Asalamualaikum. Today's video is on the topic of marriage and the behaviours and characteristics that narcissistic muslim men in particular tend to display. I hope this serves as a reminder for us sisters to choose our husbands carefully.
This list is from experience and just because a man may have one or two of these traits does not make him a narcissist. The idea is to look for these signs as a whole and make an informed choice when selecting a spouse.
May Allah protect us all from falling into the hands of these who may abuse or harm us, ameen.
If you have any other signs from your experience, please feel free to respectfully share in the comment section so that other sisters can benefit.

We need to normalize divorcing these type of men instead of shaming women who are trying to protect themselves. I know plenty of women who are married to very toxic men but refuse to leave in fear of being ostracized by their family.

My Ex literally ticked off every single thing from the Narcissist characteristics list 🥴 and he would often weaponise Islam to justify a lot of it, even though that is NOT what Islam is or intends to advocate. I just wish I stopped giving him so many chances and left sooner. Wasted a good portion of my life, academics, emotional energy, health and more, BUT learned an incredibly important lesson. I cannot control others; my peace and safety starts with me and it comes with drawing healthy boundaries AND STICKING TO THEM.

@@miriams3769 getting married to a women who's knowledgeable than one shouldn't be difficult or should not be something bad or repulsive cos we learned from our righteous predecessors that they even married a women who was their teacher and it doesn't turn them to less than a man and it doesnt make her disobedience or disloyalty. Must it be that we have to marry a women who doesn't have knowledge about the deen so we can shape (manipulate) like a clay? The words shape isn't even the right words to used here. A wife isn't like clay in the hand of kid. A wife isn't someone we can manipulate or used like clay just cos they want to fulfill one of the sunnah of the Prophet (marriage). Was it Imam Ibn Kathir daughter whose father gave to one of his student. The student always come to Ibn kathir feet to sit and learn and he got married to Ibn Kathir's daughter and it was reported that the daughter eventually take her husband in classes after their wedding. Knowledge makes someone better not relegate or retrogress and individual. Let's not sound overly patriarchal. Let's learn our Deen. May Allah grant all knowledgeable Muslimah out there a righteous well mannered husband who applies the teaching of the prophet in a just manner. may Allah save us from manipulating husband and wife.

Also want to say alot of the reason that narcissistic traits are so common in our men and community as a whole is that the men are never made accountable from a young age for bad behaviour. My ex mother in law has never seen her grandchildren and my ex husband has just gone on to get remarried and has no contact with his children. Zero accountability from his own mother and family. Very common in Middle Eastern and Asian men…as sons they can do no wrong…This is where it starts.

As an only girl living in a Muslim household with 3 brothers, this is the truest thing that I’ve ever read!! My mother literally SPOILS my brothers and treats them like infants who wear diapers and can’t feed themselves. (My brothers are 23 and 25 years old) She does EVERYTHING for them and they still treat her horribly and call her crazy, and talk down to her. She would always let them get away with hitting me, calling me disgusting and degrading words, when they hit me as a child and my mom wouldn’t even say anything to them, she would tell ME to stay away from them and that they’re just playing. She would ALWAYS make them the priority while treating me inferior to them.

@R Coffee Narcissists know what they do is wrong, and that’s why they go to great lengths to hide their abusive behaviors in public. Narcissistic personality disorder is definitely not enough to be considered legally or Islamically insane. It’s a personality disorder but it doesn’t distort your ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Also, the vast majority of them are unable to change through therapy according to psychologists. As for living life and making mistakes, everyone does so. That’s why everyone may occasionally hurt their spouse’s feelings. The problem becomes more serious when that person refuses to apologize, does not repent for their actions to Allah, and repeatedly does the same thing without remorse.

