaksam.tripod.com/narcissismglance.html vaksam.tripod.com/npdglance.html vaksam.tripod.com/journal42.html metapsychology.mentalhelp.net/poc/view_doc.php?type=de&id=419 Narcissistic and psychopathic parents and their children - click on the links: groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/narcissisticabuse/conversations/messages/4727 The Genetic Underpinnings of Narcissism vaksam.tripod.com/journal43.html

Is it common for a person with Narc traits, whether full NPD or not, to be labeled as Bipolar? Person I refer to did show clear signs that you describe in this and many videos but when seeking Mental Health help the male adult was always labeled as Bipolar in early treatments but the person does not normally continue treatment once back into manic or idyllic times and has never stayed on mental health meds for more than six months.

@samvaknin Wait a second Sam! You are my favorite Narcissism expert/ author etc, but wait just a second! I respect your opinion, but I need some clarification in what you mentioned in the beginning of this video, please help me to understand what you mean! From my understanding, In Bipolar disorder the internal biochemical changes in a bipolar person’s brain and nervous system are also triggered by external events! This is why it’s so important for someone with bipolar disorder to avoid stress, to eat balanced meals , to sleep regularly etc. Bipolar individuals are also notorious for reacting to significant life events and or trauma by going into either mania or depression, mania is a biochemical internal state of imbalance as well as a psychological defense mechanism to external triggers, is it not? As you say, psychology is not a perfect science or a science at all, but more like a philosophy, correct? ...and these labels are subjective, every narcissist and every bipolar person experiences their disorder differently, but would you say that both disorders are relative as far as being learned behavior, coping mechanisms, deeply ingrained automatic responses to trauma and stress? From my previous understanding, and from what I’ve gathered from researching bipolar disorder, I don’t think bipolar disorder has its origin only in physiological biochemical internal imbalance, but often also the imbalance rather is caused or trigger by, or perhaps the body’s achieving a state of mania or depression is triggered by and or switched on by external triggers whether those triggers are perceived directly or subconsciously . I’m bracing myself for your response, go easy on me Sam. You are my hero, don’t hurt me too much. I still have many more questions for you after this! 😁

Sam Vaknin I absolutely agree with what is written here! My questions specifically has to do with what you said at around 1:30 in this video. You said that the bipolar reacts to internal biochemical changes in the chemistry of his brain . I agree with that also, but wouldn’t you say that those biochemical changes in his brain are not always an isolated process, that that biochemical change is or can be strongly influenced by, switched on by, induced and or triggered by external events? In the way you differentiate the two disorders, how likely is the possibility of comorbidity of both disorders in the same person, or rather in the same personality presenting at the same time? This is groundbreaking to me, you have shattered my grasp on and understanding of bipolar disorder(or broadened and strengthened that understanding ) ! Thank you Sam!

That one narcissist that always ignores you when you talking about others. while he is looking at something else totally ignoring you. Or that one narcissist that always reflects everything that happens to you all anout them. Are they spiritually dead inside?

Deedee Neri I know my estranged Narc is an Atheist. Im spiritual, meaning that I dont worship any god per se however I asked him if he believes we have a soul or spirit, he answered " I dont know". There you have it.

Alicia Smith you asked if he believes in God? What was his response?

Deedee Neri He is very intelligent and has spent the last twenty years studying Religion, Theology, The Bang theory AND the Human Evolution theory. He refuses to believe IN anything that does not have a supporting fact to say it's true , including God. Hes educated in both Science and Evolution as he follows Steven Hawkings and Christopher Hitchens bc they are his idols. He can't believe in any" faith" principle because the definition of faith is to believe in something that has no proof to support the matter. He just won't allow many contradictions and the stories that are falsely written, inhumane lies or and the forbidden parts tgat go untold in the bible. He says Religion is why the world is at war ( which I do agree with) and corrupting. People are scared so they conform to social norm and they rather be " brainwashed" to believe that God created the THE UNIVERSE, while God sacrificed own flesh and only son in order to free the the world from any deadly sins, torture, distorted and maliciously sickened people who are not responsible for anything. He DESPISES THE FACT that a God could allow his son to be slaughtered forsaken everyone. If he was a God, the creator of the universe, he wouldn't NEED to sacrifice his son. "A God" COULD have chosen to free everyone including Jesus and give forgiveness to everyone. He $?doesnt know or ever talked to someone so he wont believe in heaven or hell. He just hates how people are exposed to leaders in religion or cults and how it has never united the people and its only destroying the world. I BELIEVE this as well. I asked if he was God? ( sarcastically stated) He believes in anything that is rationally and intellectually explainable as he said he would think most people have a mind of their own but are too conditioned to conform outside of this. I am agnostic. I dont know if there is a God or not. I DO BELIEVE there's a higher source or power as we are energy BEINGS, made up of matter, atoms, molecules and energy so I'm still learning. IM AN EMPATHIC AND COMPASSIONATE SOUL nothing close to a NARCISSIST. Notice the small piece that look like the NARCISSISTIC beliefs about the world yet it's a denied part if his inner world.

Alicia Smith If he doesn't believe in God then he doesn't belive in love bc God is love. Perhaps he needs time on his own . He needs to go through trials & tribulations and be convicted. WE can talk til we are blue in the face. They won't listen until things happen to them to where tgey seek God on their own with their own heart. I'M sorry you are going through all this. But if you remain faithful & forgiving despite what he did perhaps you can be the one to show him a true example of what God's love looks like.

@@Zer0.-_ Are you actively trying to gain attention via uncontrolable hateful outbursts? You are like an immature 2 yr old who has no control over his own mouth. You gain nothing but to add to your own judgement on Judgement Day! So keep it up ! Lol
