This episode, we discuss the history of video games. We'll look at the first video games invented, share our own personal history with video games, and look at the future of video games. Of course, we also spin off into useless conversations about subjects like whether Walmart still has layaway, how many people really need a Thanksgiving turkey, and how Brian pronounces the word mature.

Hello, Folks! I feel like every episode we are one step closer to finding out that Aaron didn’t actually go to Notre Dame, but instead went to the South Harmon Institute of Technology from the movie Accepted, where the students just made up their own classes and everyone gets in. Also, hearing that Butterfinger took a class with JUST the teacher is the most predictable thing I’ve heard on the podcast. Love the show guys; keep up the great work!

In a humorous twist, Bartelby is the name of the main protagonist in the movie Accepted. And yes I truly hope they make Nate read this as a double comment feature in the next episode.

The discussion around how the word mature is pronounced connected with me on a deeply spiritual level. My mom can’t pronounce anything on the menu at a Mexican restaurant, but she has the nerve to say mature the way Boondoggle says it...like she grew up in the Monopoly guy’s mansion. Unbelievable!

Aaron, I was 100% that guy in high school. When friends would ask “Wanna play some Guitar Hero?” I would always scoff and say “Guitar Hero? PUH LEEASE! I can play this in real life!” I would even play along on my real instrument when someone was trying to play the game, and they’d say “Can you like, stop? We get it.” I was great at parties. Love the show. Thanks for everything you guys do.

My parents got my sister and me a Nintendo for Christmas of probably ‘90 with mario bros and Tetris and after making us go to be early on Christmas night, my mom stayed up till about 3am and beat Mario bros. She was up waiting on us to wake up the next morning to tell us she beat it. I’ll never forget being mad that my mom beat my game before I could. We were home-schooled in elementary and she would make us do our school work while she played Dr. Mario. To this day my mom was always my least favorite teacher because of that.

To piggyback off of what Aaron said about the dad walking away to get a gift from his kids and then returning. When I was growing up(I'm 30 now) some of the weirdest moments for me was hearing kids calling for their parents or crying in the background while playing a game. I could never wrap my brain around the idea of a parent just ignoring their kid to play a video game.

I left this comment on the last podcast, but I left it pretty late and I wasn’t sure if you’d see it. Pasting it here because I really want y’all to know how great I think you are. Guys, thank you so much for this podcast. From the bottom of my heart, I don’t know how to say thank you enough. You’ve gotten me through the loss of my grandmother and two dogs (it’s been a rough few months). Example: we just euthanized one of our dogs yesterday. Our vet is still mostly curbside due to covid. While we were in our car waiting to go inside and say goodbye to our beloved dog of 15 years, we saw the cremation guy pull up. How did we know that’s who it was? He brought in two bags of ashes (we recognized the bags because we received one exactly like it when our other dog died a few months ago), and then he brought out two trash bags that most definitely contained deceased animals. He put them in the back end of his pickup truck and just drove off. My first thought was: I didn’t think they rolled these guys up in red carpet, but I could have lived without thinking about it at all. My second thought: this will make for an excellent dark joke someday. I like to think that months of dedicated listening helped me cope with such a heartbreaking moment. So, thanks again, guys. Y’all are the best. I tell all of my friends about you in hopes of getting you some new fans, but nobody really listens to me. Maybe if I continue to badger them about how great you all are, they’ll eventually turn in just to shut me up. Here’s hoping. Update: my sister and her husband are now HUGE fans.

I think a 'Research of Surveys' episode would help Nate immensely. He gets so flabbergasted by stats and percentages of any kind. My favorite part is that he truly doesn't trust what the news or what popular media says because they can be fabricating it (which I respect) but the minute you start talking about Big Foot or Aliens he's like "hey listen, I believe all of this stuff because no one has science against it"

Speaking of lay-away and video games, in 1988/1989 my brother and I were in 3rd and 4th grade. We split a paper route in our neighborhood and each put a big ticket item on layaway and paid toward it with our paper route money each week. (I desperately needed a ten speed bike, my brother: the NES). The night he finally paid off the Nintendo at Best, he had just enough time to figure out how to set it up and connect it to our TV before my parents sent him to bed without even turning it on (school night, 3rd grader). The next day, my brother Joe raced home from school (literally, we walked to and from school each day, but thay day he ran home) only to find our mom in the living room "just trying it out." She was several levels into Mario Bros on the game system my brother had delivered hundreds of papers to earn money for, made weekly payments for over 10 weeks, and waited a whole night and eternity of a school day to finally play. To this day, this is one of those stories that comes up at every holiday family meal: "Remember the time you wouldn't let me play my Nintendo the night I bought it but then played it the next day while I was at school?!?!?" ******* Joe and I saw you (Nate) in Indy in October 2019 and LOVED the show. Missed out on tickets for April 2021 while trying to figure out our soccer schedule for that weekend. Indy loves Nate - they sold out first and fast! 😭

When you go to college sometimes you don't pick your roommates. Living in an apartment off campus with 5 other dudes, one was addicted to World of Warcraft. He would play all night and sleep all day. He was also 29 living with 20 year olds. It was so bad that he would start cooking meals IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT and go back to playing. He would then forget about them instantly and leave them on the stove or in the oven. I woke up several times to smoke alarms. Ever wonder what happens to hard boil eggs after you boil all the water out for hours? I know...and it's not cool, I can tell you that much. I wish that was my only story...it is not.