Ya Rabb, this video is such a blessing and matches very much with my "still husband". At the beginning he seemed to be so pious and good mannered, I really felt he is my other half I was always looking for. What an idiot I was🤣🙈 "Gaslighting"... never knew about that until I married him. As every human being I'm not perfect and of course I have mistakes, but one thing for sure: I lower my eyes in front of men. But EXACTLY this is what he is ALWAYS telling me: You're looking at men with lust! You are looking at their private area, you're searching for some attractive men!" and so on. Oh God, how it made me tired and at the end almost questioning myself because I indeed do not look or search for men. 🤨 He is such a big liar, I never met someone lying that much like he does! Plus changing his stories after some days into other stories. Changing facts into different facts and making me believe I didn't listen well enough and or I was trying to change his spoken words. 😐 Alhamdulillah that I have kids who also made their experiences with him and told me that he is changing every few days from a "nice" person to an evil person. Sisters, it's IMPOSSIBLE to have an objective discussion with someone with narcissistic characteristics! You will nothing than LOOSE! Because he is always right, he is always the one who tried his best and you are the unthankful wife who is inpatient. He swears and lies right into your face and into the face of others. He has such a big phantasy, he is creating stories that you will think "what the **** is wrong that he meets always bad persons who are hurting him?!" 🤔 It's ALWAYS him who is the poor victim, ALWAYS! And it's always YOU and the others who carry the fault. Even if others witnessed what really happened he will swear by Allah and change the facts until the story fits to his "imagination". He is too lazy to work and prefers to live on my costs. Although he is an Arab, he doesn't hesitate to behave like a tick and suck on my money! He isn't and wasn't ever responsible for me, it is me who paid for everything. And still he ordered me to ask him for permission before I leave the house! 😅 If he doesn't get the attention he wants, he provoces argues to get a reason to scream, insult, belittle and slap me. Then he takes all of his stuff out of my flat and won't be seen for several days. During this time he is waiting for me to call him and apologize for my bad behavior. 🤣 He never gave me my rights, he has no right over me at all! I now got divorced alhamdulillah, FINALLY! And I prayed a lot to Allah and was patient. Because when I fought for my rights, nothing happened. Then in this Ramadan I decided to leave it completely to Allah and He helped me out now. Allahu akbar.🤲🏻🤲🏻🤲🏻 Sisters, I could write a book about what I went through. Please STAY FAR AWAY from this mad sort of men! May Allah protect us all Allahumma amin. 🤲🏻

BarakAllahu feeki sis!!! I’m so glad I came across your video and it’s SPOT ON!!!! For the past few months I’ve been reading a lot about Narcs and the hardcore perverted/manipulative ones since this year i met two of them one after the other( imagine the trauma I’ve been through but Alhamdulilah I detected the signs early on and rannnnnn for my lifeee as hard as it was bc I was finding them excuses since they are ‘practicing’ SubhanAllah). The perfect religious image got me big time and I just couldn’t grasp the fact that men in this ummah could use Allah’s words and peach about our deen and be this EVIL and toxic at the same time!!!). It baffles me that sheikhs and imaams don’t talk about this, US sisters are not safe at the hands of those monsters!! This is so sooo informative and I feel all sisters who are in the phase of talking to brothers before marriage, need to watch this!! Sisters look for signs and red flags, analyse their characters, observe and do not disclose too many info about your personal lives, do background research, stalk their socials ( they give off a lot of red flags- talking to multiple other women at the same time in their private messages, they need different preys! They also show a perfect image on their socials you’d definitely think they are the dream men! They are also intelligent and they know how to use their intellect and words to manipulate and gaslight). Ive know 2 narcs and the first was very much under the spotlight since he was a famous person, he loved the praises from his audience, always with a ton of selfies of himself, self centered and perverted in his mind( Narcs objectify women and they want to possess you, they think they’re the absolute BEST in intimacy etc). And this one had ANGER, would insult me, curse me but I’d just brush it off each time bc I thought that was appreciation until he got sick of me being clingy mind you I’m an empath( perfect prey!!) and eventually blocked me everywhere when I confronted him and told him he’s a psychopath and needs help!!!( they usually ghost you when you find out about the REAL them/ the evil psychopath that hides behind the ‘kind/ generous gentlemen’ mask) Second narc I came across was slightly different in the sense that he was more low key on his socials, you would never find out about his personal stuff but still similar to the first one when it came to using his intellect and wisdom to show the ‘perfect picture’ of a kind and humble man. This one I guess was the hardcore perv I’ve ever met, would tell me stuff like he’d hurt me, force me to do things , rape me and laugh it off like it was some kind of jokes( I became weary ofc after those episodes).. in the beginning he would call every single timeeee and I thought he was actually investing in me so didn’t see the red flag but that is actually them being impatient to ‘possess’ you! He would cut me off when I talked and insult me in subtle ways or make me feel small and I was again the perfect prey to him since I would be submissive and not fight him when he was being disrespectful. Anyways long story short while we were talking I also found out that he was talking to other women on his Instagram and it seemed like he was actually harassing them for replies, he commented on their pics saying their gorgeous etc and when I confronted him he said it’s no big deal it’s not like he’s in a relationship with them! Lol I lost my sanity at some point, thought I was crazy! He even said if he’s to get married he will still go around complimenting or flirting with women outside( like hello are you sure you’re a man who claims to pray 5 times a day??? Do you even fear GOD??). I forgot to add , one major sign that can give it off is their traumatic /horrible childhood!!! They both had abusive fathers who beat them up and lived in extreme poverty( When I came to the realization that they were perverted NArcs I asked about their childhood bc at this point I had already read about it and wanted to connect the dots so I could walk out). But it’s hard when you’re an empath bc you want to save the world and you just feel bad for them so you still try to help! But the best thing to do is Runnnnnn, Narcs don’t EVER CHANGE!! You cannot save them!! They also always have those perverted or unreal look( cold stares or psycho subtle smiles in their pictures) and most of them are loners, have zero friends( in case they have it’s usually 1/2 friends they can benefit from). Sorry Nafisa, that was super long but I just wanted to share my side of the story so someone could benefit from it in cha Allah. I’m heartbroken and scarred from those experiences, I don’t think I would be able to trust any men anytime soon.( at this point I feel like 80% of the worlds population are narcs🤔). No one should have to be in contact with NARCS, it’s living hell!! They’re demons! SubhanAllah May Allah ta’ala protect us all from those toxic and dangerous people Ameen 🤲🏽

