With many newcomers stepping into the network-attached storage arena, aiming to compete with established giants like Synology and QNAP, UGREEN’s entry is one of the most confident I’ve seen to date. UGREEN, a brand that has existed for quite some time in the computer accessories arena, seems to have a head start over other brands trying to enter the private consumer cloud and entry-level business market. The NASync series, also known as the DXP series, features an unusually large number of SKUs at launch, offering seven different configurations of storage capacity, internal hardware, and external connectivity. In a somewhat unconventional move, the brand has opted to use the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to launch its new product range. Although crowdfunding for NAS solutions was once rare, by 2024, several mid to high-profile crowdfunded NAS solutions have emerged with varying degrees of success. Predominantly East Asian-based brands often utilize Kickstarter to introduce their products to a Western audience, and UGREEN is doubling down on this strategy. Today, we’re examining the DXP4800 Plus, a 4-bay prosumer solution aiming to change expectations for server value. It boasts high-demand features like a powerful Intel CPU, DDR5 memory, Gen SSD storage, 10GbE, and flexible OS usage. There’s a lot to like here, but is this brand’s first foray into NAS storage worth your investment? And should Synology and QNAP be concerned?

*Update on the use of 3rd Party OS' on UGREEN NAS with hardware, with regard to warranty*: "The Ugreen team confirms that whatever is promised in their warranty policy will not change, which only covers the hardware. They also mention that there is a risk of damage if you install a third-party OS, including data loss and compatibility issues, etc." - Ugreen Representative, 26/3/24

True. But from the Q&A video they did with this channel, they really don't want to go down the rabbit hole of supporting every OS configuration imaginable so they went with a spin of Debian they forked in house as the one they officially support. It remains to be seen whether or not they have installed any anti-customer BS like efuses that would impact any potential RMAs should you swap the boot drive with something else. One question to be asked is will they offer the OS install on these machines on their site as an ISO or better yet a Github instance?

Commenting before watching: I'm really excited to see Ugreen break in to this space and see what they can bring to the table! I've been enjoying their designs in the charger and adapter sector. While I don't yet see them as a name that's synonymous with guaranteed quality and the highest standards, they do seem to be pushing competition in value delivered. I think that's very exciting for us laymen!

Tbh man, as my (way too long) conclusion says, the system doesn't feel finished right now and therefore I cannot make a recommendation based on this ore release prototype (no one should!!!). But I would say that they (UGREEM) DOES seem legit about this. I saw 4 (technically 5) software updates on the month I had this device and it got better and more optimized with each update..but it still ain't 'there' yet. If I was in your shoes, I'd probably back this. But I would maybe hold off till a few more reviews arrive. I've been chatting to a few other KZfaqrs and we all have the same thoughts (give or take). Good hardware, but the software needs more work (shout out to the @thetechnotice and @wundertechtutorials reviews that I believe are on the way v soon, and another bigger that I'm not allowed to mention the week after). Bottom line man, I'm getting good vibes from this product.. but it still needs more time in the oven!

@mariuszfuchs2010 Synology has AMD CPU. Only the old ones have Intel which is too old now. I would buy the ds923+ any day over anything if it only had a Intel processor. Hardware acceleration plex isn't best. Been looking at a Synology for months and was hoping they bring out a new one with a new generation Intel. @@condon4355 Thanks for for firming that the da923+ isn't good at transcoding. Even tho I know it isn't I still was doubting to get one. ALOT to unpavkere here. Ok, so 1, if you CAN DiY it (skillset, time, availability), go for it. It's more rewarding and also allows greater gains + savings. But the UGREEN (if they nail it) has the potential to be the best alternative out there to this for the price. The software (and indeed the system) isn't aimed for retail till well into the summer... So UGOS and the system optimization might be a different ballgame come July/August. Cannot tell. Also, re: 3rd party OS support in conjunction with h/w warranty, I'd comfortably bet that they will change their stance on this when the crowdfunding starts and the comments section rolls in!

Waited so long for you review! Huge fan of yours since I am new to this whole NAS topic and your videos are really helpful! Is it in general possible to use this NAS (or any other) for hoarding data, especially videos etc and use a Mini PC as the Plex server that accesses the videos from the NAS? My use case would be mostly for storing digital documents, photos and videos. Since they currently don’t seem to have a Plex app, I wonder if above solution would be possible. I am currently cheering for this device due to the comparably great hardware/€… Would rather use synology but cannot believe what kind of hardware they are selling compared to others

@BoraHorzaGobuchul
@BoraHorzaGobuchul 3 ай бұрын
Any network-attached storage can be used to stream video, including 4k, to media devices. Now whether it works depends on the chosen method (which is the video format - disk image, or a rip), the network setup you have (particularly at higher resolutions/bitrates), the method of playback - playback by media device such as Nvidia shield/Android tv box/apple tv from a file stored on the network, or playback by media server running on the nas device, and for the latter - direct play from network device which requires better network or transcoding which requires more CPU performance and works best when there's a GPU/a CPU that supports stuff like quicksync. E.g. I use Nvidia shield for playback on my tv, files are stored on my Synology Nas and some on my PC, 1gbe Ethernet connecting devices, alternatively there's wifi as backup and it also works well. Not watching bd images/remuxes but watching bd rips up to about 50 gigs in size without issues via Kodi. Conversely, jellyfin didn't work out for me because the older Synology I have is too weak cpu-wise to transcode the files without uncomfortable delays.