The dude also had a pretty attractive girlfriend somehow. He would forget about plans he made with her. He slept through a date they planned. I have no idea how he lived like that. Long story short - They are married. Sometimes life is unexplainable.

Hello folks! I’ve been a fan of Nate for several years, and I’ve converted all my family to fans as well. We’re going to one of your shows in October. But I only recently discovered the podcast and I kid you not, I’ve watched like 95% of the podcasts over the last two weeks while playing that golf game - 2K21. Anyway, I love the podcast and I love Barndoor and even that Weber guy is okay for a genius. Love you guys, and keep up the good work!

My freshman year of college I took an Intro to Cinema class. However, I partied so much I got a C in the class. Granted, it was the beginning of online homework and I would just always forget to do the homework before the deadline. I graduated from high school 8th in my class and got a C in into to cinema. Don't worry though, I got my life together and I'm doing UNBELIEVABLE! Love you guys!

Hello folks! I have listened and re-listened to every episode. The first and only podcast I ever listened to was the bonfire and that's where I first heard of nate and he has been my favorite comedian ever since. You need to have Dan and big Jay on. Watching them trying to be clean would be hilarious. I just picture blister looking worried the whole time. I hope this podcast goes on forever and in hind sight I love this podcast.

Hey y’all. I love the podcast and you guys are the only show I listen to religiously. My favorite part is yall name each show based on the topics but then the episode gets hijacked by Nate going off on a tangent about something unrelated like bojangles pronunciation of the word mature. And then the last 10 minutes of each episode is scrambling to wrap up the actual topic. Can’t get enough of this podcast. Great work!

When Aaron was describing his WoW experience, I couldn't help but think of Leroy Jenkins. I could just see Aaron's guild making plans; his fellow player opening a present; and then Leroy Jenkins just storming in mid present opening. I guess that's not how it happened, but it would have been so much better if it did.

My guess is that they probably looked at the average number of guitars sold over a certain period prior to Guitar Hero being released and then saw a massive uptick in sales after the game was released, then subtracted the new number by the old number and divided that by the number of Guitar Hero games sold over that timeframe to get that percentage.

I can't pick seats for shows. I'm terrible. Saw you in Dallas, Texas, in October 2019 at the Majestic Theater. Great set. My wife had just finished cancer treatments in August and got the all clear from her doctors. We're both huge fans and I wanted to surprise her with tickets to your show. I looked online and thought I picked pretty good seats. I clearly can't figure out a theater diagram. We were on the VERY back row on the first level of the theater. They set up a row of chairs behind the actual seats at the very back of the theater. We could barely see you. If we hadn't seen all your stuff online and on NETFLIX we couldn't verify it was even you. That's how small you looked from the temporary seating. The couple next to us were almost as entertaining as you. The guy was hammered. I mean he was lock yourself out of your hotel room naked drunk. She was not happy. I mean really not happy. He passed out on MY SHOULDER about 3/4 of the way through your set, and she got up and said, "he's all yours" and left. Never seen these people before. Unlike Nate, this dude was not one of the better facer forwarders in the room.

I think videogames had played the biggest part in me learning english at a young age, and after that, probably movies. It is crazy how quick and well you can learn a language in the pursuit of figuring out what the hell is going on in a videogame. With that being said if my english teacher ever said “matour” I would have left class and told my mom that warcraft is a better class.

Two things: First, how do you pronounce your name? Secondly, I would love to learn a second language playing video games, but I never play video games that I have to listen to. I only play the ones that I can play on mute because I'm usually listening to the tv or a podcast or something while I play.

@@brandiburton9314 it's sort of like saying "yebbuh" but it's hard to write because Danish is such a hard language to explain in English (and generally a hard language to learn). And I mainly learned English from playing online games, because I played online games from a very young age and I learned it bit by bit from communicating with other people! But also just reading everything in the game, and trying to figure out what to do, since only a small amount of games were translated to danish back then. And then of course I watched a ton of american movies with my parents, and that helped too :D But yeah, now a days I usually watch something, or listen to something while playing, but back then just playing the game was enough to satisfy me!