I definitely agree with you on all these points since I have seen men like this around me. The thing is some men may be born like this, but many Muslim men develop these traits because of the way they are raised by their parents. It's so unfortunate that parents make it a complex issue where their sons can sit down and control their sisters and even mothers, yet the mother still doesn't change her way of raising her son. Then they grow up with these narcissistic traits and if things go wrong it is their wife's fault. But for real we as a society need to raise our sons right so all these issues won't arise in the first place.

The heartbreaking part is that, no matter how much logic you lay out, no matter how softly you speak about how he makes you feel, he will most likely not even understand that what he's doing is gaslighting, manipulating and hurting you. He will always feel like the victim. He will probably feel like YOU are the narcissistic one. Your feelings are never valued over his own. You will always be the one who started it first. "I became this way because back when we got married you disrespected/disobeyed me." And things like "you deserve to be treated this way" are some of the things you might hear at every argument. Name calling, yelling over you, not letting you finish your thoughts, making you in return say hurtful things even though this is not how you ever wanted to have disagreements with your spouse, all because you feel unheard, unloved, un respected and overlooked. By the end of the argument you'll end up doubting yourself because yes, you did say something mean once or twice because you truly were triggered by all of his accusations and horrible name calling. You start to think you were at fault, that you truly probably drove him that far, because he storms out of the house with some belongings, says everything that's wrong in the marriage is because of you and then gives you the silent treatment. Everything he has said and done are forgotten by him and only your reaction is recorded. You start feeling like a bad wife, start forgetting what he has done and said up to this point, for years, that have made you lose love for him little by little. Am I at fault you wonder. It makes you want to reach out to him to show him he's still respected. Maybe if you are exactly how he wants you to be, the opposite of everything he accused you of, he will be happy with you and your marriage will be free of pain. You will give and give and give some more, but the abuse will never stop. He will always find something to be dissatisfied about, to put you down and make you feel like you're the reason for ruining his life. When all along, all you wanted was a sweet husband who loves you, who you love, respectful towards each other even in argument (especially in argument), who communicates and talks things through, who can be your rock and you his, who will help each other in your Deen. But you'll find that with the years, he has broken you. You are not that sweet naive girl from the beginning anymore. Too much has happened and too little of you has been respected. You feel guilty when he accuses you because, you know deep down, you are disappointed in him and your life with him, so you assume he's picking up on that. But because he's so selfish and puts his own emotional needs before yours, he doesn't recognize his fault in that. In his eyes, you are everything that is wrong in his life. You're the reason that he feels like less of a man because you've been battered (emotionally or physically) to the point where, the desire to praise him, or agree with him when he's wrong, has vanished. The narcissist in him can't put himself in your shoes so he blames you for everything. In the meantime, you are killing yourself jumping back and forth from your own shoes to his, feeling guilt ( because you think he must be really hurting if he's acting this way towards you), anger, sadness and emptiness all at the same time and feeling empathetic to his pain while trying to deal with your own.