The transfer speeds that you showed over 10gbe was slow and again sorry for my incompetence when asking this but, thats transfer stuff over the network so wireless right? I have a mac studio that has a 10gb ethernet port could I plug the ethernet cable directly from my mac to the NAS and receive much fast speeds?

If you want to just have extra storage attached to a desktop pc or Mac, you could consider a DAS. Google QNAP DAS units. They generally connect via USB 3 at 10gb speeds. DAS generally cheaper than NAS. I'm not saying the NAS won't connect to the Mac though, it's just that being cost conscious, and enjoying mocking Mac users, I am not familiar with Mac

You can use a Peer to Peer Connection. But you dont will get a faster Speed with this nas as is Shown in the Video. SATA is Limited to 6GB/s. Magnetical HDD are even slower. So you Need all SATA SSDs or if you Need the Full 10gb, Switch to the nvme Modell.

Which way does the air travel through the system? Is it from rear to front or vice versa? The reason I ask is I suspect that I would assume that the air is coming in from the font and is blown out the back at which point the filter in the back is of no use.

Great Review. The idle power consumption of about 55w with 4 drives is a bummer. Other 4-Bay NAS with 4 Drivers consumes about 30w in Idle. Thats about 25w more on Ugreen, which sums up to 220kwh per year (~75€ in Germany). I could not find any snapshot capability ether, which is a key feature for a nas. At the end of the day the hardware and price really shines, but theres not much you can do with it with Ugreen OS.

The thing is, I don't mind beta products for many uses, but my storage systems need to be solid. My current 3-drive NAS has been running for over 10 years. I can't see trusting an incomplete, crowdfunded solution. And, face it, the main reason for crowd funding is when the company doesn't have the resources to complete the device without getting money up front. My conclusion is that either Ugreen really doesn't have many resources or they are using crowd funding as a method of marketing.

Hi Rafael (10/10 NAME BTW... RIDICULOUSLY JEALOUS). Sorry I am replying here, I saw your email but I couldn;t reply as I am traveling and my email server is restricting me. I was in the office earlier (before running away to a support job for a colleague) and measured up the system and shipping container for you (the shiny retail box is like 2mm less in each dimension than the shipping container!) Retail Box: 37.5cm x 26cm x 27cm System: 25cm x 17.8cm x 17.8cm Regarding weight, that was a bit of a problem. I am currently letting a couple of U.S based KZfaqrs access the system for their own reviews of the software and when I got to the office, it was painfully obvious that they were in the middle of recording something (stock or actual review content - the ultrastar 10TBs were buzzing away and the network was ABLAZE!), so I couldn't move the system to some wall scales in another room. I would say though that the system and PSU itself is approx 3-4KG (5K with the drives) and retail kit probably brings it to around the 8-9KG mark. Apologies for the vague numbers. The retail package DOES state the product dimensions...something I discovered AFTER measuring it manually (LIVID!!!), but zero mention on the retail kit or container about the weight and ti was shipped alongside the DXP480T unit and some packaging materials, so the DHL shipping label would be vastly inaccurate! Hope this helps man and I do hope you enjoyed the video and article.

Companies shouldn't keep trying to reinvent systems. Would have been relased quicker and less expensive without their custom software. I would be happy with Ubuntu server with ZFS. But would be overkill, so I should stick to repurposing old hardware I suppose. I worry about the Drobo situation if they kill this project. Wouldn't be great running out of date NAS software. That, also coupled with a strange KickStarter-only nice price, looks like another blatant cashgrab, like several other KickStarter projects. This is definitely not befitting a company with more than 10yrs presence on the market - it creates a bad precedence for their future product lines and it is a valid reason for many people to stay away .

I like Synology software - with a bit of luck this UGREEN NAS will finally force Synology to put some decent hardware in their next "plus" generation - much better CPU, integrated GPU, 10GbE, more RAM - and also move away from their lock-in on RAM modules and HDD on their higher end gear. If not, as the software evolves, I might just have to make the move.

Just a heads up (and q bit arrogant to share my own 'gear', I know) But the software beta review is now live - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8d8g89llrKmqaM.html I am only sharing here with your comment as your raised Q's about UGOS. Have a great weekend!

Your 10gbe tests should be with a single 6+GB file, not 18 files making up 4GB. The AJA test was with 512mb. You should increase that to 10GB. 10gbe will complete 512mb before it gets started.

The software looks a lot like DSM. We cant tell from this video (for sure, the deep dive will show more) but the visuals of the interface looks like DSM, so much in fact ... maybe a bit copy/paste.

Might be a wait. Main issue with ALL NAS is the proprietary nature of their drive sleds. Buy a couple if one is going to keep the NAS for the long run.

@@brodriguez11000Fair enough. The early adopters, who will encounter the teething phase of the software are getting a 40% for their troubles. That disconnect may be a offer that cannot be ignored for some. I'm thinking of backing the campaign and giving the OEM software a try. If it hasn't matured from the current state by the time I get my NAS, I'll switch to a different NAS OS (like unRAID).

@@brodriguez11000my QNAP NAS has been running 24/7 since 2008 and I had to remove only one drive once in all that time. And even then pulling out the drive and directly putting it back in its slot solved the issue. So, I don't expect much strain on the drive carriers.

@@brodriguez11000 Drive sleds don’t wear out. Had a Synology running for 8 years. Suffered 1 drive failure. The sleds have basically been touched for 10 minutes total.

The ability to us TrueNAS or another opensource NAS OS is a deal breaker for me. I do like the hardware but the OS is just missing too much to day to day operation.
