Imagine being a well respected NASCAR organization, 4 decades in the running. Richard Childress Racing carried this mentality, especially with its family first and consistent showings. They also had the mayor Jeff Burton, coupled with Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer as figures to win races and win championships. In terms of 2009, however, that mentality diminished. All 4 of its entries struggled for speed, and fell further down the speed charts. Today, we take an inside look at the 36 race disastrous 2009 for RCR.

The story was that RCR was building cars that were basically antiquated and too heavy than what other teams were building and didn’t realize it until the summer, coincidentally they started showing much better results at Indianapolis and Harvick almost won at Atlanta.

GatoradeCupSeriesX94 I’m gonna be honest, Richard Childress is an idiotic team owner, dumping Hemric and keeping his grandson in the 3. If anything, Ty Dillon deserves the 3, not Austin. Ideal lineup for them would be Ty Dillon in the 3, Daniel Hemric in the 8, and Tyler Reddick in the 31. I’m not saying it would put the dumpster fire out, but I would be water on the flames

2009 was just simply a wired year. We had Petty merging with Everham, the wicked witch merging with Ganssi that was supposed to be a 4 car team became 2 because of sponsorship. In points while Hendrick was 1,2,3 in points, but the 4th car driven by Dale Jr had an awful year finishing 25th. Roush had a down year after winning nearly half the races in 2008, and RCR being terrible too. However replacing them at the top was a resurgent Mark Martin, Montoya pulling a chase year out of his ass, Brian Vickers pulling Red Bull Racing in the playoffs, and Brad Kesewiski winning in a part time 09 car. And I saved the worst for last but this started the attendance and TV ratings downturn as the recession took a huge hit to nascar, and is only now flatlining.

It was more than the recession that caused NASCAR to take a hit. A lot of old school fans were upset that Jeff Gordon was screwed out of the championship in 2007 since he had a far better season than Jimmie Johnson that year, and people hated the CoT.

I like how Casey Mears was actually doing decent before the crew chief swap. He was starting to gel pretty well with Todd Berrier. He was 2nd of the 4 RCR cars, but after the swap, Mears quickly fell to the worst of all the RCR cars at the end of the season. I don't know what tells me that Dick Childress had no interest of developing Casey Mears.

I think I figured something out; it ain’t Childress, it’s his drivers, or driver. AD doesn’t deserve a Cup ride if those are his stats. Reddick in 4 starts already looks better than the 3. And I’m also gonna guess that Dillion has the better equipment.

I see it this way. A big team can be great. More drivers, more cars and potentially netting of more money. But if all of your teams have a bad year at the same time it can spell doom. I think that's what happened to RCR. 2009 was the start. They could have downsized one team to part time and gotten rid of another but childress tried to keep a four car stable and didn't have transcendent talent in at least two of the rides. The decline is definitely the reason harvick left. That just sped up the decline. We can only hope Reddick can be successful in the 8. Maybe in a year or two they can bring a 31 in part time with Hemric or a combination of RCR Xfinity driver's trying out. With Jack Daniels returning though, I think RCR may jump the gun and try moving to a three car team with a full time 07 and a part time 31. I also don't think that Austin Dillon is a bad driver. He's not transcendent, that's for sure. But I think it's more of a decent driver with mediocre at best equipment. They just don't have the funding with a lack of results. Reddick is a great driver and I feel he's a last shot for RCR. If he doesn't pan out I can't see RCR being around in 2028. Also, I remember seeing a video where someone suggested RCR buying RPM. While it is an interesting proposal, I'm not sure it would help much. And I don't think the 43 should race without a Petty affiliation. Think what you want about the 3 and Austin Dillon, at least that was Richard Childress' number and it's his grandson racing it. I don't know how I'd feel if the 43 raced without a Petty affiliation.

I always thought Casey would have made the playoffs in 2007 if his beginning wasn't that rough. He went from being in danger of not being in the top 35 at Talladega (thanks Jimmie) to being thatclose after 26 races. I think Hendrick then gave him really inferior equipment in 2008 and kicked his ass out the door. Mears never had any luck, only flashes of brilliance.
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 4 жыл бұрын
Bad Booking they, like RCR in this video, had a major problem with the cars on the 25 team that didn’t get identified until Texas, they were great after that but it was already set in motion for Dale Jr to get the ride. The only reason Mears stayed at Hendrick in 2008 is that Jimmie Johnson (a close friend of Mears) wanted him as a teammate over Kyle Busch

Andrew Moore 2 12 22 the Mears Gang is a well known racing family throughout different forms of mostly open wheel racing. Bill Mears, Rick Mears, Roger Mears, Casey Mears, they’ve developed quite a fan base over the years, especially in Southern California. Unfortunately Casey kind of had a wild ride; he came to NASCAR because he could get sponsorship while he couldn’t in indycar, even though he’d never driven a stock car, within 2.5 years of having never driven a stock car he won the Brickyard 400 pole for chip ganassi, a remarkable transition, but he could never replicate the reps of someone who had spent their whole life in stock cars and as such his nascar potential was limited. He wasn’t bad though, raced in Cup for almost 15 years, a Busch win and a Cup win, more than a lot of guys can say, especially guys who never drove a stock car until their 20s. He’s also a likeable guy, unless you’re Marcos Ambrose, but I gave Casey credit for going on FS1 the next day with a shiner

@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 4 жыл бұрын
RCR has never been the best team in the garage, even while winning championships with Earnhardt and being Chevy’s #1 team, they still never had the best equipment. Ford was always faster than Chevy on raw speed. But at least they had good people then, the most underrated part of Earnhardt being with the team was identifying good people to hire. Even as Chevy got better with the rise of Hendrick, RCR struggled to keep up, and then after Earnhardt died they pretty much permanently fell below Hendrick on the Chevy totem pole. Combine that with the decline in quality of personnel without Earnhardt, and you get the RCR of the mid-to-late 2000s, which Harvick should absolutely have left when his contract was up after 2008. Tony Stewart was offering him a ride at Haas, which was basically in the mirror position of RCR, with Stewart now giving them the ability to hire the right people. Harvick instead wasted 3 more years working with not as talented people at RCR.