Wouldn't this be amazing to be talked during a khutba? We women know what narcissism is and so many of us have put up with it/are continuing to out up with narcissists, whatever their reasons may be, but I believe it's far more important that men among themselves raise this topic and help each other. Talk about it openly to better their Muslim characteristics. I believe that narcissists have been moulded through their own childhoods and through seeing their own fathers with their mothers. So I feel, more importantly that women understand what narcissist characteristics are, men need to be educated on this matter openly and through religious institutions to better marriages and family life.

I have seen the development of such a relationship and the hurt to the wife over and over while she would try to take the blame. She even said that Muslims are not supposed to be happy in this worldly life! More indignities are still coming to this young Muslimah and some of the husband's warped Islamic "knowledge" is piling on. Even though she has discovered the narcissism and the concept of 'gaslighting' she feels that her love will suffice. I will send this video to her as I have done with others. Allahu akbar. This is such an important topic to talk about. I'm not Muslim but I was in a relationship with a highly narcissistic man who showed many of these traits, and at the time I was not aware of warning signs to look for. Things that you say here that would apply more to a Muslim man (threatening to take another wife) were just a bit different for him (threatening to cheat on me because I wasn't good enough for him- his words). Fortunately I was able to leave, but I only did so after becoming more aware of what a narcissist is and how they behave.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Could you perhaps also have a video on the vulnerable narcissist? I find that harder to identify, especially in the context of Islam. The psychological suffering from their "silent treatment" is so difficult to deal with, as is the feeling of constant guilt that are insinuated. It is a more subtle form of narcissism, but no less destructive because it sometimes takes years to figure it out. As a highly empathic person, one easily get caught up in the vulnerable narcissist's 'suffering'. Sometimes this is cloaked in the romantic notion that there is nobody in the world besides the two of us. It seems like closeness, but in fact, it isolates.

I won’t go in depth but nearly everything she said I experienced and most women who are in this type of relationship (Muslim or not) have already been praying for things to change or just to get out of it. SubhanaAllah I truly needed to hear this reminder I'm too valuable to men, I have no father in my life to support me in a marriage. My life as a muslim are even before coming into the fold of Islam. No mother to go too no one except Allah subhana wa ta ala in spirit. I'm too afraid to enter into another marriage. May Allah continue to help me heal from the abusive marriage I was in and protect other sisters from such abuse.

Alhamdulillah. I ended a 3 year long courtship with the help of Allah. He made me realize that I deserve better. My dear sisters, this is my experience. I am a convert/revert. My family isn't Muslim (so they basically don't have the same standard as we do). When I was in my teens, Astagfirullah, I lived a very haram lifestyle. I was an open book to him and I never hid my past. He accepted me. Overtime, whenever we have arguments, he would remind me of the things I did in the past. He would call me disgusting, a who** who ****ed men. He would even insult my mother who was innocent. He would insult my family. He would say racist remarks, how my ethnicity is literally below his (I'm Filipino, he's Arab). I don't know how I did it but for 3 YEARS YA'ALLAH. 3 YEARS I put up with this. For 3 years I hid this to my mother because I I don't want her to think badly of Arabs (Arabs have a bad reputation in my country). It was only when his mother and I had an argument about our nikkah plans that I really realized this ain't it. He never defended me, he even blamed me even when I had nothing but respect to his mother. I deserve better. We deserve better sisters. Allah swt love us deeply. Don't let a man like that just disrespect you and strip you off of our rights and confidence.

I'm so sorry to hear that, and you absolutely deserve better. An important advice, in Islam it is better and advised to keep all your sins that you repent from a secret, no one has the right to know that you did anything bad as long as you promised Allah that you will do your best to keep away from that sin, it is a secret between you and God, and Allah protected that secret from people so keep the secret from your side and may Allah remove our sins in sha' Allah.

@@shifaaomar8591 jazak'Allah khair ☺ I edited my comment. My intention was to appeal to revert sisters that wasn't brought up Muslim. Because of this guy, I hated myself and looked at myself as a dirty woman Astagfirullah. I don't want other sisters to feel that way especially when it's something you really regret doing and asked forgiveness for. Thank you for correcting me sister. Insha'Allah if I am meant to have a husband it will happen. If there's anything I have learned in this it's patience.

It seems like we lived the same experience🥴 I’m also a revert and suffered immensely at the hands of a narcissist in a horrible “courtship” for three years like you. Luckily he only had the opportunity to physically hurt me a couple of times, but I would likely be dead if we had married. He would constantly verbally abuse me about my past before becoming Muslim as well. I also hid it from my mother for a long time because I didn’t want her to think badly of Muslims, as she already had a poor opinion. And that’s just the very tip of the iceberg (your comment probably is too). Alhamdulillah now I’m married to an absolute sweetheart and have been for two years. I am so thankful that Allāh protected me from marrying a narcissist, even though he had hundreds of people to vouch for his piety and "beautiful" public character. This is a very important talk, much needed and overdue. Thank you for touching and exposing a taboo topic. I think it's important to highlight both men and women share a wide spectrum of negative characteristics. That get camouflaged with loos, status, job role etc. I think a series on such characteristics, real life examples and solutions would be very helpful. Often negative characteristics get blurred with Islam. Where does empathic Islam start and naraccisum end? Often one finds out a person's true colours when the horse has bolted. Thank You and considering doing a series. Impartial, academic, astute, easy to listen to and relatable, sharp to the point. JazakAllah.

Jazakillahu Khair sister for shedding floodlights on this sinister problem. As a Muslim man, it's so important for us men to recognize this issue and rectify it through checking and re-checking our inflated egos. Unfortunately it is all to common to be raised by fathers like this wihich only furthers the issues through generational trauma. We inherit these traits sometimes knowingly or unknowingly and it really takes a toll on the people closest to us. Narcissitic men can initiate a vicious cycle of abuse to not only their wives, but also their children. These children grow up without learning what it means to be healthy individuals and end up repeating the same behavioural patterns...the following generation then inherits these issues and only worsens. This is why it's EXTREMELY important for all Muslim men to have taqwa. Be concious of Allah! Yes, you have been given a responsibility over women, but don't abuse it! Do you think Allah doesn't see your sick hearts and the pain you inflict on his creation?! You will be held accountable and your womenfolk and children will testify against you on that inevitable Day. You can fool the whole community and everyone around you, but you cannot deceive Allah swa.

These men are usually the ones who appear extremely 'pious' and charitable in society......literally what do they pray for 5 times and turn to God for when they're so deliberately cruel with a conscience that's non existent. Really sad how many of us are dealing with this thanks to the 'enablers' in the form of friends relatives etc who never call out on their bad behavior. Sister, thanks for bringing this up.

This is such an eye opener, thanks so much for this, may Almighty Allah continue to increase you in beneficial knowledge. But, a wife too could be Narcissistic. I walked out of a Narcissistic marriage about seven months ago, it was such a traumatic experience for me, after spending over four years with him. Though, I do love him but I love myself enough to get out of the marriage cause he was becoming a monster. I had to cut all ties of communications with him, didn't want to give him the room to manipulate and crush my heart again. I hope to find someone better someday.

My ex husband was on the surface a learned daiee. He persuaded me to marry him for the sake of Allah and told me parental consent was not required as I was divorced. He didn't allow me to know him better as it was haram. Within 6 weeks all went to hell. His mask dropped. He had 2 other wives and refused to render me any financial support. I had to be the breadwinner while he was traipsing around on holidays with the other wives. Whenever i objected to the arrangement the standard hadith Quranic and me being a bad materialistic Muslim argument. Everything else, the gaslighting, abuse etc, exactly how the video describes. Spot on even though it sounds too horrible to be true. I finally stopped giving him his narcissistic supply and he thankfully divorced me with ease. It was 8 years of hell and I had to go for therapy after for PTSD and emotional burnout.
